The good bishop is right. Just look at the Catholic church today. It is full of these hippy liberals who want to further their false compassion agenda. They have deviated the chruch's teachings from saving souls to making it a social justice organization. Bishop Sheen must be rolling in his grave. It is because of these liberals that the church and the western world is in decline. No wonder people leave the church and never come back. It is because of these liberals Bishop Sheen was referring to
Does that mean that Jesus was falsley compassionate to the woman who committed adultery and was about to be stoned ..... We are all human .....we will always fall no matter how hard we try to be perfect like our Father in heaven. If we fail to have compassion for those who make mistakes, we fail to have compassion for ourselves when we make mistakes. Our Father has compassion for us ....Jesus has compassion for us .....we need to have compassion for ourselves and each other
@SacredFractals That is a very valid question. Was Jesus falsely compassionate? Absolutely not. You are correct, we all have sin on our souls. The essential difference is this: Jesus forgave the adulterer when she humbled herself and firmly resolved to love & follow Jesus. We are all called to "forgive those that trespass against us". Bishop Sheen is referring to moral relativism, whose follower believes "if it feels right to you, then it's the right thing to do." Crime without consequence.
@SacredFractals: I think Jesus granted forgiveness, not a license to sin. Sheen argues that false compassion permits crime by ignoring or explaining-away its sin. Jesus expected repentance.
Not following the authority which put the Bible together is also not Scriptural. The phrase Love the sinner but hate the sin is found frequently in the writings of the early church fathers, especially Augustine.
i have never heard such wisdom since solomon..this guy is outstandind...and just look at those eyes pure innocence the light of christ is pouring out of this man
2:10...so important! False compassion ignores the sins and wrong way of living that people engage in; it blinds the "compassionate" person from actually being motivated to help the sinner amend their ways. So true! And this way of thinking is so rooted in our society today: to mothers seeking abortions, gays in marriage, etc... IT is Satan, destroying beauty that God has put in place.
He loves everyone the person; but hates everyone's sin. The Homosexuals who are living a life of sin; by having sexual relations or just by kissing; they must not do this. God loves everyone; but hates all the sin. Homosexuals must live a priests, nuns, friars and monks; single all their life; until they can change to be able to marry a woman. The Church does not hate homosexuals; the Church hates the sins of all the people.
The truth is that we are all sinners. we need the Grace of God so that we have true compassion. God does truely love us but hates our Sin. Sheen was a God sent and even while he is gone his teachings have such an impact. he has done his part, what is my own part, and what is yours?
He's not saying don't show compassion for prostitutes, etc. He's saying don't show compassion for their sins. (Love the sinner, hate the sin.) The world today makes virtue of sin. That's his point.
False compassion is the counterfeit of authentic compassion, if I understand Bishop Sheen correctly. It is compassion granted to those who have done wrong, rather than upon whom the wrong was done. I have watched the Bishop since I was a child in the early 1950's. It is so good to see him again now that I am grown and can more fully understand his teaching. Thank you for sharing these videos.
Yes- compassion means to 'suffer with', and really our compassion should be directed at those who suffer for doing right, or those who suffer through no fault of their own. To show compassion to someone because they sinned is bogus- rather, a call to repentance would be far more appropriate, and which would be the more loving approach.
I must be careful with this one. While we are to hate the sin, we must love the sinner. Jesus prefered to be with prostitutes and tax collectors (who publicly had to acknowledge their sinfullness, to those who believed they were justified. Since I know my own weakness, I know that is not through condemning but through performing the corporal acts of mercy and the spiritual acts of mercy (which Our Lord says our judgment will be based upon). What Bishop Sheen is talking about is not warning.
Actually, I would say be careful with the motto "love the sinner, hate the sin"-- simply because it is a motto. The phrase is not scriptural, and nowhere does Christ utter such a condensed, bumper-sticker saying.
We are to love the person, not the 'sinner.' The sinner qua sinner would have to be hated along with the sin; since a 'sinner' is defined precisely and solely by the choice to sin. We love a person by hating him insofar as he is a sinner.
Christ nowhere instructs his followers to hate the sinner. Christ himself prayed for his enemies as they crucified him. He says he who hates his brother is a murderer. Hate is not the attitude we are to have towards other humans, be they our brethren or our earthly enemies.
This does not mean we are to overlook the sins of another. Love includes the use of discipline and reproof when necessary.
