  • 2:35 for the announcement.

  • I wonder if a 15 year old Sidney Crosby knew then that he would end those games with the greatest moment in olympic history?

  • @beastlyshins Or if a young skier from Quebec named Alex Bilodeau knew that he would make history as the first Canadian to win an Olympic gold medal on home soil?

  • andorra la vella bidded this year???

  • @scorpioninpink yes it did lol, with venues in Spain and France.

  • @password45671 wth, that's why they did not win.... hahaha... the venues are in spain and france...

  • @scorpioninpink Half were in Andorra, the luge track in France some mountain events/hockey in Jaca, Spain which also bid for the 2014 Olympics. The plan was too spread out for them to win. Besides Andorra has never won an Olympic medal, which means the IOC is extremely unlikely to award them the games.

  • wow I remember this like it was yesturday.

  • I still get chills watching this :)

  • im korean and i remember that i was almost crying at that time but!it was really nice olympic:) i miss canada

  • I still remember watching this in my living room, extremely nervous. Then I was jubilant. This video gives me the goosebumps every time I watch it. Those 3 weeks in Vancouver were amazing!

  • NEXT BIGGEST MOMENT IN VANCOUVER WILL BE THE ARRIVAL OF THE STANLEY CUP.

  • This still gives me chills even when i watch it 8 years later..

  • aahhh i miss the olympics so much!

  • I remember I was in 8th grade when this happened. Actually in 8th grade math summer school, lol. Anyway, I was like "meh, don't care", but then 7 years later and 7 years older I had the most amazing 2 weeks of my life so far. I've never been more proud to be a Canadian, and a Vancouverite!!!

  • i'm from the philippines and i remember this very well. i was so nervous that i couldn't watch it. i remember watching toronto lose in 2001. so i pretended i was asleep then my friend texted me that salzburg was already eliminated. then another text came vancouver has won the bid and immediately turn the tv on. my cousin-in-law in vancouver learned of vancouver's victory after i called her. time flies.

  • I remember this day we were on vacation in Whistler when they made the announcement I was 9 years old and looked at my Dad and said are we going and he said yes and he kept his promise I can't believe exactly a year ago I was arriving in Canada for the Olympics it was one of the best weeks of my life I'll never forget it.

  • Cant beleive this is already over.

I remember being a little child watching this announcment! I woke up at 7am waiting for this and i rememeber crying after realizing what had happened. And 8 years later it was over one year ago! Hard to believe.

  • actually those where the members of the vancouver olmypic committee in prague

    that started to cheeer

  • vancouver 2010 was the best olympics ever

  • I remember watching this for like hours and i broke my leg after jumping up in joy!!

  • I love you, Vancouver!

  • great moment in history!

    CANADIAN PRIDE! =D

  • ROFL!!! In Prague they all start to chear!!! 0:24

  • Manuela Di Centa looked so sexy in this video; she must have given Jacques Rogge a run for his money!

  • Is that Manuela di Centa I'm hearing? Please tell me.

  • i get chills everytime i see this!

what a good games canada :D

  • This is amazing

  • seeing the celebration, it was like a preview of what the olympics would be like

  • unfortunately i was visiting saskatchewan at the time, but i still got to brag to all my relatives there

  • wow cant believe whistler was competiting against vancouver but still had some events..HAHA

  • @chixxgirl2 They were not competing, they just had the cameras set up in Whistler and in Vancouver. I thought that too at first but realized, that could never happen.

  • @TheHoody46 at first i was like why would whistler bid there like a few kms away and plus thats where all the mountains are

  • I was at gm place when this happened total mad house....wow but it was awesome

  • but CBC did not get to broadcast them!

  • @beastlyshins

I don't think CBC could have done what CTV and their consortium did for the games. The coverage was amazing and unprecedented.

  • how do you get the olympics to choose a city

  • Changed not only BC, but all of Canada!

  • Thank you Jack Poole.

  • @silexent Definitely. RIP Jack Poole, you will most certainly be missed.

  • can't believe the games have come and gone. i remember not being able to watch this announcement as i was so nervous. i was curled up in bed that night here in the philippine then a friend texted me that vancouver won that's the only time i opened the TV and tune in to CNN and saw the celebrations.

  • Oh gee, years goes by like lightning... I already misses it. But I'm pretty sure it won't be coming back to Canada for a while. I think they have to go all around the globe. And it kinda pisses me off about Toronto only rooting for summer olympics... Idk if that's true. But yes it's going to be Quebec city or Toronto.

  • wow 2003! some of the olympians were still in elementary school haha

  • Note about Sarajevo from Jacques Rogge...

Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics.

