software center in 10.04 sucked there was no way to know where you installed anything and going back to installed software the names were very intimidating...you had to geek your way to the app just to use it, of course it doesn't matter now for me( i eventually geek-ed my to almost everything in Linux) but for new users its frustrating and makes you appreciate Windows.
I see you don't like Ubuntu. That's ok I guess you can ask for your money back and you can install some better software like windows. Now that's a pice of software..... Who gives a rats ass what grub looks like? It's there for a few seconds and gets replaced with the Ubuntu splash. F-spot just sucks. End of story. Use gthumb. It does the job and takes up less space.
Considering a lot of Linux users seem to use Gimp which has become established as a core application for virtually all general purpose desktop distros? Removing it was stupid.
Before Plymouth and gdm 2, you use to be able to customize everything including the boot.
There is still many themes at gnome.org. Use kb3, it is free and great burning program. And the janitor....lol yeah our right. i miss the add remove. I started to use it on 7.04.
This OS comes free and there is one sick thing about it - its people who just complain all the time - word for you guys: NOBODY FORCED YOU TO INSTALL IT - IT WAS YOUR OWN CHOICE SO SHUT THE HELL UP AND STOP COMPLAINING YOU MORONS...
grub should be replaced in the next 2 versions--burg is now out. burg is a graphical grub. its still beta now, but bugs are getting squashed daily. try out burg u might like it. brasero is there for gnome sake--k3b is MUCH better. i've no problem installing commercial software, but nero is just bloated on windows(last good version was 6/7) and i cant see paying for something when k3b is sooo good. ubuntu now has bug fixes and is version 10.4.1 it is sleek and fast.
@xtcongo It is? o_O I called it Linnucks (pronounced like the I in Yin) and sometimes Lie-nucks. Never pronounced it Leenucks before. Doesn't look like a Leenucks to me.
Instead of Nero Linux, try Gnomebaker or K3B. They work great I like K3B but I prefer gnomebaker because it's gtk stable. Ubuntu Tweak for eliminating packages. Try Shotwell to replace F-spot.
thats funny, I could watch youtube videos right off of the bat when I installed it on my machine, alot of other things worked right away, it detected my Radeon 3870 Card and Audigy X-Fi sound card and installed the drivers for them, didnt have a single hitch with it which is a hell of alot more than I can say for Windows, having to install a bunch of shit after waiting forever for it to install, fuck Windows bloated crap.
LOL.... Ubuntu is great, my favorite Linux version. 10.04 is actually very amazing. You sounds like a Windows person.... Also why tell people to wait after the official release? Updates will take care of any so called bugs after it is installed.
Maybe you should just get a mac.... since it sounds almost like ubuntu is a little too much for you.
Brasero sux? Lol! I never had problems with it + 1 time I wasn't able to burn with Nero and booted into Linux just to burn it and it worked just great!
Thanks. I installed it 2 days ago and am very pleased with it. The only problem I've had is burning audio discs with brasiero. Which I think I've sorted, I just tick burn directly to disc rather than burn to image file then burn to disc.
Didn't like brasero, but lately it worked quite satisfiable for me while burning images and audio disks.
f-spot indeed is a quite crappy fotomanager. If I compare it to Irfanview it sucks in every aspect. And it misses some (for me) very basic options like cropping a picture .
I am very impressed with 10.04 so far. I'm still waiting to fully install though because for some reason it doesn't register my laptop monitor on my Gateway and it won't allow me to use special effect. I'm hoping that its a bug that will get fixed soon. On my Thinkpad T60 it runs flawless.
I tried Brasero too and found it lacking. However, I tried out K3b and found it worked well, and its free and open-source. I've seen Nero for Linux, but since K3b is for free and does a good job I can't make myself buy something like that. Also, I have a old PC with dual boot of Linux Mint and Windows 2000 Pro, and I have Nero 6 on the W2K (it came with the aftermarket burner I bought) It's good but not perfect.
man, get rid of that pointer particle system!! hehe... I don't know why people mention "they got rid of the gimp in favour of f-spot" - they are two different things, namely, gimp being an advanced image editor (like photoshop) and f-spot being a photo manager.. they have little to do with each other.
the thing I hate the most about Ubuntu is that there is a lot of setup to do when you first install it. For example, youtube doesn't work and neither does quicktime trailer movies. I have been using PCLinuxOS 2010 and everything works right out of the box. I don't need to install anything. I with Ubuntu would do this.
@gotbletu Regardless, it still is pretty lame they don't install Flash or Java by default. Flash (whether we want to admit it or not) is a necessity for 99.999% of a typical user.
@jrbusuttil Then try Linux Mint it'll do what you wants. By the way, on most OS/distribution there's no pre-installed java, flash, etc (to watch youtube videos, etc).
read the Ubuntu promise on the cover of the official cd: "Ubuntu CDs contain only free software applications." 'cos of the software patents. the flash, quicktime codec and the others are not free.
@jrbusuttil if ubuntu do that, for example Adobe could demand Canonical because Canonical would have to buy a license and with that Ubuntu couldn't be free
@jrbusuttil They are working on that. You can choose to have the necessary codecs installed during install. Makes my experience better. Besides, flash never comes ready to use on any computer.
@stmpoodle think ill wait until KDE 4.5 to try it again, mainly had alot of minor bugs since they introduce alot of new features, so it would probably be stable once 4.5 hits
@gotbletu Sup dude! For whatever reason 10.04 won't register my Gateway 7330gz's monitor plus it won't allow special effects anymore when 9.10 did. ANy clue as to why or of any work around?
Why do you want a pretty grub? Linux is the only OS which has a bootloader which supports multiple OS's. It's a utility with functionality & doesn't need a pretty design. If you install only Ubuntu then it doesn't show GRUB so newbs won't see it. - Brasero is the easiest solution!
Brasero on my PC works well with no problems Ubuntu 10.04LTS it may be a piece of shit to you, but not to others, perhaps its your PC thats a piece of shit?
@swift240 lols nice try, is that ur answer? my pc is trash? what a knob. I used 4 version of Brasero starting from 8.04LTS, on 2 machines. The fail rate is too high, burning at 4x speeds. Put nero linux on same machines, works like a champ. Why would i care about other ppls experience, this is talking about my experience.
Brasero is great IMHO, great user interface, and never had a problem with..
I agree about Fspot: i still look for something like picasa or iphoto that is FOSS.. only DigiKam comes closer, but can't stand the KDE-like UI.. let's hope that Shotwell/Solang will improve.
Gotbletu, I know what you mean about brasero, but I noticed that if you burn the cd at 8X rather than 16X it would solve your problem. That is if you are taking about the image.iso thing.
Ubuntu 10.04 it's out already ... Wow i was waiting for that ... Downloading right away ...
Anyways as for Gimp i have to say that's my favorite photo editor after Photoshop and i use it even under windows ... Gimp is fair and awesome for linux ... Brassero sucks a little bit cause of limited options but k3b instead it awesome ...

