My older brother John and I were watching the news about controversy over the burning of the flag. John turned to our dad and said, "anyone who disgraces our flag should be thrown in prison". I've never seen my dad so livid-- he turned off the TV, stood up and walked over to John. "I fought in two wars and eight battles for our freedom-- freedom to say what we want, freedom to do what we want." And then he left the room- I will never forget those words.

I never new this about my grandfather and everytime I would see him he would smile at me and teach me how to play a certain sport or game. Because of him I have been able to play sports now. Thanks grandpa.

All though millions of people die to protect America, my cousin being one of them. Cpl. Scott. J. Procopio. 3/8 Kilo, KIA Ra-Madi Iraq, April 2 2005. They died to protect free speech. He went on to be the first grandmaster of any masonic lodge in America who was a Jew. He built homes all around his town for people who couldnt afford to have one built. He died when i was young from lung cancer caused by the war. but most importantly he loved his country and God and had lived a meaningful life.

" Unless you are a land grabbing Empire as of old (Persia, Rome, Britain, Turks, pre-1900 USA)"
idiot, persian empire:
. It is noted in western history, for emancipation of slaves including the Jewish people from their Babylonian captivity, and for instituting infrastructures such as a postal system, road systems, and the usage of an official language throughout its territories.
@minderbart1 And just exactly how did they get those territories? I am quite sure they held referenda to make sure the people in those territories wanted to be in the Persia Empire. They asked nicely and were never land grabbers, right idiot?
The enduring Roman influence is reflected pervasively in contemporary language, literature, legal codes, government, architecture, engineering, medicine, sports, arts, etc. Much of it is so deeply inbedded that we barely notice our debt to ancient Rome.
@minderbart1@minderbart1 As for the Romans, you really don't want me to dust off my history degree & start on the land grabbing they did. I will just settle for mentioning that the Celts were existing nicely with their own thriving language, culture, etc in what is now France, Spain, Portugal, England, & parts of the Balkans when the Romans decided the Celts would make good Roman peons & arena entertainment. Pervasive contemporary influence is what happens when land grabbing empires win.
@minderbart1 Nothing in my comment suggested the was NOTHING else behind those civilizations but land grabbing. Every empire, even one as minimalliy impacting, historically, as the Mongols brings something out of it. Nor did I suggest the US only brings peace. @byager24 no i'm not, between that time and the Korean war, he won many medals and was promoted quite fast up the ranks. and during World war II he was even awarded the Victoria Cross and a few others medals from that time in the air force and before as well a few medals for his service in Korea.
like i said before, i'm not confused, but i would love to know what he earned those medals for, but no one in the family knows anymore cause he always was quiet when he came back. :/
@Shauny7188 If he was awarded the Victoria Cross (the highest award for valour in the face of the enemy for UK/Canada/Aus) you will be able to search for his medal citiation which will give you an account of the events concerning the award of his VC. Amongst other things, it will tell you his rank at the time of the event. You will also be able to apply for his service records which will tell you where we went, training he did, medals awarded, ranks promoted, etc. Hope that helps.
@JayshincoLee How in the hell am I disrespecting him or his grandfather? I'm merely questioning his assertion that his grandfather went from a ball turret gunner (a dangerous and badass job, but not one that an officer would hold) to a friggin GENERAL in six years. It's literally impossible, and if he really wants to find out the truth about who his grandfather is and what he did he would do well to start by eliminating what sounds like a family myth
@Shauny7188 I really do think you are mistaken, Ball Turret Gunners were usually enlisted men, usually around the rank of an E-5 or E-6 (Sgt. or S/Sgt. for Americans) and to have gone from Enlisted to Officer wasnt hard during WW2, but a lot of times they revertted back to their enlisted rank after WW2. Now say he was commissioned during the war, it probably would have been mid to tail end, lets say 44-45ish he was commissioned. It still doesnt add up (to be continued)
@Shauny7188 (Part II) So lets say he is commissioned at the end of WW2. He is now a 2nd Lieutenant (I'm going by American rank cause that is what I know, concept is still the same) After WW2 all of the allied armies downsized in great numbers, those that remained were career soldiers. At this point the officer pool would have been very small and very competitive for promotion, so for your Grandfather to have gone from Enlisted to a General in just under 10 years in the 20th Century is impossible
@thetruecardigankid maybe you are right, but when i was told this i was 12 (now i'm 23) but i'm sure i heard victoria in there or a cross(again this is 11 years ago), but i do know that he commanded troops and went into the korean war himself.
but none the less, i will check into it. but i'm currently not able to easily access his war records right now. but i am very happy for veterns like him and as well others who have served their contries.
Dont be lier kid. It is so easy to check all VC recepients. Only few men were so lucky to be awarded by this highest medal. There isnt any man who would fought in WWII and Korea...
oh a wee lad i was. but i do remember seeing my great-grandfather buried in our lord's soil. He served in WWII and Korea under the 56th Airborne. RIP Leroy Carter. you will be missed.
@nickajt1980 all I can say is thanks and I understand your anger but you do realize you shouldnt waste you time argueing with people who won't listen I have been in an IED attack and I for one don't want to remember it and I don't want to for get
Sparkle987- you should be very proud.... If more people were like your father this world would be a much better place... You don't know me but please believe me when I say as far as "heros" go every one on this message board could truly learn a thing or two from your dad
@nickajt1980 My entire childhood my father was in the military, I rarely saw him and spent my life fearing that the next time I saw him, he would be in a coffin. He joined when he was sixteen and spent thirty years serving our country. His whole life revolved around the military- but he would always be the first to say that no matter where you stood on a stance, whether you loved war or hated it, you should be able to say it. He spent his life making sure we had or freedom of speech.
the single way to avoid war si getting control over all ecenomical branches of the world and put them under the command of a very intelligent and equilibrated person...but such intelligence is not reserver by any other than god (i don't belive in him so i don't write the name with big characters)...so...u either live with war and not like it,or live with it and like it...it's the same shit, just your mood changes from one case to another......
