What I think Homme is saying here is that you can't let circumstances control the way you approach life. At the same time, it's not healthy nor wise to walk through life with a blind ignorance about the world. It's an easy concept to understand, but difficult to follow through on, as we natural choose to either play the game and go with flow of things, or completely make ourselves blind to reality.

I'm not certain what this song is about but, everywhere I turn, people are connecting the lyrics to either drugs or a girl. I've been trying to find a different meaning to this song and concluded that it may be about not being blind to reality and circumstances, but still not giving much attention to it.
