Well I know that most audiences in the far east are quiet during events to allow the artist and the performers the freedom and respect to play or perform. It is more out of respect than it is of boredom. A lot of wrestling shows in Japan are silent until a great move or something impressive happens and they clap in appreciation, then quiet again to let them continue their work.
