@SacredFractals That is a very valid question. Was Jesus falsely compassionate? Absolutely not. You are correct, we all have sin on our souls. The essential difference is this: Jesus forgave the adulterer when she humbled herself and firmly resolved to love & follow Jesus. We are all called to "forgive those that trespass against us". Bishop Sheen is referring to moral relativism, whose follower believes "if it feels right to you, then it's the right thing to do." Crime without consequence.

False compassion is the counterfeit of authentic compassion, if I understand Bishop Sheen correctly. It is compassion granted to those who have done wrong, rather than upon whom the wrong was done. I have watched the Bishop since I was a child in the early 1950's. It is so good to see him again now that I am grown and can more fully understand his teaching. Thank you for sharing these videos.

Yes- compassion means to 'suffer with', and really our compassion should be directed at those who suffer for doing right, or those who suffer through no fault of their own. To show compassion to someone because they sinned is bogus- rather, a call to repentance would be far more appropriate, and which would be the more loving approach.

I must be careful with this one. While we are to hate the sin, we must love the sinner. Jesus prefered to be with prostitutes and tax collectors (who publicly had to acknowledge their sinfullness, to those who believed they were justified. Since I know my own weakness, I know that is not through condemning but through performing the corporal acts of mercy and the spiritual acts of mercy (which Our Lord says our judgment will be based upon). What Bishop Sheen is talking about is not warning.

Actually, I would say be careful with the motto "love the sinner, hate the sin"-- simply because it is a motto. The phrase is not scriptural, and nowhere does Christ utter such a condensed, bumper-sticker saying.

We are to love the person, not the 'sinner.' The sinner qua sinner would have to be hated along with the sin; since a 'sinner' is defined precisely and solely by the choice to sin. We love a person by hating him insofar as he is a sinner.

Christ nowhere instructs his followers to hate the sinner. Christ himself prayed for his enemies as they crucified him. He says he who hates his brother is a murderer. Hate is not the attitude we are to have towards other humans, be they our brethren or our earthly enemies.

This does not mean we are to overlook the sins of another. Love includes the use of discipline and reproof when necessary.

False compassion has no aim but only to suffer with- and in effect to enable the continuation of sin. What Sheen is talking about is those who condone acts which go against the natural law. As a bishop of the Catholic Church he must stand for truth, whether the American public likes it or not. The only thing I have say against Sheen in this is when he says "to the homosexuals." What he should have said was "to those persons who engage in (and continue to engage in) homosexual acts." In effect, wanting religion (particularly Catholicism) to view their choice to have sex again and again as simply a "lifestyle deviation." Those who are of same sex orientation don't have the power to change who they are attacted to, but they do have the CHOICE to act on those desires and have sex or not.

I think I indeed understand that. As a Catholic, I get weary of people that are myopic in their judgements. However, I think it important to understand that compassion should eternally during our short little lives here on earth. Personally, I wish there was confessional next to me 24-7.
