  • Very neat idea! Could iodine tablets work just as well as bleach? I don't like the swimming pool water flavor of bleach.

    Thanks

  • @EyeCanC4Miles iodine taste is just as bad.

  • pwde na rin.. :)

  • @legomanrocket123 Great advice - except you're wrong. one of the many benefits of bleach is as a decontaminant for suspect drinking water. You add it in SMALL amounts, and you're fine. it dissipates quickly, and a quart of bleach is lways included in any "GTFO" emergency bag i make. there are many other great uses for it - read up, kid.

  • just get a $20 LifeStraw, or one of the other ceramic micro filters - no chemicals! I dont think many of them have small enough pores to filter viruses to EPA standards, but unless you are drinking sewage contaminated water (human feces contaminated) viruses should not be a problem in North America.

  • once the bottle of bleach is opened up and exposed to air, the bleach will start to degrade and will loose its punch in 1 year. so mark the bleach container with the open date and throw it away at 1 year. it will no longer be effective. i personally use for my chemical purifier media the polar pure water disinfectant which is based on iodine. if you have allergic reaction to shellfish and iodine, then do not use this at all.

  • great video

  • i can see you using bleach its not a bad idea but id add bleach to the water before and after filter and let it sit. I like the idea. By the way NCHiker dont lsiten to legomanrocket the kids like 8 at tops doesnt know what hes talking baout you keep making informative videos

  • These brita filters are made to filter water from your faucet. If anyone knows the specs on this filter let me know.

  • sad song tumbs up

  • WHICH IS BETTER?: Boiling then filtering? (assume the hot water cools enough so it doesn't warp the plastic)

    Or filtering then boiling?

  • @Masowai I THINK FILTER THEN BOIL,THEN YOUR ALL SET,INSTEAD OF BOILING THEN MESSING WITH IT.

  • @legomanrocket123

No, bleach will not kill you. Adding bleach to water is a method recommended by government health departments and in survival books. The only comment I have about the video is to make sure you let the water sit for 30 minutes after adding bleach. If it's cloudy you should add 4-5 drops of bleach per quart.

  • I live the Music! :P

  • @legomanrocket123 nope. adding a few drops will not kill you nor is it toxic. in fact the bleach and the bacteria cancels out each other. and any remanning chlorophil will not be toxic. in fact some water drinks contain bleach like substances.

  • Limited amounts of bleach won't kill you. To much of anything can kill you. A lady died out in California from drinking to much water in a contest....

  • So apart from using a measurement system that is used in only one country in the world, you just combined pre-made items.

    Very disappointing video.

  • Excellent; Thanks! Doubtful two drops of bleach in a quart of water would kill you, but great idea to boil in addition to filtration...

  • Excellent; Thanks!

  • @legomanrocket123 Idiot! Bleach is chlorine which is what is used in common household water treatment facilities. Maybe you'd prefer a lengthy stay in hospital after consuming some potentially deadly bacteria while out camping or in a must-have survival situation when you can't boil. It's clear you know little about clean water other than you think it comes in bottles from WalMart.

  • Portable distiller is better and longer enduring. or hop on down to walmart and getya some water before you go camping. LOL!

  • I've always wondered why people leave out the word "the" when explaining things step by step in text.

  • @legomanrocket123 no it wont,da.look it up thats exactly how to make the water drinkable, dont post a comment if your clueless

  • Use Calcium Hypochlorite (pool shock) and make your own bleach from that, but make sure the other ingredients are negligible. DO NOT use Sodium Hypochlorite and certainly do not use any bleach with scent. You can find instructions for the use of Calcium Hypochlorite (pool shock) on the water.epa.gov/drink/emerprep/emergencydisinfection.cfm

  • idk about bleach i think i will boil lol

  • That's soo helpful and easy! Thanks! (now i just have to find some water out in the desert:)

  • You lost me at the music..

  • How to make a HOMEMADE water filter: Buy a Brita water filter.

