Maybe you're not ready for gentoo. Ubuntu is far the best os out there and easier to install things and more forgiving like window 7. Gentoo just makes things worse especially for someone that is not really good with linux. I can program a laptop with linux in a day of work. This would include installing alot of microsoft stuff. In many dist i recommend you ubuntu. Mavrikk 10.10.
"dpkg --configure -a" what the hell is this and why does it always pop up when i try to install updates on my computer? help me with this error. i cant find out the solution anywhere....
Oh yeah... ROFL @ I'm laying there thinking "What if I try this?" Thats totally what happens!
When they say say Linux makes a fantastic contraceptive, that pretty much makes Gentoo the equivalent to a vasectomy. Feel very safe in the knowledge that you aren't knocking up ANYBODY while running Gentoo.
yeah... I don't get much sleep when I'm stressing on a problem. My mind can't stop and change the subject too easily. Just recently, I was getting XP to run in VirtualBox along with Visual Studio. I needed SP1 for Visual Studio for the WM6 SDK's to install, and the SP1 kept failing. I was up till 3am just working the details out. Then I still didn't goto bed till 5:30 because I really wanted to see a WM6 app built and work on my phone - Treo 800w. Y I have a Treo with WM6 is another story.
Problems with fglrx can hardly be blamed on gentoo. fglrx is SO unbelievably bad its incredible. Theres nothing gentoo (or any other distro for that matter) can do about it.
Are you running testing branch? If so, you can essentially expect fglrx to fail now and then. Use radeonhd or radeon if at all possible. Basic (very experimental) 3D support for r6xx-r7xx was just added this week in fact.
Sucks about the slow computer. I feel for you. Still totally worth it to run Gentoo imo.
No, I'm running a mixed version. The OS core I keep stable with whatever hardened packages are available. However, I do try a few ~x86 apps here and there if they are something I want to use. I try to stay away from experimental, but sometimes you have no choice. My system has been very stable in the last couple months, despite the more recent changes to the QT packages. I'm just waiting on KDE4 to be fully approved and moved to the supported branch now. Thanks for the comment.
Dan ive just got the Ubuntu OS on my PC and when the logon screen pops up it wont log in and ive tryed all the usernames and passwords but it wont log in !
Is there a way to reset the password and username or anything to log in to the desktop !
i started on slack and then brushed trough gentoo when it first came out and in the last couple years i have been using debian exclusively, the only real "issue" with debian is that it takes ages before they consider something stable enough to be in debian, so you will find a lot of outdated packages, but depending on your needs you will see that this tradeoff for stability may save your a** someday.
I agree. Sometimes stability outweighs the benefit of cutting edge. Debian has a strong foundation, and a lot of flavors are based on this Linux variation.
Yes, I should look at slackware again. I've been using Gentoo for so many years, and have been happy with it. However, all the compiling has gotten really time consuming.
I actually installed Freespire on my dad's laptop though, since he's a newbie to computers in general. And one of the primary reasons for having selected that distro for him was b/c of 'Click-N-Run' (CNR), which I figured would be easier for him to use than yum (even though that's pretty easy to use anyway). Now I just have to install the wifi card with the built-in ndiswrapper, which I'm working on now.
Nice video im a linux geek and I think its important to see the down sides as to the upsides to find some thing that works for you. Fedora is my favorit Linux OS. ;)
Some time back you advised me on "how to" with linux and video cameras-- well got a lot of videos uploaded now, all silly bbq videos, using suse linux and kino 1.1.1 exporting to mpeg 2 --funny I can upload files larger than 100mb using linux. I can't do that at work with windows. ..! Thanks for the help :-)
Thanks for the comment... loved the diddy at the end. I've kept my system quite stable lately... but the biggest problem I have with Gentoo, is that I don't always want to upgrade to certain versions, and then they cut out support in portage for the version I want. Other than that, I love Gentoo's ease of experimental use and cutting edge apps.
I have been interested in jumping into the Linux world, but I have the same problem you do and my Vista system gives me enough problem (all that beta software doesn't help) and keeps me up thinking... after hereing your video I'm glad that the military didn't switch to linux... although the US Marines use Linux to target with their artilery... it's very interesting... now you can say Linux helped defeat Saddam haha
I'd suggest a slow transition with a liveCD or liveDVD version of linux. Plus, I'd use a medium aged system for support purposes to try it out on. Appreciate the comments. Linux is very strong, but it is only as good as its programmers and support staff.
What I am finding out, is that there are a lot of Ilife applications that are similar for Linux, but I don't think Ilife will run on Linux except in a virtual console such as VMware, and then maybe that wouldn't work either. Thanks for the question, and I'll keep my ears open just in case.
You should try Ubuntu next time gentoo makes you spend 4 days compiling :) All that optimisation probably doesn't save you 4 days in the time between world recompiles.
Yeah!!! I've been hearing a lot of good things about Ubuntu, and may go ahead and build a Ubuntu system on a spare HD I have... Gentoo is awesome for choice and flexibility... but the compile times can be a real drag!!
There are library's written to allow syncing with an ipod in linux. Is that what you mean? There is a lot of support for the ipod that I have found inside linux.
hey, I really enjoyed this video. I'm new to Linux myself, I'm using (dont kill me) freespire 1.0.13 and Puppy Linux (I just love its speed/no need to install). anyhow, I ahve a Biostar Geforce 6100-M9 motherboard. i'm using the onboard audio and its giving me problems the chipset is the Realtek ALC655, I hear it causes a few headaches. what should I do to get it to work?
I use linux too at home I have the newest suse 10.2,
I want to make videos and put them on youtube too and so on-- I have a couple of digital video cameras and a canon powershot camera, but how to get started? bet you can give me some tips :-)
I use kino to capture my video from my camcorder through the firewire port. In the beginning I used VLC with V4L and a linux compatible webcam, but as you can see from a few of my earliest videos, the video sound and picture quality were not that good. I'd make sure you have ieee1394 support built into your kernel, and install kino-0.9.5. Then you can connect your digital video camera to your system, use kino to capture film you've taped or capture a live feed, and export to a youtube.
Your Welcome. I'm always glad to help anyone with Linux needs, I think it's great to find alternatives to Windows for those tired of paying the price of MS. Linux has so much to offer. It just takes a little digging and patience.
well got a camera to feed into the computer using a firewire, with kino. I can get it to capture a live feed and also record. how to get it from there to youtube I havent worked out yet. where do I convert the file from raw-dv to another format? I could ask my brother in law but imagine if you could tell me :-D

I use Mint and its nice. I would like to have more access to the configs but other than that I like it.

I run slackware for definite reasons:
1) configuration files are simple. ie 1 or 2 files maximum for networking.
2) the init setup is just as economical
3) default compilations are for i486 or i686, which means it has a much higher chance to run "out of the box"
4) I can easily download UNPATCHED virgin source code from anywhere and compile it and just as easily add the installed pack registry.
5)out of the box 2.6.2x kernel install

look for keywords - Alsa realtek alc655 on google linux , basicly you must enable in alsa support of your audio chip and it must work .

If you don't have the latest Kino, this may look a little different, but look for AVI-single pass FFMPEG.
