Agreed. With that many people getting killed, not to mention the ones not being killed, it was simply just too large of an operation to be unknown to every German civilian, I don't buy that. The rail networks ran through populated areas, a good number of the large camps were near towns and other built up areas, and the civilian manpower needed to help operate the camps cannot be ignored. Elie Wiesel said German kids threw rocks at them as they were marched through the town.

In the military we have a lot of contracted-out civilian manpower doing a lot of random things on-base. All the civilians in the area know we are around and what we do, many of them wouldn't have a living if it wasn't for the Army having a base in or near their town. I know it was not very different for the German military, they also relied heavily on civilian manpower to help out. I think some Germans did not know, but I believe many or most of them did, how couldn't they?

Who said it was not a holocaust for all the victims. The Jews NEVER deny that and always advocate for everyone. The reason it was a particularly horrific holocaust for Jews is because the attempt was to destroy every last one of them (of an already tiny word population). YOU need to get perspective. Look at percentages and see who the holocaust affected the worst.

@Lagolop It's been my experience that when people talk about the holocaust, they rarely talk about all the other victims. Obviously, since I'm the one who brought it up, I recognize all the victims of the holocaust. Let's look at some popular movies about the holocaust Schindler's list, Holocaust, Escape from Sobibor and Hitler: The Rise of Evil all of these movies concentrated primarily on Jewish victims.

A FEW acted heroically. Heroic is not exactly the word I'd use in most cases. Some were paid, some acted like any Jew would have if the situation were reversed, like HUMAN BEINGS helping others.

@Lagolop By blood I could claim to be Jewish but I was raised Roman Catholic and I became an atheist as an adult. As for the graffiti, it's mostly kids who have no idea what they are doing and what the symbols mean and sometimes use the wrong symbols like a cross and 3 dots (which is usually considered anti-black).
Being Jewish is an difficult thing to describe in some ways. It can mean a practitioner of Judaism in which case it has no ethnic connotation. OTOH, if you have "real" Jewish blood you can claim to be ethnically Jewish and still be an atheist. They do exist; trust me I know. But I have never heard of a Catholic Jew; it makes no more sense than saying a Protestant Catholic or a Jewish Protestant.
OTOH, if you are born Jewish you will remain Jewish regardless of religion (or not).
@Lagolop Bill Maher and Christopher Hitchens are both Catholic Jew atheists. My mother's mother was born to a Jewish woman, which means I could call myself a Jew, but I don't recognize Jews as anything other than a religion. From what I understand (and I'm not really up on all the rules despite having lifelong best friends that are practicing Jews), anyone can become a Jew and their kids would certainly be recognized as Jews even if they themselves aren't always accepted.

If you ask one of your orthodox Jewish neighbors they can help you because they will speak their mother tongue which is Yiddish. @Lagolop The only people I would actually know well enough to ask such a favor are from 3 different families, all lifelong friends (since we were teens), but none of them or their parents are orthodox Jews and are just like Catholics who have Catholic weddings and funerals and go to church on Christmas and Easter and celebrate the big holidays but otherwise don't take their religion too seriously. My one friend's grandmother does speak Yiddish so maybe next time I see her, I will ask her.

@Lagolop You have to realize there are 2 sets of Jews, the original semitic middle east Jews and the converts from Europe (there was a large scale conversion in Europe under a particular dictator somewhere in Europe, I forget the details). I think the success of the modern Jews is because of the oppression. Jews raise their kids to value education, at least the middle class and wealthy (there are poor Jews), because they know that without it they would get nowhere.

@Lagolop Jews are badmouthed, but that is about the extent of it, at least in my area. Where I have seen the most prejudice and bad mouthing of Jews was in school. The Jewish kids were sometimes picked on or called kikes and so on. The worst incident that I know of is something that happened to a life-long best friend when he was in HS. Some asshole came up from behind him and kicked him down a flight of steps calling him a kike. Me and few other friends took care of that kid later on that day.
@christo930 And keep in mind that I had no idea of my "jewish blood" at the time. I didn't find out until well into adulthood, it just never came up. So you see, people can be good and accepting of Jews who aren't themselves Jews. My circle of friends contained Jews and non-jews as well as blacks. We just found people we liked, had stuff in common with and we got along and many of these friendships have survived 27 years.