  • Why not run the water through the filter after it's been bleached I think Brittas remove chlorine.

  • Always like the music

  • The only question I would have about this is; concerning the BRITTA FILTER, instructions always instruct to PRIME before use or it will not filter as should. If you are storing it away and use it when needed this may not be secure against sediments. I would instruct to prime filter prior to leaving home if going on an outing. Too if you prime too far in advance and store in baggie, then you may be looking at another issue of deadly mold growth in filter contents.

  • I made it but I don't have an o ring, where do I get it

  • @legomanrocket123 Use iodine drops if you do not feel comfortable with bleach usage.

  • Use iodine drops if you do not feel comfortable with bleach usage.

  • Not really homemade, the Britta filter does all the work

  • @Annergize Yeah but it did set off all kinds of ideas in my brain:P

  • Hey brilliant one, I have a better idea! Instead of using bleach, why not use kerosene? I hear it kills ALL BACTERIA. Battery acid works well too in killing off all living things in your water too. The only problem is, like bleach it's just not healthy to swallow. But hey! at least the bacteria's gone!

  • Good idea. Thanks for sharing.

  • lint licker!

  • Love it ! What Size is that coffee creamer container . Thanks again!!!!!!!

  • This sounds and looks very useful. Not that expensive to make, either. Thanks.

  • @legomanrocket123 no wonder i got sick last week i added bleech in a gallon of water and it bought killed me i figured i did something wrong, i did not read the part about cleaning it afterwards

  • @ncbookz If it makes you feel better the same thing has happened to a friend of mine who had written instructions how to do the filtering and he used to much bleach. A drop or two before filtering is what I did. I still use this setup but prefer to boil the water after collection with the filter. In the years that I have used this I have yet to become sick(Im knocking on wood right now). Hope you have better luck in the future!

  • i thought this setup is for aquarium tanks.. lol .... im lost.

  • Nice work, thanks for sharing.

  • @legomanrocket123 You put the few drops of bleach in before you filter! Then Filter out the bleach after it has sat in the water for at least 15-30 minutes so it can kill the little buggers that cause illness. If you prefer not to use bleach then just filter the water then boil it! THe choice to use it or not is up to you! I just gave another option.

  • @NCHiker1970 Bleach can be fine just be sure it is a simple sodium chlorate bleach. You can break down the bleach after filtering by putting the water in a clear bottle and leaving it in the sun for an hour. The UV breaks down the bleach.

In the concentrations suggested in this video, there should not be a problem after filtering, but the sunlight method above eliminates the possibility altogether.

  • @NCHiker1970 I saw a lot of guys on the AT using bleach. They'd fill their bottle, + a couple drops of bleach, shake, then start drinking...no disinfecting time, lol. I guess they figure it will disinfect in their bellies.

My metro stopped using chlorine to disinfect the water. The Cl reacts with organic solids to create toxic compounds. They use bromine now. I saw quite a few parks along the AT using bromine. I wonder if there are any organic bromine compounds that are toxic...hmm.

  • Holy-Terrorist:>*=* laule

  • Take the wood in a fire that has turned to an orange color and dunk it in water, take the charcoal and grind it to a powder, use the same set up as in your video and pass water through the carcoal, then take the filtered water and boil it over the fire and you've got yourself some drinkable water without depending on filters. I haven't tried it yet but if you are really desperate and lost in the woods, and you forgot your filter, you should try it. Tell me if it works if you ever have to try it.

  • I understand what you are saying and it does work. In South American jungles I used a damaged military canteen with sand, charcoal and part of my uniform to make a water filter then boiled the water after I had filtered it. It aided in taste and also took away the color and smell the water had prior. Best thing we have going for us in a survival situation is our mind. This idea was just to show that a simple water filter can be used to better the taste and smell of the water. Not Purify it!

  • Nice improvisation of simple stuff, will keep for future reference.

  • I'm willing to purchase a filter from PUR water once a month despite the price since I take my health seriously. Is this okay ? I need a fliter that gets rid of all contamenations.

