@MrConnorJP If you drill a small hole in the centre of the lid (1-2mm) and loosely cover the hole with some electrical tape, when you break the vacuum in the pump line suddenly, the jar will suck the tape down for a seal.
You'll have to pump it down past the effect you're looking for as some air gets in when the tape is sucked in by the hole. It takes a few tries, but if you have a good lid and hole seal, it will hold for weeks. A valve in the lid is another way with more control.
Dude that is my favorite plasma video I have ever seen. The only time I ever saw anything cooler was when I used avariable power supply from a novelty plasma globe in a setup where I could use different gasses like argon and helium. Do you know why your capacitive coupling setup causes the fantastic standing wave pattern?
@captainTubes Thanks! My understanding is that the dark spaces are formed when electrons/gas molecules collide picking up energy, and the light spaces when that energy is released. If I had both electrodes in the vacuum I the pattern would be similar, but if DC was used, the pattern would be on the + side. With DC both electrodes have to be inside the jar. Capacitive coupling is just another way to put energy into the jar without putting a hole into the glass bottom.
Tks helixwinder, if you want you can free download my e-book "Longitudinal dielectric waves...in a Tesla Coil" from my website: deltaavalon (click on Tesla page) ;-)
@HorizonDelta Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. If you haven't already, go to electrotherapy(dot)com. Jeff has a youtube presence as electrotherapy also. He is an avid experimenter and collector of all things Tesla.
Is there a way i can pull a vacuum in the jar then seal it so i dont need to use a pump every time?

I meant to say "remotely as cool", not cooler ;)

The changes occur as the air is pumped out of the jar.

The plasma change is by the frequency?

hi, nice experiment,
can you tell me please, exactly whats the schematic of your flyback driver.
thanks

very neat! i wonder if you could build a fusor out of a flyback. just a demo of one. i wouldnt mind trying that if i had vacuum pump.
