Ah, I remember those days. It's nice to know things haven't changed. LOL For the girls asking if it's worth it to go en pointe...if it wasn't worth it, we wouldn't be doing it. Also, it becomes less painful with time, at least in my experience (except when breaking in new shoes).
You shouldn't start pointe until your bones are developed, and your feet, ankles, arches, stomach, seat & inner thigh muscles are well developed and very strong.
And OWW it seems so painful! I haven't started pointe yet and now Im kinda scared now but i also sorta cant wait lol
i use to hate it because i got jealous of the other girls in my class who can do center work while i still had to be on the barre. but now i've been on pointe 2 years and i can do center work like everyone else! yeah!
i'm 14 and going on pointe tomorrow. i only take one class a week but its for 2 hours. my dance teacher said we will start doing to classes beginning in feb. only because i do ballet, pointe, tap, modern/lyrical,hip-hop, jazz, and African. its really hard to fit it into one class.
I have been in ballet for about eight years now and am grateful to be male because those shoes seem borderling torture... like foot-binding, white-hot coal walking or... well, you get the idea.
Still, I remember a semi-professional woman tell me herself that if you want to soften your pointe shoes, just soak them in water.
And also, make sure your feet are already callused and have skin as thick as a rhino before you put them on.
I just went on pointe about two months ago. I cried when my teacher told me I could get my first pair, I was so happy! It's so amazing, painful as it is, to know that if you work at something you love, you'll be rewarded in the best way: the ability to express yourself in the most beautiful of art forms!
It really depends on the individual child. If a teacher feels that a child who is nine or ten is strong enough to start pointe and it won't be harmful to the student, then the teacher will start them en pointe.
Yes. The bones in 11-year-old feet are not yet developed and those under 12 risk fracture or damage if they go on pointe too early. And any teacher who wants their students to do well will take the time to train their students to have good technique and to develop strength in their ankles. I hate when people take it personally; when a teacher surprises a student with "It's time you went on pointe", it feels amazing.
it really depends on the induvidual. some girls i know went on at 9 some will never be ready to go en pointe. as long as their feet muscles and bones and such are developed enough.
That's very true. People younger than 12 aren't mature enough, or their bodies aren't mature enough to handle the stress. I point pointe when I was 12, and this is my fourth year of pointe.
my dance teacher went on pointe at age 8, so she didn't know at the time it would mess up her feet, but it messed up the bone developement and she has had 4 surgeries done on her feet and they are still bad!
Watching these videos just makes me want to start ballet more and more! I'm almost 23, have HUGE and wide feet, overweight. But if it's really for everyone, I should be able to do it too! I have very strong feet and i'm flexible for my size- and used to be slightly overflexible. I'd better find a dance school with beginners classes in Ballet for adults!
i'm 13 and only just gone on pointe but i've only done ballet for 2 years. it's a shame i couldn't have started ballet sooner and then i could have gone up earlier but luckly i have naturally strong ankles and high arches so it's fine! i love pointe so much!
i have grishko 2007 XXX H 5 and i can tell that this model individually is very hard.My classmate has X (i cant tell why she has a narrow box because i my feet are much narrow than hers) H 3 and her pointe shoes are like suuuuuper soft you can bend them however you want! Can anywone tell me how is this possible? (sorry if i spelled words wrong ,i dont speak english) THANKS TO ANYWONE WHO ANSWERS!
yeah when i had my 1st actual performance on my pointe shoe, during tha long rehearsals i got blisters lake waay more than just during class! ahh!! =@ yea it hurt like badly & it was juz tha beggining... :) hahah but now i dont get as many and its waay better! its all part of tha cycle! hehe =] good luck to all who are juz starting pointe! work hard & i know you'll be great!! :))
Beginner pointe students should note that breaking pointe shoes in like they showed in the video isn't a good idea, it's better to break them in gradually, because they'll be better fit to your foot. The extremes shown to break them in should really be saved for the professionals
My aunt is in her 40s, she danced en pointe when she was young, and now her feet are deformed because of it. However, whenever she talks about ballet she's so happy that I feel a slight deformity is a small price to pay for such wonderful memories.
hey im going on pointe this july and i've asked other girls how it was like and they've been telling me that i have to be really flexible to be good.the thing is im not flexible at all so should i just quit ballet if it's really useless to take pointe
I had to start on pointe when i was 14 due to the fact that my last ballet teacher never believed in pointes!! So i was so happy when i recieved my first pair. My recent ballet teacher told me i need no help in breaking in my pointes or else i could break my box very fast. Which has happened to me. I am one of those automatic breaker inners of my pointe shoes with just my feet and working them continoulsy!! Even though pointe shoes are very uncomfortable at times it is very rewarding in the end.
I've been on pointe for about 3 years, and I've never really had a problem. It's just when you get a really bad cramp in your foot or you forget to cut your toe nails that it can be really painful.
ive never EVER broken them in a door no one at our studio is told to do so it makes it so they arent natural beacuse they may not be broken in the correct spot if you just wear them for a few hours and relive and press over on them in each position it works of course you must bend them a little but i dont personally reccomend snapping them also have some one put there hand over the toe section while you push onto demi pointe and that should help
i didn't start pointe until i was 13. some people don't start later. it all depends on your technique...and your ankles and feet have to be EXTREMELY strong. if you're not absolutely ready for pointe, you could break something and never be able to walk again, let alone dance.
the front part.. in my school, we chain stitch all around the flat part of the shoe, so that it doesnt tear when we go on point :) and it doesnt make us slip either hehe
My daughter dances Scottish Highland and Teaches Choreography. Like the Irish she dances the Hornpipes and Jigs too. Most of the highland style is done hoping on the ball of the foot using the arms much more.
Much of the terminology is the same but the turns and spins are much more FUN in Ballet.
LOVE this site. She just got hired as coach for a high school dance team.
Your Videos rock.. Im not ballet Im Competitive Irish dance.. But I can totally atest to going on point. We have Set Dances that some of the teachers make us to toe work. My point work in ballet (when I was in it at the time) REALLY helped my Hornpipes and Treble Jigs.