  • @CollegeLoheart I cannot think of any filter off hand that takes out ALL Contamenations from the water! This video was made to show a STEP in the purification proccess. Research and knowledge of how to purify water is the best step you can take. I cannot comment on the PUR Water Filter as I have not used one in a very long time. The only system I can think of uses Light and filters to purify water and those setups. Clear 2O is the only filter I know that takes almost everything out.

  • @NCHiker1970

    Clear 20 nice nice thanks

  • @NCHiker1970 wow, you know about Clear2O?

  • @myNEONCITY I know a lot of things! LOL There was an article in 'Science Digest "about it awhile back, after reading I did a little more research on it.

  • many thanks

  • thanks, I'll give it a try. thanks for all the advice.... ....peace

  • There is another way to help kill nasty critters in the water.

It is not a filter. You have done that already.

But it is recommended to use distilled water - Colloidal silver.

I made a travel box to take with me - every thing in one box

except a glass and water. Works on 9 volt batteries-simple..

It would come in handy when you are out and about as you.

It is helpful for many things - do some research and find out

what it can do to help you and others.

  • @EarthGameOver My friends and I went camping for 2 weeks a couple of yrs. ago. We forgot to bring water. We filtered stream water with a homemade filter(sand etc) boiled the water, then added a few drops of colloidal silver per half gallon. We survived and no one got sick. I was glad my freind had taken 2 qt. size jars of colloidal silver. The stuff is worth its weight in gold!

  • @B4realalready Glad you were thinking, You can also make your own.

Check into that cause it is now illegal to sell-buy it in Canada. Just a matter

of time before they run that thru in the states I think. I made a travel box to take with me so I can make it anywhere-uses 9 volt batteries..

Also check into 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide. Good Luck

  • @EarthGameOver I started making my own last year. Used it on my dog when she was attacked by a pitbull. Used it myself this year when I had severe strp-throat. I was over it in three days flat. Wish I had known about it earlier when antibiotics did nothing for my infection which caused my ear drum to rupture. As for food grade hydrogen peroxide(35%), I do have it. I cannot get past three drops per 8oz. of water. I use distilled water, but still get the burning sensation. Any ideas?

  • @B4realalready From what I've read-heard, take it on an empty stomach and don't eat for 2-3? hours to let it do its thing. Don't know how U do it but try diluting it more. 1-2 drops per 8 oz and drink several over the day. Not all directions work the same for all. Do what works best for you if you want to take more, you have to figure that out for yourself. Try eating a little something with each glass, I'd use fruit myself. I can drink blk coffee on an empty stomach but not aspirin?

    Good Luck

  • It looks nuts, I think I will bring the entire brita container already made and sure some drops of bleach, but the filter won't last very long, it get's slimy. You have to store it in the fridge. I've had a lot of slimy brita and culligan filters til I caught on...I was not getting ahead in the safety area.

  • I would not trust a BRITA filter to filter out any or even some of the contaminants, BRITA filters are of the lowest quality and the poorest filtration. A PUR filter would be much more effective. Most people dont know that boiling water releases (TMH) into the water and that can cause cancer, boiling water is not the best way to kill bacteria, Bleach is or any other chemical.

  • @myNEONCITY

How bout no chemical, nor bleach ? PUR does not get rid of all contaminants.

  • @CollegeLoheart I never said PUR got rid of all containments, it just does a better job than BRITA. How bout no cancer risk, now TMH?

  • @myNEONCITY

So should I purchase PUR ? And why don't the companies make a fitler that gets rid of all contamniants ?

  • @CollegeLoheart i dont know if you should purchase PUR. if you want a water filter for your home than get a clear2O, it filters more than PUR and BRITA. and I think one company has already managed to get virtually everything out of water, it is a filter by seagul(something like that) and it even removes bacteria. it hooks up to the sink. it is probably expensive(idk) but a clear2O is really the way to go for water filtration, it is even highly rated in consumer reports.

