There are rules, of course. One simple rule is that every word that ends whith -um is a "ett word". För example universum -> universumet, museum->museet etc.

And one thing more: Swedes(=people who know swedish?) get this wrong more often then they realize, for example when confront words... There are no "sluts" in language! ( interpret it as you wish. It will still be true).

Usually when you put "the" before a word in english, it then ends with "en" in swedish.

The tables - borden, the chair- stolen, the dog - hunden, the cat-katten etc :)

@TheMetaSlim Norwegian is easier then Swedish as it dont have all that "En" "et" "arna" "er" etc it always end with the same at the end of the word kinda like there is "The" in english etc ( hard to explain ) some words are also closer to english the word "Window is in norwegian "vinde" i think and in Swedish "Fönster".

The whole heritage thing is so extremely more important for people from the US than for Swedes. Or just for the fact that it's such a complicated language and you wont a challenge.