I was wondering when you would get around to installing this so I could get your commentary on it. I've run it since alpha and it's not bad to me. I do get this one boot error that bugs me now. "The disk drive for /media/sda1 is not ready. Press S to skip or M for manual recovery." I usually skip and it's ok. Would like to fix that though. Anyway gotbletu, good to see you on Lucid Lynx finally.
@JerichoKru they still make it, and you can still download new versions from the songbird web site... I looks way better than any music player in Ubuntu...
i like teh new ubuntu\. but this shutdown/restart bug is piissing me off in 10.04. that is teh reason i was always a linux mint user. linux mint fixes ubuntu bugs and releases a better ubuntu version.
bug 1) when you shutdown / restart doesnt do anything but log out of the account to the login screen.
bug 2) sound sometimes doesnt load upon bootup. something wrong with pulseaudio or ubuntu just didnt integrate it correctly
3) JAVA is now openJDK and it sucks. unless you get their parter repo.
It kinda bugs me that the window title bar doesn't have the application icon. I found putting menu:minimize, maximize, close fills in that gap sort of that is currently left when moving the buttons, but I wish I could find a fix that could bring back the application icon.
Also can you remove/replace applications from the notifications envelope thing? like replace the defaults they have with pidgin, pino, thunderbird...I couldn't really find any help on that.
I was going to hop on and look for a review today and here it is! What info do you have on the dual boot problem? And have you heard how the Xubuntu variant does on... er... shitty old hardware? Karmic seems a little poky on my old laptop.
Xinerama doesn't work for 10.04, due to an xorg regression... I have 3 monitors, so this makes Ubuntu unusable for me. Basically, back to Windows until someone fixes that xorg regression.
@Charles2337 The easiest way to to get a .deb installer for a program called Ubuntu Tweak (just Google it), then open the program and go into "Window Manager Settings".