  • @myNEONCITY

    Thanks, man.

  • You're one smart cookie !

  • Not sure if I would bother with the britea filter if I still had to add chlorine. If you don't like the chlorine smell or taste let the water set overnight in an open bottle.

    cheers

  • Instead of bleach I use "Aqua Mira" which is a two part chemical system to purify my water. After combining the two parts it makes chlorine dioxide, which is the chemical used by most city water plants. Kills crypto and guardia.

You should use the chemical AFTER the filter though, otherwise the activated charcoal will remove it!

  • Great video. I don't know if this has already be mentioned in one of the other comments but, when choosing bleach, only use the Clorox brand, and make sure it is unscented. We use to treat our water whenever our ship took on water in South America or down island in the Carribbean. Use only Clorox, others usually have a variety of additional chemicals in them.

  • Great information.you have given me some great ideas

  • not bad so where in nature can i find one of these filters

  • @kevbro321 Find one of what?

  • dude this sucks

  • @trifive125 To tell you the truth its a gravity feed filter --- No sucking involved!

  • what if i had about a 50 gallons of water how much bleach would i have to put in?

  • scale made in china, FAKE!

  • Boiling your water is the best choice. Please don't use chemicals.....=)

  • 2005 Susquehanna river flooded. We were told to boil our water and NOT rely on any filtration system. I have top of the line Culligan filtration system for my well, but even the company said to boil water after the flood.

  • @looseal22 I can recall the same things being said about water purification when the Red River flooded in MN and ND in the late 90's. The best way to make sure the water is 100% clean, a filter would aid in getting rid of the tastes and debris in the water mosty. Boiling is and has been the best way to purify water for centuries upon centuries.

  • @NCHiker1970 Most people dont know that boiling water releases (TMH) into the water and that can cause cancer, boiling water is not the best way to kill bacteria and purify, Bleach is or any other chemical.

  • @looseal22 Simple reason is the kind of filter your talking about is not designed to remove bacteria and virus.

    cheers

  • in the arms of the angels may i find...a water filter?

  • I love the design. It's really smart. Just be mindful of chemicals like bleach, though they are in city water, they aren't good for us.

  • Great video with music. I saw this video from hiramcook channel.

  • Bleach??? What kind of bleach?? Washing machine bleach?? Can you be specific and more information on it please. Nice vid.

  • Comment removed

  • @youngblood238 everyone has an opinion! If you don't like it don't watch, just move on!

  • @jimbob3514 Um the lead pipes and the zinc oxide! Poisoning!

  • city water and rual water has bleach put in at the treament center so fishkeeping123 your drinking water treated with bleach and i belive bottle water has it in it allso since the water runs thro a tap

  • What a world we live in.......adding chemicals too our drinking water. In my option this is wrong.....

  • love the music. who is it?

  • @DigitalCard It is off a CD called Celtic Flutes, the artist is nknow to me at this time. The song is My Nanyo. It is a very relaxing CD!

  • Very useful video, what's the name of the song btw?

  • Thanks, the song comes from the CD Celtic Flutes and the song is My Nanyo. Glad you enjoyed!

  • Did any one other than my self get slightly depressed watching a you tube video on water filtration. Wierd.

I think it was the music. ( was that the titanic song?)

  • Camping you might need it tho. If you were lost in the woods for months and had no chance of finding clean water yourself then it might be useful.

  • @JoshKnightmare ya if you were lost in the woods for months and months youd have many gallons of bleach

  • Uhm... Last time i checked, a water filter was only 20 dollars. -.- and bottled water was 10.99 for 24 packs. Where on earth do you live my friend? I understand if you were broke but 10 dollars for a whole month is good enough. The filter will only last 3 weeks so you might as well get bottled water.

  • @JoshKnightmare It was not made for home use, it was made to take out on the trail to clean up your water supply for drinking. As for my water at home I use a large Brita Pitcher which has a three month life span. The water filters sold for out on the trail run people around 80-120 bucks! this is a big savings when you compare prices to a trail filteration system.