  • The GM Place, where all Vancouverites celebrated, would hold the ice hockey tournaments of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

  • It always felt like 2010 would be in a far distant future and now here it is. Also, I wonder what the heck I was doing on July 2, 2003 at 8:41am? I live in Vancouver but at that time I wasn't much into the Olympic spirit until now.

  • I think Quebec City should bid next. Great location, cold and beautiful!

  • Yup Quebec would be the next place in Canada to host.

  • @brokenbrainz1 Speculation and economics plus envirometal impact would suggest Calgary would be a more ideal location....all things considered.

  • @Motigflames Calgary just hosted the games in 88 though so it is ruled out. Quebec is the only place in Canada that is suitable and hasn't hosted yet, although Montreal did host a Summer Games.

  • @brokenbrainz1 No previous host can and have hosted the games before. Calgary to host again is the economical, smart and enviromental choice.

  • Quebec City will be the next Winter bid for Canada but they really need to fine tune their bid. Sans the bribery scandal during the 2002 bid Quebec City finished last in the voting and its reported that their bid had lots of problems.

  • The opening and ceremonies were bland, but the action in Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic games was very exciting.

Both the United States and Canada did really well.

The United States broke Germany's 2002 Salt Lake City mark for the most total medals in a single Winter Olympics with 37.

Canada broke Norway's 2002 Salt Lake City mark for the most gold medals in a single Winter Olympics with 14.

    Germany and Norway did well.

    Russia? Disappointing.

  • @joesakic91 I though the Ceremonies were quite well done abeautiful.

    Some of the best really.

  • @Motigflames

    Well, I respect your opinion.

Still, it's all about the action in between the opening and ceremonies.

Both the United States and Canada did really well. Germany and Norway did well too.

    Russia? Not so much.

  • not only Norway's mark of 13 gold in SLC but also the Soviet's mark of 13 from Innsbruck 1976.

  • it sad and hard to believe its already over lets hope quebec city or toronto gets one in the 2020's

  • Toronto i'm sure is preparing itself for another run at the Summer Olympics. if they are successful in hosting the 2015 Panams they are well in position to win either 2024 or 2028.

  • @lexlib I hope toronto will win the 2028 not 2024 cuz i want my nation to host the olympics, but its still ok if they win cuz i'm in canada :]

  • I am so proud that my city has hosted the succesfull Vancouver 2010 Games, even though the partying in Downtown Vancouver ( where I live ) was sometimes annoying=)

  • omg i was screaming so loud when i heard vancouver won i mean knew i couldnt go their because its to far away from where i am but still happy that it was in canada

  • Québec 2022!! Support!!

  • this was 2003. Years of work. Complaints and bitterness and excitement.

Then the torch relay and 17 days.

The Olympics can bring Canadians together like no other government program or company ever could

  • Great job, Vancouver! I'm from Toronto and I was disappointed we lost the bid for 2008 but at least it came back to Canada. :)

  • proud to live in vancouver, I can still hear holland park, it is going to be difficult adjusting to life in vancouver without the olympic parties and celebrations...

  • Nice job Vancouver. A fantastic Olympics. It could be the last time a winter or summer olympics are held in North America for awhile so i saviored every minute. Congrats on putting on a great olympics.

  • i live in vancouver, and we won gold for mens hockey !! the closing ceremony just ended. I LOVED IT! CANADA ROCKEs.

  • my god, this is like Canada winning an Oscar. but you know what, Toronto for 2020 Summer Olympics!

  • I'm an American and this video even gave ME goosebumps!! Good olympics, Vancouver!

  • lol this is clowning man, we been preparing for 7 years an the Americans have so many more medals than us

  • Quality over quantity buddy!

  • Your a sad excuse for a Canadian. Canada has the most GOLD medals the anyone in the Olympics, more the EVERYONE!

The Olympics are won, not by total metals, but by the most GOLD medals

  • true say, close to the all time record too!

  • i think the best part of the olympics is all the people celebrating on the street having a great time cheering for canada or their own countries, that's what makes it the most fun

  • Its heart warming. :)

    Go Canada Go!

  • My younger brother had bellowed in delight at the results on his tv set, which nearly had me jump 10 feet in the air,& then move quickly into his bedroom with a 'Who,What,When,Where,Why?!' look on my face. I had personally believed my homeland was gonna luck out,boy was I wrong or what?

  • With glowing hearts we see thee rise,

The True North strong and free!

  • Damn, makes me wish I still lived there.

  • @winegarden666 me too i moved rite before the games started =(

  • makes me honored to be a Canadian :D!

  • And now.....7 years later...LET THE GAMES BEGIN

  • 35mintues away~ god bless canada-

    RIP GOERRGIAN LUGER

  • we are the greatest country in the world.