@LastChanceMarie haha cant argue with opinions, its not that i dont like flatfoot 56, i just always thought he kinda sounded like he was trying to be al barr.
centuriontaxi: Going into a meaningless war which is not even close to your country voluntarily (while you have a lot other chances to live your life) is not a definition of being a man. Killing fathers in their own homes on their own lands ripping apart families, accidentaly killing children etc is not really manly. I know a lot of people from lots of countries, and you know what? They are like me. Just wanna live their lives.
@funnyfiu your a wimp. people like you when called to defend there country run and hide behind there mum. you wanna join up mate and be a man. go on join see the world and see its not a nice place.
i just signed with the navy. and i personally think anyone who dislikes this song or what nickajt1980 has to say is a fucking faggot. this is the absolutely, positively best song in the mother loving world. i am glad i am part of this country and i hate all of you who are not glad to live in freedom or have people like nickajt1980 fighting for it whether or not he is fighting for the people next him or his country. he is defending someones freedom by shooting the fucks trying to take it. America
@Potts132 That statement COULD haunt you later in the back when someone else IS willing to take your life for WHATever reason. And stress situation combined with the urge to survive will make you think otherwise at that moment.
one of my best friends past and they also played this song at his service. RIP MORGAN HUTCHENS you were a great man and a best friend. live on my brother live on.
I was in 10th Mountain Light Infantry Division in the US Army for a year and a half before leaving for West Point. two of my squadmates died last week when their humvee ran over an IED. RIP Zach Lynch and Wes Hall. Miss you guys.
I am a soldier, I have been to Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo and Northern Ireland. I don't fight for my country, my God or anything else. I fight for the man next to me, when the bullets are flying politics and all that shit go out the window, you don't care why you are there, you care for your brothers and sisters next to you..... Thank you for those who support us, for those of you who don't, pick up a fucking rifle and stand in line otherwise shut the fuck up.....
@jackaloopa Hey my dad was D-DAY Royal Welch Fusiliers so I give you and your dad respect . There all sat by god talking about the good times. And we will all meet again .
@jackaloopa Sorry to jump into your conversation. My Grandfather died last year. He was a United States Marine who was also on Iwo Jima and saw the Flag raising as well.
@HatersGonnaHate1000 If you listen to the speech (which I have only just seen) it's completely different to what I said. But what he has said is right, to those who don't know you can't explain it, to those who have experienced it you don't have to, have you ever seen a mate die in combat? have you ever been shot at? have you ever been in an IED strike?
@HatersGonnaHate1000 You really are an ignorant prick, I'm not trying to win an argument, I'm just trying to explain that you can't explain it to people (like you and I'm not trying to be detrimental here) who don't know what it is like to be on the front line of combat. People here read the papers and watch the news not knowing what it is truely like, I'm not saying all I have seen is combat all my life, all I am saying is please people open your eyes and see life isn't all roses...
@nickajt1980 Whatever dude, Soldiers I know come back different. None of them ever reccomend anyone to go off to war. And you seem to view those who do not want to fight as second class citizens. Also I dont believe a soldier would preach about their opinions online. Real soldiers have a quiet grace about them which i repect more than anything in the world. Im sorry but I dont believe you have ever seen combat. I think you are a little kid who thinks he knows what war is because he plays games.
@HatersGonnaHate1000 Interesting!!! To be honest pal I really don't give a shit about your opinion either. I'm making an assumption now, that you're American, I may be wrong. You think what you want to think, you believe what you want to believe, I don't need to prove myself to you or anyone else. Oh and not all soldiers come back different most of the guys I know are the same as before they left.
@nickajt1980 Nope Britsh. And you say you have nothing to prove yet in your original comment you claimed that people like me should "grab a rifle and stand in line", almost esculating yourself above "people like me" I think we both know your not a soldier. Just some bullshiting idiot seeking approvel of those who enjoy dropkicick murpheys. My cousen went off to war, saw a lot of people. Im not going into further detail because of my repsct for him. But ive seen first hand the effect war has
@nickajt1980 My brother, grandfather and uncle have all fought as marine's as i plan to as soon as i finish high school your a good man keep fighting for the right reasons
Have you been forced to fight in Iraq etc.? No? So you have to handle with it that not everybody is with you. It´s your problem. War is shit. And that wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are even more than that.
Have you been forced to fight in Iraq etc.? No? So you have to handle with it that not everybody is with you. It´s your problem. War is shit. And that wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are even more than that.
@nickajt1980 i'm not stupid enough to join the army. soldiers are the bottom rung of the educational system. why the fuck would anyone pick up a rifle instead of picking up a decent wage. heroes my arse. anyone who fought hitler deserves credit. you're fighting the greedy man's war! so stand in line and shut the fuck up........
@bipedalame who the fucking hell do you think you are? you fucking ignorant thinking everything is about the paycheck you take home? without a fucking hero like our soilders we would not even be sitting where we are today, and you would not have the fucking job you think is so damn inportant. show your comment to any TRUE american and you would die in a hearbeat. and no one would give a fuck about you
@bipedalame I dare you to say that to my face or any other soldier's face. You would have every contingent's bullet and nation so far up where the sun don't wanna shine you'll be sad you insulted the men and women who died for the very freedom which you abuse and laugh at today. The very freedom which is allowing you to troll and insult honoured members who gave their lives for hope of defining the word freedom to a nation one day. Congratulations. Stand down now.
@nickajt1980 Well said M8. To be honest i'm a republican and wholly for the cause but ah'll say this m8. hats off to ye. Ye shouldnnae have been put therre in the first place among them fuckin cloth heads