  • Thanks for the vid I am putting a bag together and am on a budget. this will work great until I can afford better.

  • Just remember that this does not purify the water just makes it clear and filters out most of the debis and taste. Boiling water is the safest way but there are tabs on the market that work well also. Hope you get as much use out of yours as I have mine!

  • u drink water made out of bleach?

  • I add a few drops of bleach to the water to help aid in making it pure enough to drink. Although I prefer to be a bit more safe about it and boil it instead.

  • Great advice. Thanks.

  • NCHiker, also Hiram COOK: please note this is wrote to seek clarity, not to flame or troll ! There is no mention of a minimum contact time for your chemical of choice, or the prior measuring of water temp prior to treating All so note that at a temp between 10, to 20 degrees fahrenheit, the active chemical ( sodium hypocloride !?!)

will percipitate out as cristals against the in side walls of the container leaving you atempting to sterilize with just water the next A.M. Big Al

  • Big Al I understand that you did in fact watch the video but I was wondering if you read the upper right hand corner where there is more information on this video. I state in that info that the best way to kill anything in water is boiling and also state that Chlorine is not perfect in treating water. Any waterfilter is just to take out debris and make water taste better when collected on the trail.

  • i thought bleach could kill u or is that only drinking it pure bleach

  • Maybe if you drank straight bleach, but a few drops will not hurt ya!

  • THis excellent video is very easy to follow. Thanks.

  • Thanks nothing better then DIY when money is tight or your a miser!

  • Very well done!

  • NICE!

  • This video should be the poster child for How To make an instructional video for youTube. AWESOME! Well done. Oh.....

and I like the filter too. It costs $6 @ Walmart here in NJ, the creamer was $1.99, the O-ring I had leftover from something else. A comparable Sawyer filter would cost $29.99.

Britta also sells flavor additives. FYI maybe to cover the taste of the water.

  • Thanks for the compliment! I have a few videos on how to and DIY. A friend once told me if you give a man a fish he eats for one day but if you teach him to fish....That is the whole point of most of my videos, so that people can do for themselves! Glad you enjoyed the video!

  • Hey, i think this and the alcohol stove would be the two most necessary items in a disaster situation after a sharp knife or axe.

I really wanted to add that sand can remove a considerable amount of contaminants as it was used in waste water treatment before charcoal or activated carbon.

I assume this would be useful if you were stranded and did not have access to a Brita filter

  • i dunno if this actually works but what i do is i boil the water then put it through a bottle full of charcoal (with a cloth replacing the lid to get rid of bits of charcoal)

    does this actually work?

  • yes it does, back when I did survival training in the USMC I used a method like this to purify and filter my water. I may have to do a video on that to show how I did that back then. Thanks for the memories LOL.

  • would it work without boiling the water? just using charcoal? cause i have a science project where i need to make a light weight water filter to prevent diseases in water....

also, u should make a video to show how u did it back then!

  • The filter is made to remove debris and other agents, boiling water is the Best way to kill any organism in the water that causes disease. I would not recomend not boiling. First cut top off (9-12 inches)a large soda bottle put cloth(old part of tshirt) place it in the bottom, put in charcoal add another layer of cloth and another layer of charcoal. this is your water filter! BOIL water to purify!

  • thanks, man! now i wont fail science!

  • No Probelm, the more layers of each the better the filter by the way!

  • what is the song please¿

  • It is off a CD Celtic Flutes the song is My Nannyo.

  • thanks man, really useful

  • what is the name of this tune music and reply to my channel

  • What I want stuff like this as well as the alky stoves is for disaster situations. My kid can also use it for the scoutsCollect BIG iced tea containers for gallons of water. Intructions for chlorine/iodine tabs say to put tabs in, allow to sit then SLOSH the water over the mouth piece to clean that part, let it sit, then drink it. GO to Chlorox site for more info on uses of Bleach.

