Yes, he did. You know what else lacks subtlety? Terminator 2 but it's awesome. A heavyweight boxing match also lacks subtlety, and can be very good. 90% of metal lacks subtlety, and well, some of it is pretty good.

I usually hate it when people f@*k with brilliance, which I feel GoT is.... but I gotta say, this works. It doesn't mess with the song more than it should, just "updates" it. I agree with one of the other commenters that it doesn't really work for the period of the show... but definitely captures the grit of the series. I enjoy it... it pairs nicely with the actual intro.

The original score is great. The "remixed" version is awesome. But I don't think this improves the opening credits, because the original score kept it more in the "period," this takes it to somewhere completely different.
