At the time I believe you had to run more than 7 races in a year to give up rookie status for the following year. Actually, I believe Richard Petty holds the record for the most crash related DNFS-at an astonishing 92. Jeff Gordon has (so far) 46 crash related DNFs. Petty had 349 DNFs in his career and Gordon (so far) has 74, a long way off from Petty.

Jimmie Johnson went from a medicore at best Busch driver to a champion in a Hendrick car. It's like fucking Fomula 1, you're in a McLaren or Ferrari and all of a sudden you look like a great driver.