@jeichacker False compassion is compassion which enables sin. You see true compassion works for a good end- to help the suffering. False compassion has no aim but only to suffer with- and in effect to enable the continuation of sin. So when the drunkard wants 31 dollars (because they obviously want to buy drugs or alcohol) you only give them one dollar for the food they need and no extra for the vice/sin. The Devil it is said uses false compassion all the time to support the continuation of sin
publically funded abortion would be a prime example of false compassion. While it is right to feel compassion for difficult situations- it is not right to feel compassion for the mother who wants an abortion and cant afford one.
Sheen had his doctorate in philosophy, which he earned with highest honors from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. What Sheen is talking about is those who condone acts which go against the natural law. As a bishop of the Catholic Church he must stand for truth, whether the American public likes it or not. The Catholic Church has always stood against the state when it condones evil.
Jesus loved those sinners that loved who were honest with their sins, while the scribes etc were not. Love attracts love, when u love u move away from the 'I' 2 focus on others 2 focus on the u. u give,u build,u form communities,u forgive. We move away fro the 'I'.So let us focus not on 'that offends me, what can I get, i am owed' 2 'How can I help? What is God asking of me? I tolerate, I forgive' when we do that 2 those who are in true need - need not from the I - we are then in real compassion
What Sheen is talking about is nothing new. These sins have been around since Creation. But I'm great full that Sheen is remind us of how twisted the government and society at large think.
Fellow Christians, There is a "hate crimes bill" S.909 that was devised by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith in order to criminalize Christianity. Any Good Christian who publicly stands up for traditional marriage or protests the millions of babies murdered by abortion will be thrown in jail like in Canada. Check out truthtellers and watch Rev. Ted Pike's videos explaining the danger and then call your Senators toll free at 877-851-6437 and tell them NO on S.909. Save Our Constitution
(con't) been together twenty years or over (a rarity in today's instant gratification culture) and raised children. They'll tell you what TRUE love and TRUE compassion is if only the starstruck young couples of today would perk up their ears to gleam some real life wisdom. I think my own parents would agree with everything I've posted on this video as well. (I'm in my early 20s btw.)
to always be there for him (or her, if I have a lesbian daughter) if he is struggling with anything. I will support him as a person and encourage his talents/abilities and always show love even if he falls. You can fully love someone even if you totally completely disagree with what he or she does. Too many people today think that someone has to support them 100% in every act or opinion they have or it's not "love." What bullshit is that? If only true love was that easy. Ask parents who have
(con't) Gay and lesbian individuals who engage in sexual tyrists and in the same breath want religion/religious to view their sin with compassion have another thing coming. However, a gay and/or lesbian individual who suffers physical injuries, verbal insults, and other discrimination because they are outside the "normal" deserve my (and the Catholic Church's) full, TRUE compassion. If I get narried and my son comes to me one day and says 'i'm gay dad.' I throw my arms around him and promise
The only thing I have say against Sheen in this is when he says "to the homosexuals." What he should have said was "to those persons who engage in (and continue to engage in) homosexual acts." In effect, wanting religion (particularly Catholicism) to view their choice to have sex again and again as simply a "lifestyle deviation." Those who are of same sex orientation don't have the power to change who they are attacted to, but they do have the CHOICE to act on those desires and have sex or not.
@jbmadvids4401 And for good reason. He knew that they would ruin the morals of this world. He was right. They are the ones that push the false compassion agenda for terrorists, ghetto blacks and illegal immigrants. As a result the US and the western world has become a welfare state. It was stupid of people to let hippies rule and to give them the time of day. That is why the western wold is heading towards its doom. Read the book Slouching Towards Gomorrah by Robert Bork. It is enlightening.
Compassion to the repentent sinner, yes. But those who are unwilling to even admit their sins -- or for those who inist upon continuing in their vein, these people don't even have compassion for themselves.
Also, Archbishop Sheen is talking about enabling -- that is to say that society excuses wrondoings by showing false compassion to the sinner -- rather than adressing the sin itself.
I think I indeed understand that. As a Catholic, I get weary of people that are myopic in their judgements. However, I think it important to understand that compassion should eternally during our short little lives here on earth. Personally, I wish there was confessional next to me 24-7. I do tremble at the things I do. My idea of false compassion is when we fawn over people in order to gain an some advantage some how. Being Obsequious. But I do understand what you say too.
This reminds me of a meeting my momma and I busted at our Church. It was held by a pro-abortion nun who was having a prayer service over the execution of a man who had undoubtedly raped and murdered a six-year old girl. Who was this woman praying for? Not for the soul of that vile wretch who was to be executed, but for the governor who given the order. Where is your sanity, o man!