Did he BITE a pointe shoe? XD And for all of you complaing I'm 14 and I barely started pointe this year. It's definitely worth the wait though.
ALso, I've been en pointe for six months now, and I've never gotten a blister or had my toes bleed or anything besides soreness. Is that normal? Everyone always says they get blisters, so it seems like maybe I'm doing something wrong?
At my ballet school we weren't allowed to go on point unless we were 12 and have had 3 consistent ballet classes... They are super lucky 'cause I didnt start point until age 12.
I LOHVE POINT!!! I WILL NEVVER STOP!!
Although I'de have to admit, ~Blisters SUCK!~ but its like... Whatever!! I don't caare.. If dancing on point is what I want to do.. IM DOING IT!!!
haha we use new skin lol ive never got a bad enough blister to hve to se it lol im glad but i have new point shoes to break in so ill probly end up getting one
dadadancer ask your teacher if after a class if there is time between if you could use the studio and if that doesn't work try doing your steps in place in the kitchen or any where else where there is a hard floor
I love ballet sooooo much, but not that many people do it at my school so the program isn't as hard as i wish it was and there is no room in my house to get in a good amount of practice in. Is there anyone with a suggestion? I would appreciate it tons
The kitchen is your friend. A counter can become a bar, the fridge your pas de duex partner. If you have a really slick floor, Discount Dance has special socks that'll keep you from slipping.
I used to do gymnastics but i stopped. I have been doing ballet for 7 months now and because the teacher said i have good leg strength and have great technique, i have been put up a group and have just started en pointe! So i suggest you just try it out and sees how it goes. You can do it if you really want to!
To selicutie and Ebizz78 keep going :) i gave up ballet at 10 after doing it since i was 4 started agen wen i was 14 everyone sed i was 2 old but i tried so hard and within a year was on point in intermediate class you can do it :):)
i have had my pointe shoes since i was 9 and now i have gotten better...i love pointe now at the beginning of the year i Hated it and was tired of it and we are doing Peter Pan soon and we have a fairie dance and its on pointe and since then i have learned to love pointe!! they are my best friend and my arch enemy at times!!!! HAHA!! i have terrible looking feet!!
I'm sixteen and I have always wanted to do ballet, I may be behind but its a dream to go en pointe. A lot of people say I will never do it but hey, what's life if you can't prove them wrong?
I know how you feel I'm 15 and restarting ballet now.. I know it will be hard and that the usual age for going on pointe is much earlier but i have a passion for it.
I am 15, 16 in 4 monthsw and started ballet classes 5 weeks ago since then i have totally fallen in love with it so if you haven't started yet and still want to do, because you're not too old lol! if you have do you find turning you;'re knees out far enough the hardest part? pls reply !
Actualy, Pointe shoes hurt when you don't use any padding. That's the old school way. Today you can use all kind of special pading especialy created for dancers on pointe to prevent blisters. It makes dancing so much more enjoyable and even extends the career if a dancer :-)
You should try again! Your never too old to do Ballet! I did ballet for 10 years, but I stopped a couple of years ago. I kinda missed it, but then I didn't. I'm thinking about going back. Idk...
lol Anyways, if YOU want to do it, then YOU should! Ballet is such a beautiful thing :]
I love ballet!! I used to dance when I was like 6 years old, but I stopped... And now I'm 16 and I'm too ashamed I stopped ballet... I've been dancing jazz, hip hop, tap and contemporary dance for 3 years and I've been thinking of ballet, but averyone in my family say I'm too old to begin (again)... And I don't know if it's worth to try... HELP!!
God!! I love ballet!! I used to dance when I was like 7 years old, but I stopped... And now I'm 16 and I'm too ashamed I stopped ballet... question- does pointe ever stop hurting so much? it seems like the longer i've been doing pointe the MORE it hurts... i always thought the pain would eventually go away... anyone know what i'm talking about lol???