While I admit most friendships are fleeting, there are some that endure and I would rather rely on close friends then some supposed in-group that I don't relate to and are in a foreign nation. Did you know that the south was settled VERY early on my Jews. There were plenty south of the Mason Dixon line. Some were generals and high level politicos at the time. @Lagolop No, I didn't know that. What I have read is that there are a few places in the US where most of the American Jews live with Philly and NYC being the 2 biggest ones. I live in NE Philly which has a very large Jewish community. Oddly enough, many of the "old Jews" moved out and now there are a great deal of Russian Jews. Unfortunately, this particular group of Jews have a bad rap because there is a huge Russian Mob centered in NE Philadelphia. A LOT of organized crime, ID theft etc.
I would say that the crime is due to Russian criminals, n ot Russian Jewish people per se. Not all Russian Jews are "mob". Most are not. When ppl say this stuff it gives fodder to the Jew haters and Israel deniers. Italians are "mob" too BUT not all. Most are just normal ppl. There is organized crime everywhere. Agreed. With that many people getting killed, not to mention the ones not being killed, it was simply just too large of an operation to be unknown to every German civilian, I don't buy that. The rail networks ran through populated areas, a good number of the large camps were near towns and other built up areas, and the civilian manpower needed to help operate the camps cannot be ignored. Elie Wiesel said German kids threw rocks at them as they were marched through the town.

In the military we have a lot of contracted-out civilian manpower doing a lot of random things on-base. All the civilians in the area know we are around and what we do, many of them wouldn't have a living if it wasn't for the Army having a base in or near their town. I know it was not very different for the German military, they also relied heavily on civilian manpower to help out. I think some Germans did not know, but I believe many or most of them did, how couldn't they?

Obviously, since I'm the one who brought it up, I recognize all the victims of the holocaust. Let's look at some popular movies about the holocaust Schindler's list, Holocaust, Escape from Sobibor and Hitler: The Rise of Evil all of these movies concentrated primarily on Jewish victims.

A FEW acted heroically. Heroic is not exactly the word I'd use in most cases. Some were paid, some acted like any Jew would have if the situation were reversed, like HUMAN BEINGS helping others.

As for the graffiti, it's mostly kids who have no idea what they are doing and what the symbols mean and sometimes use the wrong symbols like a cross and 3 dots (which is usually considered anti-black).

Being Jewish is an difficult thing to describe in some ways. It can mean a practitioner of Judaism in which case it has no ethnic connotation. OTOH, if you have "real" Jewish blood you can claim to be ethnically Jewish and still be an atheist. They do exist; trust me I know. But I have never heard of a Catholic Jew; it makes no more sense than saying a Protestant Catholic or a Jewish Protestant.
OTOH, if you are born Jewish you will remain Jewish regardless of religion (or not).

@Lagolop Bill Maher and Christopher Hitchens are both Catholic Jew atheists. My mother's mother was born to a Jewish woman, which means I could call myself a Jew, but I don't recognize Jews as anything other than a religion. From what I understand (and I'm not really up on all the rules despite having lifelong best friends that are practicing Jews), anyone can become a Jew and their kids would certainly be recognized as Jews even if they themselves aren't always accepted.

If you ask one of your orthodox Jewish neighbors they can help you because they will speak their mother tongue which is Yiddish. Yiddish is based on Medieval High German which is similar to Bavarian, Swiss and Austrian and other HIgh Germans. Mind you the German in the vid is Hochdeutch or standard German but mot speakers of Yiddish can understand it.

@Lagolop The only people I would actually know well enough to ask such a favor are from 3 different families, all lifelong friends (since we were teens), but none of them or their parents are orthodox Jews and are just like Catholics who have Catholic weddings and funerals and go to church on Christmas and Easter and celebrate the big holidays but otherwise don't take their religion too seriously. My one friend's grandmother does speak Yiddish so maybe next time I see her, I will ask her.

@Lagolop i can't believe the North behaved the way they did. At least Lincoln tried to make up for it and stop the Antisemitism. I really don't understand Antisemitism. The only thing I can think of is really the fault of the Christians because the Christians of Europe would not allow Jews into industry and were mostly made into bankers and merchants and it's pretty easy to hate someone you are indebted to. Well, at least things are getting better.

Jews were traditionally an agricultural people (they are back at it, just look what agricultural innovations they have created since Israel was reborn.
Reduced to money lenders, some trades and city dwellers (living mostly in poverty) in Europe cuz they were for a large extent, not allowed to have farmland. Thank God that has changed and all thanks to Israel and yet more Jewish ingenuity. Yet despite those odds they STILL managed to prosper in Europe. Maybe they r "chosen".

@Lagolop You have to realize there are 2 sets of Jews, the original semitic middle east Jews and the converts from Europe (there was a large scale conversion in Europe under a particular dictator somewhere in Europe, I forget the details). I think the success of the modern Jews is because of the oppression. Jews raise their kids to value education, at least the middle class and wealthy (there are poor Jews), because they know that without it they would get nowhere.

@christo930 The idea of being god's chosen people is stupid when you consider that there is no god, at least none that we can detect. God certainly didn't choose or take care of the European Jews from 33-45. I find that line of thinking dangerous. We apes need to figure out that there is no sky-daddy that is going to fix all of our problems and prejudices, that we apes are alone in a cold inhospitable world and universe. We are so insignificant that our planet is invisible before leaving the SS.