The Janitor remove a package or something and caused me to have an error...
so I never used it again... You're right it's crap
I hope that they start including OpenShot Video editor, and SongBird I really enjoy them.
Do you know of any other programs like that for Ubuntu that are not included in the repositories ?
maw88ify 1 year ago
@maw88ify Songbird was discontinued for linux.
JerichoKru 1 year ago
@JerichoKru they still make it, and you can still download new versions from the songbird web site... I looks way better than any music player in Ubuntu...

Say you have a fold on your desktop you just right click and select 'SEND TO' I really don' like doing it that way, but it's the only way I found...

i agree with ya on everything ;-) good points

If people don't mind having a couple of qt4 libraries, I recommend k3b. Much better than Brasero.

Would you recommend this new Ubuntu over using Mint?
RonnieInOC 1 year ago
i like teh new ubuntu\. but this shutdown/restart bug is piissing me off in 10.04. that is teh reason i was always a linux mint user. linux mint fixes ubuntu bugs and releases a better ubuntu version.
bug 1) when you shutdown / restart doesnt do anything but log out of the account to the login screen.
bug 2) sound sometimes doesnt load upon bootup. something wrong with pulseaudio or ubuntu just didnt integrate it correctly

Also can you remove/replace applications from the notifications envelope thing? like replace the defaults they have with pidgin, pino, thunderbird...I couldn't really find any help on that.

fucking brasero! Never works for me
dmplace 1 year ago
Nero? What the hell man? Just use K3b!
Keruaran 1 year ago 17
@Keruaran Yep K3b is the shit, but Brasereo is not bad either. It'll work as fast as your burner will support.
eqspec76 1 year ago
@Keruaran yes K3b is good
andresql 1 year ago
@Keruaran lols yea i would use it, but it looks ugly, so i pass on it
gotbletu 1 year ago
@Keruaran what is the problem with brasero??? it is good, it does the job and I like it...
slsolaris 1 year ago
@slsolaris I didn't say anything about Brasero... gotbletu already said he didn't like Brasero and K3b rocks.
Keruaran 1 year ago
Hey. How did you make your workspaces be arranged in a square rather than in a line???
ManoKiaule 1 year ago
I was going to hop on and look for a review today and here it is! What info do you have on the dual boot problem? And have you heard how the Xubuntu variant does on... er... shitty old hardware? Karmic seems a little poky on my old laptop.
vaasnaad 1 year ago
imo brasero isnt that bad for for when it is i just install k3b.
and if your going to wait 2 weeks for ubuntu why not just wait 4 weeks for mint?

Xinerama doesn't work for 10.04, due to an xorg regression... I have 3 monitors, so this makes Ubuntu unusable for me. Basically, back to Windows until someone fixes that xorg regression.

Hey man, how did you move the window buttons to the right hand side? I really want to change it.
Charles2337 1 year ago
@Charles2337 Just install Emerald if you have compiz already. Emerald is way more flexible than Metacity(the current one).
sw2de3fr4gt 1 year ago
@Charles2337 The easiest way to to get a .deb installer for a program called Ubuntu Tweak (just Google it), then open the program and go into "Window Manager Settings".
adjohnson916 1 year ago
@Charles2337 gconftool-2 --set "/apps/metacity/general/button_layout" --type string ":minimize,maximize,close"
