i go by 4;3 and zoom it in and only loose a tiny bit of top or bottom and adjust to what ever game im playing eg power bar at top or bottom just use option to move zoom another thing i find helps is to turn the sharpness all the way down and turn of any enhancement options as this is what can cause any lag (also true for modern games to all be it by milli secounds) the only problem i have is buzzing on the nes but can be toned down by playing with sound options
I have a Samsung 46in HDTV, and am trying to find the best way to hook up my NES and SNES to it. Are there any adaptors on the market to convert the signals
Thanks for answering all my questions in an informative and entertaining video, rather than just spewing out another one of those 10-second "this is how bad it looks" pieces of YouTube poop!
all my old game consoles from pong / Atari 2600 / Nintendo / Sega / Etc work fine on my Panasonic LCD 1080P TV either through scart / composite / RF, i have a new Panasonic Plasma & i have problems through RF, turns in fine but i get interference LINES / Pulsing on the sound? is there a fix?
@doubledragonuk To me it sounds like the tuner in the new TV doesn't like old analog signals much. I'd try hooking the RF to a VCR and then outputting composite or s-video from the VCR to the new TV.
@MrGameSack i used a VCR today & works fine, i found a post online saying the RF Modulator in old Electronics dosent tune in well with modern TV`s 1990`s Electronic stuff seems OK, shame the modern TV`s dont have twin tuners
@MrGameSack Well, for Component you can use converters. Or the Sega-16 way: melt your brain modding your systems with a video encoder capable of outputting Component out of RGB.
@SNESFanboy64 I think you can modify the SNES 2 for s-video. The SNES 1 supports it natively. Since you are a fanboy of the SNES I assume you have both models so use the first model. :)
@MrGameSack What's weird is that composite on my SNES 2 looks better than it does on the original. It almost looks like S video. The contrast is better, the colors are better, the brightness is higher, the resolution is far cleaner. So I hooked it up on my Samsung LCD HDTV and it looks rather good. Except for the strips and momentary 1/3 of a second flicker.
@SNESFanboy64 I've seen that weird, random flicker on some LCD TVs, but it usually happens on the Genesis. Something about how the TV is having a hard time interpreting the video signal.
A thought: Obviously you guys covered the extremes for TV's; but I was wondering if you've tried playing with an LCD SDTV or EDTV. They shouldn't have to do any upscaling, right? I suspect there would still be image lag, but I have no experience with EDTVs at all.
Our house got rid of all of our CRT TVs years ago, but I've finally gotten sick of how bad even PS2 games look on the HDTVs; so I've been exploring different SDTV options and just wanted an opinion on this.
@archaeapyric They would still have to deinterlace. It's hard to say how it would look, but I'm sure it wouldn't look as good as a CRT for pre-Dreamcast systems. Light gun compatibility would also remain broken.
@MeatMaggot That's must be why they always called me "beast" in high school. Hopefully no one remembers that awful Beauty and the Beast TV show with Ron. But I think I look more like one of the Geico cavemen or something. :)
Great episode. Kudos to you for knowing about the RGB Scart to Component converter. I personally use an RGB Scart cable (with a Scart (Euro pinout) to RGB (Japan pinout) converter cable) with an XRGB-2plus upscan unit - all plugged into an old CRT VGA monitor. It looks glorious. It's not a huge display, but at 21" (19" viewable), it's not too bad. Unfortunately, I can't even try my XRGB-2plus with my Sharp Aquos HD set (the Sharp doesn't recognize the resolution).
@DemonPizzaBoy0 Hey joe and dave this is Thadius Goodson, Son of Baltur Goodson lord of the Three Shires. I found these videos...on youtube. Good day.
Nice video, as usual! You're right about retro games looking terrible when the aspect ratio is changed from 4:3 to 16:9. It's amazing how much CRT's have fallen in price! Props to Jennifer for some great camera work! :) LOL @ disclaimer! I actually own a Toshiba CRT SDTV and I must say, the picture quality is great for retro games! It even has a component input.
@johnnyjohnson Yes, those Toshibas are awesome. If you get one larger than 32" (the 32" may also be included), the tube is made by a different manufacturer so I wouldn't recommend them with the same esteem.
@johnnyjohnson Are the Toshibas you mention using a flatter, more Trinitron-esque tube? I know some of the ones I used to sell back in the late 90s/early 00s were awfully round and had some icky distortion. I love Sony tubes because of the better geometry and the service menu is not all that difficult to navigate.
@ajgarman The more recent Toshibas are much flatter (mine appears to have no curve at all in either direction). There is no moire on dithered patterns like there are on some of the more recent Samsung and Sony tubes. Plus, the color is really vivid.
Moiré: I believe it would be accurate to pronounce it like "more eh" or "Moe Ray", the "oi" could be pronounced more like those in "noir" such as "pinot noir" (much as you pronounced it in the video), but the word will not generally come up in everyday conversation and most people won't know what you're talking about or refer to it as "that damned headache inducing pattern"
So how long have you guys been gay?

actually, the nes zapper doesnt work becuse of the lag on the hdtv's, not scanlines

@ Tiido Priimagi wouldn´t care for it, nor would I. That´s we´ve got several spare consoles. The encoder would only be appliable to Sega consoles.