Thanks NC for yet another great post!

    swaz

  • Hi,

If you are going to use pop bottles to soalr cook your water use ICED TEA bottles. They are filled HOT so the plastic used is PET(E). It is a poly carbonate, I believe. That is heat tolerant plastic. Just a thought

    swaz

  • Thats good info! Thanks for sharing that one. Makes perfect sense too! Im going to spread that word around!

  • Metal coffee filter,and steripen!

  • You missed my point. it is how to make your own gear. I too have a steripen and have used the coffee filter. love it! I just wanted to show another inexpensive way for a DIY project.

  • do you know a good home-made method to change the carbon in the brita filter?

  • cannot say that I do

  • thanks for the video........

  • there are better filters then a carbon filter?

In mexico they place 2 or 3 litre clear pop bottles on there corigated metal roofs to sterilize the water in the sun,

foil and pop bottle would work for a long time. I just put some of the smallest holesin the top neck of the popop bottle and sub merse it with the lid or tube feed.

let air leave or squeeze the bottle gently and let the water the space back up.

Dirt outside, never inside. Put a plastic bag or bottle. kill microbes.

  • I have read about what you have talked about here. I was just showing one way to help purify and filter water. There are many other ways it can be done.

  • Nice little set up NCHiker1970 great to see that you are still innovating .Were are you getting your military bags and other stuff at ,you close to a surplus store

  • Im close to a couple of surplus stores here. I have one I go to that is like the walmart of MS stores, and a smaller one that I hit every few weeks. Asheboro and in Greensboro. Can't beat the prices.

  • I am experimenting with a homemade setup like this for disaster prep, but I have a question. What is the purpose of having the o ring on the outside rather than inside, helping to create a tighter and hopefully waterproof seal? Do you ever have an issue with water leakage from that area where the pieces fit together?

  • I had been placing the O-ring on the inside in the first ones I made. The bottles changed and in order to keep the seal I placed the O-ring on the outside. Both ways have been water tight so far. Before I place the filter setup in the bottle I check for leaks with a little bit of water. Also I found that the O-ring on the outside holds the setup together better. There is less chance of it coming apart and letting unclean water into the filtered water.

  • I also place the O ring on the Brita Filter so it will fit inside the plastic funnel. For my test it gave the filter a tighter fit with no leaks. Could just be the difference in the recycled coffee whitener container I used to make this water filter.

  • I don't think I would trust this. I will carry my MSR instead. Be smart and just buy one dude!

  • Be Smart? What are you trying to say? I own a commercial water filter and have used it, the one I bought does not remove near the amount of the chemical taste left behind by using bleach or the purification tabs. Let me ask this, do you boil or treat your water or just use the filter? Next time choose your words before just putting them out there like that. Someone could take it the wrong way. Yes I felt insulted!

  • Thanks, NC, you saved me a lot of time finding these things out for myself!

  • Okay, so on average, your ball park guestimate, using two drops of clorox per quart, you use one Britta filter for every 11 qt/day x 5 days/trip x 64 trips = 3520 quarts (880 gallons). Not bad.

Sorry, only a military brat, not familiar with military issue purification tabs. What do they use in that?

  • I did not realize the amount of water we went through! Wow!!

Not sure what they are made of I have no more in the house at the time, but I only use those when I am out of bleach on the trail and thats not very often! Hate the taste. I think they are an Iodine base.

  • How much water do you think you used per trip on average? Again, just trying to get a ball park feel for when the filter will crap out on me.

Water tabs--are you refering to the chlorine or the Iodine type?

  • For two of us using the system we would average about 10 Nalgene bottles maybe 12 per day. Sometimes less depending on the temp. Most trips we took lasted on average 5 days. The tabs I used were the military issue tabs. They are cheap but I know they work.

  • How long do you allow bleach to work before filtering? How does that vary with temperature?

Have you ever come to the end of a filter's ability to remove the chlorine? If so, how many quarts of treated water do you think that took? Ball park figure if you aren't sure.