JayshincoLee 5 months ago
@JayshincoLee How in the hell am I disrespecting him or his grandfather? I'm merely questioning his assertion that his grandfather went from a ball turret gunner (a dangerous and badass job, but not one that an officer would hold) to a friggin GENERAL in six years. It's literally impossible, and if he really wants to find out the truth about who his grandfather is and what he did he would do well to start by eliminating what sounds like a family myth
byager24 5 months ago
@byager24 hmm... ok. i kinda feel like a dick now too haha
JayshincoLee 5 months ago
@Shauny7188 I really do think you are mistaken, Ball Turret Gunners were usually enlisted men, usually around the rank of an E-5 or E-6 (Sgt. or S/Sgt. for Americans) and to have gone from Enlisted to Officer wasnt hard during WW2, but a lot of times they revertted back to their enlisted rank after WW2. Now say he was commissioned during the war, it probably would have been mid to tail end, lets say 44-45ish he was commissioned. It still doesnt add up (to be continued)
thetruecardigankid 4 months ago
@Shauny7188 (Part II) So lets say he is commissioned at the end of WW2. He is now a 2nd Lieutenant (I'm going by American rank cause that is what I know, concept is still the same) After WW2 all of the allied armies downsized in great numbers, those that remained were career soldiers. At this point the officer pool would have been very small and very competitive for promotion, so for your Grandfather to have gone from Enlisted to a General in just under 10 years in the 20th Century is impossible
thetruecardigankid 4 months ago
@thetruecardigankid maybe you are right, but when i was told this i was 12 (now i'm 23) but i'm sure i heard victoria in there or a cross(again this is 11 years ago), but i do know that he commanded troops and went into the korean war himself.
but none the less, i will check into it. but i'm currently not able to easily access his war records right now. but i am very happy for veterns like him and as well others who have served their contries.