lol! I've started pointe when I was 10 but I wasn't that good! Years pass and it all just seems like yesterday that you just got your first pointe shoes!
Hey BallerinaKayy a lot of people would say that it is too old at 16 to start pointe, but to tell you the truth nothing is too late if you have the integrity and perseverence to get to that level! Keep trying!!
To be honest, it would be very difficult for you to become professional, but not because you´ve started pointe at sixteen, simply because ballet companies nearly always have young dancers in the companies, so if you want to be a soloist, it will be complicated, you´ll have to work very hard to be better than ballerinas who started pointe at 10.
Im turniing 14 and this is my second year on point. We start point when me get to Majours ( this is in australia) so we start point in Pre elementary ( intermediat foundation) and upwards. THis video is great!!!
at my school...we couldn't go on until we were 12! That way we knew we were strong enough, and our feet were ready! Those girls are lucky they weren't seriously hurt!
wooow they went on to pointe so early ... i wish i went to a better ballet school wen i was younger they did stuff there that 7 year olds did @ my new school o well next year i might start pointe
I'm starting going en pointe this Saturday as my classes start again from the summer holidays and this really lets me know what to expect! Thank you! ^_^
you should buy pointe shoes that fit your feet, instead of taking shoes that accidentaly fit someone else's feet. I'd go to some really good ballet shop and try every pointe shoe they have untill you find a pair that really fits you. I did it too when I first got pointes and it took me about 1,5 houres;)
All those people are so lucky! They started going en Pointe when they were like nine, ten or eleven! I'm thirteen and I'm not en Pointe! I'm probably just really far behind!
Keep dancing! Don't ever stop! You regret it so much if it isn't something you really didn't want to do! I learned that the hard way!
I've picked up dancing again though and I'm never quitting!
I just want to say I totally agree with you. I'm 14 and am just starting pointe work. Luckily I'm young to go on pointe in my ballet school (they're very strict about foot development and you have to be done growing before you can start) so it's not as embarrassing, but still, these videos make me like..ugh. lol
I quit ballet when I was ten and I'm starting up again (I'm thirteen) after the summer holidays. Well, I PRAY that I'll be able to come back again! If not, I'll not know what the heck I'll be able to do! I didn't get to the stage of going en pointe.
In the UK, you don't go on for AGES! I have a friend who didn't go en pointe until she was fourteen or fifteen.
Everyone starts so early! You'll think that we start late though! ^_^
Yesterday I just went back on my pointe shoes for the first time in 6 years. I was almost crying in pain, but strangely enough - no blisters, no blood. I've never had my toes bleed before actually. I've seen girls who have had to put on that "new skin" stuff though and I can only wince for them. Despite all the aches and pains, pointe shoes have always been my love.
This is my 3rd year on pointe... the first year was pretty painful but now I only get blisters when first breaking in new shoes... I wear Bloch Sonatas and I love them
LOL Hahaha!!! I enjoyed this a lot. LOL Y7'all made me laugh and have fun. Sara made me laugh a lot harder in the end. LOL Cool!!! :D Pointe shoes rock! Hurt...but ROCK! Yeah...hurts like rock, too. LOL <3
i have glisse er sumtin like that point shoes but they hurt like hell!! i have good pads tho but the shoes r too tight i have really narrow foot!! i luv point but u have 2 handle it at 1st but after ull c the great stuff u cud do!!
Yes, at first it is a type of class; it is only at a teacher's discretion when a girl will first go en pointe and then she will attend a pointe class usually separate from her regular ballet classes or incorporated...it is a long process from the first pair of shoes to actually being able to dance well in pointe shoes... (^_^)
i kno how u feel, i was the worst in the class when i started! i couldnt get up on the toe and by a week of practicing i got it. it hurts so bad! but pointe shoes r cool!!
How many years does it take to go on pointe? Also I am 13 and i am starting beginning ballet in the fall.

