  • this band knocked me out when i was playing in baby garage bands in 1969. later, i played in countless bands just like motherlode. back in the supper club and show band days. shag haircuts and finding ways to rev up the leslie. those were the days.

  • Takes me back to the summer of '69. What a great song and fantastic Canadian group.

  • Another great Canadian band!!! And I'm from the US.

  • here is the entire ORIGINAL album ( not digitally remastered, but the ORIGINAL vinyl sound copy) on this channel.... themotherlodealbum1969 ......? check it? out and enjoy :)

  • Man, they are groovin'!! I recently stumbled upon the album version of this song and I loved it!! Then I checked out this live performance and it makes me so happy and proud that just about everyone can appreciate a soulful sound. I see this vid was posted in 2008, but I'm still glad that those guys were still out doing their thing!! Thanks Motherlode for some great music!!!

  • Wow! They still sound the same!

  • It's hard to tell whether I'm more impressed by how good they sound or that they're still together, either way I'm elated!

  • Yes... I am a somewhat "soul music historian," and this is definitely one

of the finest SOUL songs ever... One-hit-wonder that it was. I had been

looking for this for years... decades. I turned 13 the year this song was

released. I thought for sure it was a group along the lines of those that

evolved from the 1960s to the 1970s such as Olympics, the Mad

Lads, the Manhattans, the Dells, the Spinners, the O'Jays, the Intruders,

the Originals, and all of them.... Surprise! ~ò,,ó~

  • I saw Lighthouse in kitchener a month ago and was so impressed that they brought in Steve Kennedy. What a great addition! Our Canadian talent rocks!! What a great show.!!Put more of this music on the Canadian airways you dickheads!!

  • Picked up this gem the other day. Great band.

  • Great tune and well played. I just saw Steve Kennedy perform with Lighthouse....another great Canadian band!!!! Awesome!

  • OMG I thought they were black! Freaky!

  • WOWWW!!!! A great live performance. I haven't heard this song in years. What a time machine. Come on South Florida radio. Play more of these type of songs on the oldies station. They really lack the dynamics of playing a wide selection of oldies in this market.

  • Wow.....great song and they sound just as good as ever thanks for posting this it is a treasure....

  • The original bass was on guitar, which was performed by carol kaye!

  • A-STOUND-ing, that they can perform one of THE greatest soul songs ever recorded as if it were 41 years ago.....jaw-droppingly good! You think ya might find your way back down across the border, guys? To Mohegan Sun on an oldies package tour or something?

  • The original bass part is done on a B3!

  • I still have the album,I first thought they were American back then because they were so good .The quality of the recording is amazing . Where did all of the beautiful horns go today?

  • I remember this song from junior high. I always thought the group was black.

  • Love it, Love it, Love it. There's a helluva lot of soul going on here. Reminds me of Ft. Wainwwright, AK. Yr. 1969 6th Bn 9th Infantry (Manchu) 171st Inf. Mechanized. This is a great video and live performance sounds like the original. Good job and thanks for posting.

  • WOW, I'm blown away, You really nailed it....perfect

  • WOW. I am trippin' in the best way. Thanks for this post.

  • Call it what you want, but don't call it MOTHERLODE. Without William "Smitty" Smith singing and playing organ, IT IS NOT MOTHERLODE, but a pale simulation.

  • Fine performance of a great old tune-I saw them twice back in the day-they were a standout in every way.

  • carole kaye played bass

  • wow..such fond memories this song holds..

  • This is one of my favorite songs ever. Sudbury boy here. Love you all. When I die. Gotta love good Canadian music.

  • Excellent find!!! Sounds as good as the original record if not better!!!!

  • Boy! Do I remember that song and group. Amazingly they sounded very much like they did when they originally recorded "When I Die".

Thanks Jakebunnymusic for sharing this memory.

  • There's quite a bit of soul going on in here. Sounds fantastic. BTW when are they going to team up with Eric Mercury ?

  • A nice change from Trooper.

  • they were a lot like The Magnificent Men (out of york PA)...a bunch of white guys who sounded blacker than most black groups. still one of the best songs of the last 40 years in contemporary music.

  • j dilla - donuts (intro)

  • Outstanding! Just as good as the record.

  • They are black. They just have white skin.

One of the original members was the late William (Smitty) Smith on organ and vocals. He had black skin.

  • Bernie LaBarge on guitar, Lou Pomanti on Hammond B-3, Peter Cardinali on bass, Paul DeLong on drums, Steve Kennedy on sax/vocals, Neil Donell on vocals.

  • Fantastic, that's what I was looking for Berniedexter. Bass player just the best, guitar the best, drums the best, B3 awesome, Sax vocals the best.. I have loved this song and your talent from the first time I heard the song back in the day. Love you guys. So talented. The Music Business sucks big time. Y'all deserve much more than they gave you.

  • i always thought they were black.

  • Damn your not alone on that one...

  • lol.

  • Me too... !!! I had this on one of those K-Tel "hits" records in the 70's.... They remind me of The Spinners or groups like that. I always loved the vocals, guitar and organ mix... nice tune guys and nice to know the guys are a Canadian band....

  • I was also sh*t shocked to learn they were predominantly white AND Canadian. All these years!!! :-)

  • Beautiful live rendition.... wasn't there once a black member of Motherlode?

  • yes, there was, but i'm not sure what happened to him.

  • May 15, 2008 at Palais Royale Ballroom

    Tribute to Domenic Troiano to

raise funds for Toronto East General Hospital!

    Song still gives me chills

  • was always a great song. when was this video made?