RIP dad.

the single way to avoid war si getting control over all ecenomical branches of the world and put them under the command of a very intelligent and equilibrated person...but such intelligence is not reserver by any other than god (i don't belive in him so i don't write the name with big characters)...so...u either live with war and not like it,or live with it and like it...it's the same shit, just your mood changes from one case to another......

centuriontaxi: Going into a meaningless war which is not even close to your country voluntarily (while you have a lot other chances to live your life) is not a definition of being a man. Killing fathers in their own homes on their own lands ripping apart families, accidentaly killing children etc is not really manly. I know a lot of people from lots of countries, and you know what? They are like me. Just wanna live their lives.

@HatersGonnaHate1000 If you listen to the speech (which I have only just seen) it's completely different to what I said. But what he has said is right, to those who don't know you can't explain it, to those who have experienced it you don't have to, have you ever seen a mate die in combat? have you ever been shot at? have you ever been in an IED strike?
nickajt1980 7 months ago
@nickajt1980 No, and i highly doubt you have. A Soldier wouldnt use their dead friend to win an argument.
HatersGonnaHate1000 7 months ago
@HatersGonnaHate1000 You really are an ignorant prick, I'm not trying to win an argument, I'm just trying to explain that you can't explain it to people (like you and I'm not trying to be detrimental here) who don't know what it is like to be on the front line of combat. People here read the papers and watch the news not knowing what it is truely like, I'm not saying all I have seen is combat all my life, all I am saying is please people open your eyes and see life isn't all roses...
nickajt1980 7 months ago
@nickajt1980 Whatever dude, Soldiers I know come back different. None of them ever reccomend anyone to go off to war. And you seem to view those who do not want to fight as second class citizens. Also I dont believe a soldier would preach about their opinions online. Real soldiers have a quiet grace about them which i repect more than anything in the world. Im sorry but I dont believe you have ever seen combat. I think you are a little kid who thinks he knows what war is because he plays games.
HatersGonnaHate1000 7 months ago
@HatersGonnaHate1000 Interesting!!! To be honest pal I really don't give a shit about your opinion either. I'm making an assumption now, that you're American, I may be wrong. You think what you want to think, you believe what you want to believe, I don't need to prove myself to you or anyone else. Oh and not all soldiers come back different most of the guys I know are the same as before they left.
nickajt1980 7 months ago
@nickajt1980 Nope Britsh. And you say you have nothing to prove yet in your original comment you claimed that people like me should "grab a rifle and stand in line", almost esculating yourself above "people like me" I think we both know your not a soldier. Just some bullshiting idiot seeking approvel of those who enjoy dropkicick murpheys. My cousen went off to war, saw a lot of people. Im not going into further detail because of my repsct for him.
