Basketball is obviously much more fun to watch than marathons, but I have way more respect for these runners as athletes. Running is the purest form of competition and it truly tests the limits of the human body and mind.
Something announcers need to stress is that they are running really fast. For instance, I liked when he said, "try to do it for 200m on your own". Thats what sucks about our sport. When someone is running a 3:50 mile, they have such fluid form that they dont look like they are running hard, and people cant see the difference between that and an 8:00 mile.
"one of the things that's difficult in our sport is that it doesn't look like lebron james windmill dunking from the foul line. It looks like a guy running down the street until you try to do it for 200 meters on your own and say 'oh that's real hard'" --- I agree!! People who don't run have a hard time appreciating this sport because it just looks so easy until you actually try to do it and realize that you have to be practically superhuman to do what these guys do!
@tomhetistgut3 My jaw dropped when I realized they're basically running my mile pr back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to ... ... unbelievable
I have to disagree. The way Hall uses his arms is insanity. It takes a lot of extra energy to pull your elbows back and together like that and it keeps your back from working right. Ritz, in contrast has world class form; all that movement of his upper body is very efficient because it puts his weight exactly over his and moves him easily from leg to leg. Watch him setting the new American 5k record in Zurich recenlty -- his form matches the form of all the other competitors.
Then Ritz beat Hall in the Olympics... You can't figure out who had the better form by looking at who won. Form is only one factor in who wins. That's why people don't agree on what's good form, because you can't compare runners to each other to see what works best, you can only compare them to themselves running different ways, or compare them to the general pool of runners of equal caliber. Ritz looks more like the majority of runners like him; Hall looks weird. That's one clue.
I've maintained a similar form my entire running career but could never imagine running my marathons at that pace. BQ at 18 and I may have form like him but his PR is 45 minutes better than mine, and I can't fathom the training required to maintain that speed with the form. it must be awesome being able to do it so effortlessly so fast.
The guy at 0:34 couldn't keep up with him... Lol
