Nice Video!! I especially agree on the repect your instrument part. In India Classical music playing or singing is started off by teaching a pupil to respect his instrument and his teacher before all else.
all in all I guess is to take it serious. Cause the learning curve is pretty big and you shoud take it seriously or you will not see your results and you will give up after a few months or a year of practicing.
your exactly right quality over quantity i've only been playing guitar for 2 years and i've met people who been playing for like 5 and there like well how are you so good and i tell them it's not about how long you practice it's about what your learning while your practicing if you can at least learn 1 new thing everyday that's real good.
Finaly! I have been looking for something like this! you are being subscribed by me from this very moment on!
All the tips you gave were grate, and I agree on all of them. the only thing is I cant find anything to practise on. no exercises, no nothing. I end up playing songs I know and stuff, and basically playing because its fun. I have been on this spot for some time. lately I heard about the pentatonic scale, and I have been playing around it like crazy. I am really hungry for some new stuff!
I recommend you maybe get around the warmups in the video. as "un-musical" as they may be, they can definately get your fingers in shape and around the fretboard for when you begin to learn about arpeggios and more "advanced" chords... (if thats your thing)
BOTTOM LINE:
PRACTICE THINGS YOU DONT KNOW. You really accomplish nothing by practicing the things you know, cause you know them. if you challenge yourself and do things you arent used to, you'll come out better in the end.
This is an awesome lesson. Thanks a lot! Are you from New Jersey? I don't hear a distinct accent but you remind me so much of a friend I have in Philly (but he reminds me of New Jersians).
Im from Miami, born and raised here. I dont even think i was hanging out with my teacher form NY at the time i made this - which would be the only reason i could sound like a northerner :D
wow man i totally agree with everything you sid is correct!!!!!!!1 and you are right when you say that half of the guitar players don;t care half about half of the list heheh
No I haven't. But I myself have to work hard at playing without tension, and I have been playing for 20 years. Alot of bad habits I developed. I also noticed your stretches from John Petrucci's Video's.
I will give credit where credit is due and i must say Jamey Andreas is one hell of a teacher. Her techniques and teachings have really influenced my playing, though its something i really have to work hard at. Especially to be able to play effortlessly and with as little tension as possible.
Have you read her newer book... not the first one principles of correct practice.
nobody has commented in a year? the fingertip thing was helpful. I could never figure out why my playing is always slightly muddy.