I just started pointe and it doesn't hurt or give me blisters! It might be because i weigh 75 pounds at the age of 15!!! :)

They are size 39 width 2 vamp 2.
can anyone tell me their experience with pointe? and also if you have russian pointes please please tell me about them.

dadadancer ask your teacher if after a class if there is time between if you could use the studio and if that doesn't work try doing your steps in place in the kitchen or any where else where there is a hard floor
rocluzo 4 years ago
I love ballet sooooo much, but not that many people do it at my school so the program isn't as hard as i wish it was and there is no room in my house to get in a good amount of practice in. Is there anyone with a suggestion? I would appreciate it tons
dadadancer93 4 years ago
The kitchen is your friend. A counter can become a bar, the fridge your pas de duex partner. If you have a really slick floor, Discount Dance has special socks that'll keep you from slipping.
WyverxCA 4 years ago
well it depends on your age... if your younger than 11 you cant go on pointe because your feet aren't strong enough yet.

I cant wait untill I start ballet in September!!
I really want to go on pointe;does anyone know how long it takes?

Balletlove59 4 years ago
I used to do gymnastics but i stopped. I have been doing ballet for 7 months now and because the teacher said i have good leg strength and have great technique, i have been put up a group and have just started en pointe! So i suggest you just try it out and sees how it goes. You can do it if you really want to!

I know how you feel I'm 15 and restarting ballet now.. I know it will be hard and that the usual age for going on pointe is much earlier but i have a passion for it.

wait so after you get use to the pointe shoes your feet and toes dont get blisters and stuff anymore?
michellea21 4 years ago
Actualy, Pointe shoes hurt when you don't use any padding. That's the old school way. Today you can use all kind of special pading especialy created for dancers on pointe to prevent blisters. It makes dancing so much more enjoyable and even extends the career if a dancer :-)
AvalonFae 4 years ago
=0
that sounds great!!!
thanks for that. =]
michellea21 4 years ago
=S
it sounds terrible.
michellea21 4 years ago
Well without the padding it can be pretty bad..
XxSoundlessxX 4 years ago 3
not necessarily. w/ my russians, i cant wear padding or i have horrible foot pain.
sytycdfreek 4 years ago
Well for me. It rubs against my toes and it burns xD So yeah i think for me padding feels way better ^^

I'm sixteen and I just started pointe. I've been in prepointe for two years. I've been on pointe for three months altogether.

HELP!!

my shoes die almost instantly if i try to break em in like that D:
and there is no such thing as too old for pointe
as long as you have sturdy technique and are physically able :D
emx2a 4 years ago
Actually not the tips of your toes will hurt.If youre not wearing padding you will hurt the area of the beginning of the toes.

Do you think 16 is too old to start pointe if you want to be professional?
BallerinaKayy 4 years ago
Hey BallerinaKayy a lot of people would say that it is too old at 16 to start pointe, but to tell you the truth nothing is too late if you have the integrity and perseverence to get to that level! Keep trying!!
princessofballet 4 years ago
To be honest, it would be very difficult for you to become professional, but not because you´ve started pointe at sixteen, simply because ballet companies nearly always have young dancers in the companies, so if you want to be a soloist, it will be complicated, you´ll have to work very hard to be better than ballerinas who started pointe at 10.

hey i am buying new pointe shoes next month, what kinda shoes do you guys wear?
i had bloch serendes but i didn't really like them.
any tips?
Tallyzip 4 years ago
you should buy pointe shoes that fit your feet, instead of taking shoes that accidentaly fit someone else's feet. I'd go to some really good ballet shop and try every pointe shoe they have untill you find a pair that really fits you. I did it too when I first got pointes and it took me about 1,5 houres;)
wicca2908 4 years ago
All those people are so lucky! They started going en Pointe when they were like nine, ten or eleven! I'm thirteen and I'm not en Pointe! I'm probably just really far behind!
Keep dancing! Don't ever stop! You regret it so much if it isn't something you really didn't want to do! I learned that the hard way!
I've picked up dancing again though and I'm never quitting!
I want to dance the rest of my life!

Go on pointe at 37? No not too late :) Although the age is not actually preferable among instructors I am sure that you have what it takes :)
princessofballet 4 years ago

Good luck to all new en pointe-ers!

Yesterday I just went back on my pointe shoes for the first time in 6 years. I was almost crying in pain, but strangely enough - no blisters, no blood. I've never had my toes bleed before actually. I've seen girls who have had to put on that "new skin" stuff though and I can only wince for them. Despite all the aches and pains, pointe shoes have always been my love.

pointe is like a type of class or something??
C0C0ACHIP 4 years ago
Yes, at first it is a type of class; it is only at a teacher's discretion when a girl will first go en pointe and then she will attend a pointe class usually separate from her regular ballet classes or incorporated...it is a long process from the first pair of shoes to actually being able to dance well in pointe shoes... (^_^)