No, there is not. Most Jews r ethnically related regardless of origin. Not to say there was no mixing between Christian & Jewish Euros, but admixture has been proven to be relatively small. As for you conversion ideas, NOPE, most Ashkenazi (even the blond blue eyed ones) have genome commonality with the Eastern Jews.
Yes there were those in Europe that converted to Judaism but there was never any "large scale conversion" as u wrote.

U know yourself how hard it is to convert to Judaism AND you said yourself that Jews have never proselytized (you admire that). In fact most Rabbis will turn ppl away a few times before agreeing to convert them. They want to make sure the potential convert is sincere.

That surprises u? Why? Jews are still discriminated against and bad mouthed on a regular "American" basis. Now it is based on jealousy for their success (and they are blamed for the failures of others). You think the USA is a great place for Jews and a safe spot? In Israel that does not occur.

@Lagolop Jews are badmouthed, but that is about the extent of it, at least in my area. Where I have seen the most prejudice and bad mouthing of Jews was in school. The Jewish kids were sometimes picked on or called kikes and so on. The worst incident that I know of is something that happened to a life-long best friend when he was in HS. Some asshole came up from behind him and kicked him down a flight of steps calling him a kike. Me and few other friends took care of that kid later on that day.

@christo930 And keep in mind that I had no idea of my "jewish blood" at the time. I didn't find out until well into adulthood, it just never came up. So you see, people can be good and accepting of Jews who aren't themselves Jews. My circle of friends contained Jews and non-jews as well as blacks. We just found people we liked, had stuff in common with and we got along and many of these friendships have survived 27 years.

I find it refreshing that those days are long gone. Few ppl will mess with Jews these days since they no longer "turn the other cheek". Rather, they kick the shit out of anybody that hurts them or tries to do so. I think Israel shows the world just how serious they are about defending Jews.
If you want to see Jewish force in action, simply watch any IDF or even krav maga vids on YT. Most enjoyable :)

@Lagolop You have to realize, he was attacked for being Jewish, but he was defended because he was our friend. In other words, it had nothing to do with defending a Jew, it was defending our friend. While I admit most friendships are fleeting, there are some that endure and I would rather rely on close friends then some supposed in-group that I don't relate to and are in a foreign nation. If anything like the NSDAP ever came to the US and I wasn't found out, I would risk my tail for my friends.

@christo930 I doubt I would be found out because I was raised Christian as was my mother and father and their parents, so I would be safe as long as they don't use DNA. But I can tell you that I would care more for my friends then some random Jew in Israel would. To me these men are flesh and blood, real people with families hopes and dreams and so on, whereas to someone in Israel, they are just a name. It's well and good to help Jews from the safety of Israel, it's another thing to act here.

While there are neo-nazi's in the US, they are at most a few hundred or a couple thousand spread across the 3rd largest nation in the world and out of 307m souls. The US political system is much more resilient then the WR's was. We can't even get libertarians on the ballot, you think we are going to get national socialists on the ballot, let alone elected? Furthermore, the people they most often target are blacks and Hispanics, not Jews.

There are people who converted to Catholicism that are Cardinal or something like that. One in France was thought to become toe Pope at one time. Can't remember his name. I'm not big on religion myself and I was not raised in a religious home either. But I am no atheist; I do believe in a higher power.

Despite what you might think, there simply isn't any strong Antisemitism, at least not where I live. Did you know that the south was settled VERY early on my Jews. There were plenty south of the Mason Dixon line. Some were generals and high level politicos at the time. The first settlers to the New World were in fact Jews; Columbus's crew was mainly made up of Marano escaping the Inquisition. Now many ppl in Colorado, NM, AZ and CA are rediscovering their Jewish roots. It's bizarre but interesting.
I believe the IDF can take care of Iran if need be.

@Lagolop No, I didn't know that. What I have read is that there are a few places in the US where most of the American Jews live with Philly and NYC being the 2 biggest ones. I live in NE Philly which has a very large Jewish community. Oddly enough, many of the "old Jews" moved out and now there are a great deal of Russian Jews. Unfortunately, this particular group of Jews have a bad rap because there is a huge Russian Mob centered in NE Philadelphia. A LOT of organized crime, ID theft etc.

I would say that the crime is due to Russian criminals, n ot Russian Jewish people per se. Not all Russian Jews are "mob". Most are not. When ppl say this stuff it gives fodder to the Jew haters and Israel deniers. Italians are "mob" too BUT not all. Most are just normal ppl. There is organized crime everywhere. @Lagolop I agree wholeheartedly, which is why I said that the Russian Jews have a bad rap because of the presence of Russian organized crime. In other words, I was trying to say that Russian Jews, most of which are just ordinary working people like the rest of us get lumped in with the Russian mob by certain ignorant people. Another thing that adds to the problem is that the Russians tend to be very much aloof from Americans and have a very strong sense of being Russian..
