Respectfully, I much prefer the Hendrix. I guess I just find this cheesier in places - personal taste. Nevertheless - there's something magical that happens with the bass guitar at 1:20-1:23 which adds awesome pace - love it... wish it were kept up longer.
Whoever disliked this needs to be totured brutally. This is a TUNE!!!!!!!!!!! To all Hendrix fans, I like the original... ish, but Brian TEARS IT UP!!!!!!!! Not to mention that his vocals are superbly awesome - a perfect battle of melodic sweet vocals and raging guitar; even on the slow riffs Red Special sounds like it's in a TEMPER!!!
It's a very beautiful cover. Not sure what happens to some of you guys, I think Jimmy would like it. Damn it. It's about music, it's about art. Not some ego war...
I'd like to see some more artwork going with this song, as opposed to just pictures of Brian. It's nice if people see his "soul" from a picture, but usually it detracts from the message as everyone just skims over the surface. The original Jimi Hendrix song is very deep. Brian himself will only talk about the music he enjoys in it, and the effects he used.
Three things that have the ability to transform people into vulgar, raging, arrogant a-holes: Bad drivers. Alcohol. YouTube. Can anyone explain to me why people use the comment box on a JIMI HENDRIX tune to display for all the world to see just what complete jerks they are? Makes one wonder if they are a-holes all the time. Do they cuss-out people they don't know? Do they verbally or physically abuse their wives and kids? Do they have any friends at all? They must get their asses kicked daily.
no matter where you go on youtube, you get dicks starting arguments.... perhaps people should reflect on the message of wisdom, spirituality and compassion that flows through the song above...
Whoa. I was so expecting not to like this (not a big fan of Brian May). This was very very good. True to the original beauty of the tune with personal touches added that work.
I understand how some people can say Hendrix's musical performance is better. I personally heard it backwards though - Brian's version first. Oh man, there is no way to leave it. It's accuracy, neatness, and full atmosphere really reveals what I least liked always about Hendrix - the sloppiness of sound. To be blunt, I always loved this song until I heard the original of which I can only appreciate it's intent.
Keep in mind that this here is very low quality...
@Typhoon792 listen dude, if you know even anything about music you wouldn't dare to say that Jimi is sloppy.. this cover is really nice, but Jimi is and always will be one of the greatest guitar players ever! and as I told you before Brian May does not belong to this category.. maybe it's because you are tonedeaf, but stop saying Jimi was sloppy, because he just wasn't!
@konogomang Tonedeaf.. Right, that's the last thing that I am. If you like Jimi's style of playing, that's fine. I don't, & the reason is that which I described. That's that. It's obvious you don't know anything about Brian May so please don't say random stupid things to counter my observation which btw has been forming for years. It is only now after hearing this in comparison that it became clear to me why I never liked Hendrix. His style of playing is very evidently sloppy & that says a lot.
@Typhoon792 And it's obvious you don't know anything about Hendrix's influence on May. Quotes:
"We (he and Mercury) were kind of disciples of Hendrix and The Beatles... obviously we had more technology than they had had, so we could push things a lot further. "
"... we were both big Hendrix fans. By that time Hendrix had come along and completely changed all our lives – particularly mine."
"I really thought I was pretty good before I saw Hendrix, and then I thought: Yeah, not so good."
@Typhoon792 Ok. A lot of young guns see only technique, don't get Hendrix or what he did. His chops were above standard back then. There was no MIT, no tech clinics. It was do or die. I always say, listen to any albums from 1967 and then put on Are You Experienced. Anyone who still doesn't get what Jimi at that point, never will. He created the modern tone palette for the electric guitar. Zep didn''t show until 69. Blackmoore in 68. Jeff Beck did distortion but Jimi was from another dimension.
@IYAMNI I understand all that. I never said I don't appreciate what Jimi did as for instance, as you said, he's one of the people that strongly inspired Brian May. All I'm saying is that I don't like his attitude towards what he's done, him as a person, and mainly the way he performed (including how he carried out the music, not just on stage I mean). His sloppy "lax" sort of style was not the result of a lack in technology.
@Typhoon792 Again, put any album from 67 to 70 side by side with Jimi. Axis came out in 68...Electric Ladyland in 68. Litlle Wing, All Along The Watchtower, Voodoo Chile Slight Return, Gypsy Eyes... these songs blew everyone else away. If Jimi was lax and sloppy, then everyone was lax and sloppy. Every guitarist today is standing on the backs of those precedents and the innovators that followed. May would tell you the same. He was an innovator too, took it in a whole new direction. Props due.
@IYAMNI Look, the reason doesn't matter. Maybe everyone was sloppy that you mentioned which is why I don't have any of those groups/songs. Regardless I didn't like it. Was technology limited for his voice too? Because he sings in the same exact way he plays guitar it was clearly intentional. The Beatles weren't sloppy. I have them to compare to. You think if Brian May were to do this song in 1998 with the same technology Jimi had that it wouldn't sound similar to what it does here?
@Typhoon792 Of course reason doesn't matter to you...you don' use any.