  • its only 9 hours away

  • i was at GM Place when it was announced! IT WAS DEAFENING! this is sooo awesome. The torched passed by my house and every thing cant wait for hockey and the opening ceremony.

  • I totally guessed right, I said I was gonna be 31 when the olympics finally came... im 31!!!!! WOW!

  • I can't wait, I live in the greater Vancouver and I am going to see the olympics, back then, it felt like a long ways away, but here we are. 1 day to go!

  • I remember when it happened it felt like a long way off and now they are in 2 days

  • I can't believe this happened six and a half years ago, and the actual thing is just a mere one and a half days away!

  • What a Glorious moment that was!!!! And it will continue through the Games!!! Vancouver #1!!!!

  • I am in Richmond and seeing the torch relay today was phenomenal!

  • Good luck VANCOUVER!!!!!!! I am sure Vancouver will be the BEST host, Ey!!!!!

  • Could someone please tell me what year and date this was announced? Thanks!

  • Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at 8:41 am Pacific Standard Time.

  • it seems like just yesterday i was sitting on my couch waiting to hear if canada would get it or not!

  • this was the bid announcement i couldn't bear watch as i was so nervous.

  • How much must it suck for the losing cites? Like a million people in a shocked, disappointed silence. Anyway, I cant wait for Vancouver 2010!!

  • All eyes in Canada and across the rest of the world are on Vancouver and Canada, make us proud Vancouver!

    From, Ottawa

  • i've never been so proud to be a Vancouverite before. What a moment!

  • Please get your facts straight. Cypress is only holding two events: snowboarding and freestyle skiing. And VANOC has moved enough snow required to hold these events including contingency snow, and snow machines are on full blast as we speak. Even the athletes competing at Cypress are not worried.

Whistler up north is hosting most of the snow events and there are absolutely no snow problems. In fact, there has been a record snowfall in Whistler.

  • LOL made you write so much after a comment, i win, i was talking bout downtown not the mountains, noob

  • Who the hell cares if there's snow in downtown? We would be better off without snow in the city. As long as there's enough snow in the mountains for competitions, everyone's happy dumbass.

  • Even a 16-year old should know that Vancouver is better without snow...roads become a mess, few can drive, public transit is packed and even more so with the Olympic crowds. Use your head...but then again, you're 16 and immature.

Sochi, Russia is hosting the 2014 Winter Games, and it's in a subtropical area where there definitely won't be any snow come February 2014.

  • Who cares about transit? u dont like to play with snow anymore? o yeaa i forgot, ur an adult. I say let there be Ice! see how much cars can crash :D

i thought the 2014 olympics were in china

  • If you knew about anything, you'd know that the 2010 Olympic Games depend on public transit to work. I like snow, I just don't want it during the Games when it'll only hamper logistics and transportation. This city cannot deal snow.

You're young and incapable of critical thinking. If you want to "play" in the snow, go to the mountains or wait for a colder winter.

  • @Voros1993 Clearly your mind is not working. We all like snow, but too much of a good thing is a bad thing. Apparently, you don't seem to recognize that.

  • WTH are u talking about. If your talking about snow on cypress, there's plenty. If your talking about know in Vancouver downtown, theres none. Good. Warmer for everyone.

  • Looks like prague jumped the gun and thought they one LMFAO! 2:45

  • Prague was where it was announced, the people jumping at Prague are the Vancouver bid team.

  • Wow. The pride. The honor.... and then the hangover. The greed and payoff for the real estate and land development moguls. The Debt that the poor working stiffs are going to pay for years and years. The traffic and pollution that will come in the following years because we want the world to move here. Only the wealthy who live in the clean air of West Van or off shore are the only ones that are going to benefit. The rest of us are going to wallow in their shit.

  • not even West Van has it good, that's the pathway to Whistler, and so many commute downtown... I'm proud of the city and it's something we'll never forget, but not necessarily for all the best reasons.

  • Over one month to go before these Games!

  • I LOVE THIS COUNTRY! What a moment! :)

  • Amazing. I am happy its coming home. And I am also amazed that I have never seen such a Happy Announcement for an olympic city.. I have never seen that kind of reaction ever.. Well Deserved Vancouver..

  • i remember screaming and waking up the rest of the house while watching this. still gives me chills. only month and a half away!!!!!!

  • My god, do they know how to build up anticipation!

The city pride after that must've been at astronomical levels. I was in NYC the day they lost 2012 to London, and the entire place seemed deflated.

  • My gosh, I still get emotional every time I watch this. I cheered while still half asleep.

  • YAY!

  • Vancouver is so far the largest city to have host the Winter Olympics.

  • lol look how happy vancouver is.
