Dave could have sent the first rocket to the moomn if that's where his interests were. Notice he had the first headless guitar with tuners at the bridge. He also invented the fulcrum tremolo. Never interested much in business, he neglected to defend his patents over the years. Dave is still making and playing his guitars in Washington state.
Harvey Mandel was the guitarist who popularized tapping in ROCK music prior to Eddie Van Halen. That does not diminish EVH's importance. Mandel never took credit for beginning the technique. He said, in an interview in Guitar Player magazine in the early 70s, that he had heard others doing the technique. EVH has always said that he saw Harvey Mandel doing the technique first. Check out Mandel's recording Shangrenade from the early 70s...great record and filled with tapping.
... guitarists have been tapping strings (either intentionally or inadvertently) since the advent of fretted instruments. However, Edward is the only guitarist to have widely *popularized* the technique in Rock... not to mention recorded the most famous example of it with 'Eruption'.
No, he invented a new way to tap with the right hand lining up with the frets. This guy's lining the right hand up with the strings. That's the difference. If you search under "Emmett Chapman" online you'll find several sites that describe this difference.
If you search under "Evolution of a Musical Art" you'll find an article from 1987 where Emmett writes about the differences, specifically. He originally thought he had invented it in 1969, because he didn't know about DeArmond, who is the first known amplified two-handed tapper, and those who came after him.
Leo Fender also built a tap guitar prototype in the 1950s. Very cool video! I can't believe touch-style has taken this long to really become mainstream. I guess some change is slow. It really is the next evolution in playing stringed instruments. I know I love my Warr guitar!
Heh I just don't see it. Personally even though I know how much talent and how cool it is, I often tired of it and it often comes out sounding so jumbled on just one guitar.
Lots of touch-style players have blown my mind with technique and ability but there is only a small amount of actual music from it that makes it into my listening rotation.
Stanley Jordan does make the cut more often than any. :D
Amazing Guitar! too bad not many people know about this kind of guitar yet, but this really inspires me and others to experiment more with music.

Dude this person has been tapping LONG before Van Halen was born!
Narrow-minded Van Halen worshippers beware! THIS IS PROOF THAT VAN HALEN IS _NOT_ THE FIRST TAPPER!