Without Hendrix May's style wouldn't exist! He would readily admit it. He even got layering from Hendrix. Studio version of Star Spangled Banner has 60 layered guitar tracks. Nobody else had done anything like it. May improved expended on the idea with Queen. That's how progress works.
May: "I really thought I was pretty good before I saw Hendrix, and then I thought: Yeah, not so good."
@IYAMNI Wow. You just fucking repeated the same thing third time in a row. And I said the reasoning doesn't matter in the sense that I then mentioned after. I'm sorry but talking to you is like to a moron.
How does that fucking change anything? Hendrix didn't fucking make up Brian May. I'm sure he would absolutely fucking disagree with you that he'd be a brainless idiot that wouldn't be able to do shit if Hendrix didn't exist. Brian May's creativity and skills would not be limited.
@Typhoon792 Brian May's style was totally inspired by Hendrix. He'd be playing either way, but not that way. If you had have the clue you like to pretend, you'd know that. And that's no dis to May. He took it to the next level and inspired another generation of players. That's how it works. Inspiration creates style and then you inspired those who follow. Call me whatever you want, I always consider the source. Thou art without clue. Freakin Borg.
@IYAMNI That doesn't make you noble. Maybe if you had actually expressed more than two ideas in all these comments... This might as well have been your first word. "JIMI HENDRIX FTW. BYE!" ... Look, if it weren't for Hendrix, it would've been someone else in that time. May has clearly had some Hendrix inspired stuff like maybe, THIS COVER SONG? But if it weren't for that stuff, it would be something else. There is so much variety in his composed songs (if you actually listened to Queen).
Yo, Typoser... I had Queens first album on release day. We kicked back with a bong and let it roll it three times in a row, blown away. Had the Queen 2 on release day and that was even more amazing. Sheer Heart Attack was a let down by comparison and most of us hated Bohemian Rhapsody because it was so fking commercial. Our band played 2 songs off Sheer Heart Attack.
I repeat, you are without clue. But everyone can see that by now.
@IYAMNI All you do is say random shit and repeat, repeat, repeat. I have to go in detail about every little bit? in regards to the quote, yes, he's giving props to his inspiration. If I were ever to make it anywhere, I would always say something EVEN FURTHER like "I could never be as good as Queen" or "Brian May" or whatever...
And now, you just showed you have no clue if you wanna play it this way. When Bohemian Rhapsody was released, it was the exact opposite of "commercial".
@Typhoon792 "It was the exact opposite of "commercial".
OMG. You know nothing about Queen. Rhapsody is when they solidified themselves as a radio play band. Their biggest hit and one of the biggest of all time. First two were FM play only. And better. Production sucked by comparison, but it was raw and alive. Sheer Heart Attack was shifted towards radio play and had a couple of really clone style hits. But it wasn't until Rhapsody that Queen attracted the clones and posers... like you.
@IYAMNI Wow... My fucking point is, they had a hard time deciding whether to release it or not. I'm saying the song wasn't purposely intended to be "commercial" and they were surprised that people found a liking to it. Obviously they thought it was good, which it is, but I actually also stopped liking it too much after listening even a little bit to Queen. Again though, THAT"S NOT THE FUCKING POINT! Now we're going off topic. This is clearly pointless as you can't even comprehend the matter.
@Typhoon792 You're right. It's not going anywhere. But we had fun, no?
My point was that those who were following Queen from the first album thought Rhapsody was a sell out, though a really well done one. By the time Another One Bites The Dust came out, we all agreed ...another one had bitten the dust..
@Gregsynthbootlegs Lol, it's fine.. Unless they're completely dumb and practically type nothing but unrelated insults, I usually give the person a chance. This went a bit longer than it should have because he really wasn't giving me any solid arguments and for lack of a better description, was simply being annoying.
And my apologies go to rojemm20, though, maybe he expected related debates when posting this video XD
@Gregsynthbootlegs Honestly, the guy just didn't understand what he was saying nor what I was replying to. The guy can't see past the surface of any sort of discussion and what's sad is that it includes what he says.
@Typhoon792 The beatles weren't sloppy? So, you never heard a beatles song? But it isn't slop. More likely it's the fact that no one had noise gates then, no pro tools to clean up their messes. Everything bled. On technology, Jimi was a pioneer... one of the first to play with stereophonic and phasing effects in the studio. And as far as his voice, it's what made him Jimi.
Whatever. He's is one of the founding fathers. You don't have to like him, but your reasons are pretty weak.
@IYAMNI My reasons are weak? You gave me no reasons! You basically just said so far that he did this, he did that. I respect him for what he did and I said that, but I don't give a shit when it comes to music. No pro tools to clean up their messes? That's so fucking absurd that it's ridiculous. I know the difference between sloppy playing and sloppy amplification or whatever the fuck. His playing was sloppy, pure and simple. You either love it or hate it but the fact of the matter remains.
I'm very surprised! He did it his way but never left anything out from the song structure..It has little bit of the high heel boots leather pants sound to it..He must have really liked the song..
seeeeeeeeee...a veces los covers no son buenos pero a mi me gusta mas con BRIAN que con hendrix...respetando obvio su autoria pero BRIAN ES BRYAN ;) ahhh que solo!!!
