  • Weltklasse Song!!!

  • The Song is not Written by Shane MCGowan and The Pogues but by Phil Chevron

  • i hate to be drunk. why do i do it all over again? well its not to be drunk its the bad feeling after it. i don#t understand why i#m doing it.

  • In my opinion there have been only two European bands "living their music on stage": The Pogues and "Hubert von Goisern & die Alpinkatzen".

  • This song, written by Chevron and sung by Shane, makes my blood sing.

  • Good ol' man - even today his heart isnt "Soaked" his mind may be - but not that heart of his.

  • jesus it starts toothake just from watch the video...

  • I actually like the way they have Phil Chevron singing it now better... ( I wish there was a quality live version on youtube.) which in no way takes takes away from my acknowledging Shane as the supreme Pogue and best songwriter and all that goes with it. so say we all.

  • This song is one of the greatest ever

  • Philip Chevron WROTE THIS! :)

  • @nippegmt Fair play. But Shane owns it.

  • A unique gang of lads some great songs both words and music . Who else comes close who else does or did such different performances with all included for the price.

  • Great performance, but I would like to tell him: Shane, I know a good dentist, very cheap one!!! Come on.....

  • @giannimeda: he's had new teeth for some time now.

  • @PooPoo2U there gone again :L

  • @rockst4rFTW: He got new teeth like 2 years ago.

  • @PooPoo2U yeah ino :P but the front ones came ou again :L I dont wanna get in a discussion about his teeth though, im here to see talent, which he is full of :)

  • its not theiving to cover an odd clancy bros or dubliners song as they are close friends and all under my irish banner

  • not their songs? Shane is great man, he has taken many songs and given them his interpretation. Please tell me what song Shane has written, dont mention fairy tale...not him........

  • @polmaccaba

streams of whiskey , boys from county hell, sunny side of the street. are my favs written by him

  • every time i hear this i think of my dad and mom coming to america and the family they left behind...never forget lads, never forget

  • @misteromeara

    Nice

  • Great song. I agree, Shane is a magic writer. Philip Chevron actually wrote this though

  • Remember on Béda !

  • Philip Chevron, the guitarist, actually penned this tune.

  • @jphelan001 And these days, he's the one who sings it at their concert.s.

  • Shane McGowan for prime minister...he'd do a better job

    Freedom

  • @1976steviebhoy there is no such thing as freedom even in "free" countries its really just an illusion everybodys way too controlled to see whats happening

  • @alchoholic20

Yeah, we're as free as we're allowed to be.

  • im 13 now, my father used to play irish rover and pogues songs when i was about 5 and i used to dance about to them, love the pogues always will, the new music is aload of ballucks..

    long live shane (:

  • Shane didn't write this I think the flute player Spider wrote it.

  • great song... even if those few bars make me think of "frosty the snowman"

  • Then we raised a glass to the pogues

    And a dozen more besides....

tonight I'm drinking for mr Shane

  • I think Shane just proved people wrong there when he finished the London Marathon

  • who's the guy singing with Shane? He's got a good voice

  • @porsche911girl thats joe strummer, from the clash.

  • thanks to my son for getting me hooked on the Pogues

  • great song great vid. cheers

  • One final song for St. Patrick's Day.

  • The words on this song are relevant again "Thousands are sailing again across the ocean", Pogues, what a band!

  • I'm eating a block of cheese the size of a car battery.

  • That is just excellent.

  • I have been a fan of the Pogues since the mid-80s and I have always thought that Shane MacGowan is one of the best songwriters of all time - but then it is a funny coincidence that my favourite Pogues-song (which is this one) is written by Phil Chevron. Goes to show you that there were more great songwriters in the Pogues than good ol' Shane.

  • Isn't it an old folk tune, or based on one?

  • This song makes me dance like a madwoman.

  • shane looks fairly sober...

  • Ah the Pogues live, with Shane, the best thing in the world for making you happy and sometiems makin you cry at the same time!!

  • It's occured to me that lot of the stuff that the Pogues sing is old school covers, but that makes them no different from your average modern pop star, they've made these songs great, and the Irish are thieves anyways

    (just kidding, I am Irish)

  • Wow, Phil's got a really great voice.

  • Ah, what the hell. Let everyone say what they want. They just don't know what they're missing.

    God bless Shane

  • whoever ever questions shane's supreme authority is a bloody fool

  • Shane McGowan might possibly be the best songwriter ever.

  • actually Phil wrote this song

  • He didn't write this one though! Chevron did

  • thats true when i went to see them in sheffield in december he sang it all

  • @harpozeppo When it comes to lyrics Shane and Leonard Cohen are probably the best.

  • @111oooo yes! yes! yes! ( nick cave is also not too bad..)

  • @harpozeppo wot do u mean "might ".???....he is without doubt th greatest of all time :)))

  • @harpozeppo absolutely agree

  • I Agree, but he didn't write that song

  • @harpozeppo And he is possible the most ugly bastard ever ;)

  • @harpozeppo

Shane didn't write this. But yeah, he is amazing.

  • @harpozeppo

Yeah but this one was written by Phil Chevron

  • @harpozeppo he didn't write this song

  • @harpozeppo Philip Chevron wrote this song, but your statement is true none the less!

  • @harpozeppo Ironic, this song was completely written by Phil Chevron, Shane had nothing to do with it.

  • @harpozeppo he is, but he didn't write this! Philip Chevron did

  • @harpozeppo I feel like I should dislike this comment for the word "might". Haha... I won't. But I agree... He walks in large company and needs to make no introductions.

  • @harpozeppo Agreed, although not exactly in evidence in this video. This song was entirely written by Philip Chevron. Credit where credit is due!

  • pair of cailins class song

  • Oh Lord the Teeth!

  • nasty man...

  • This is a very good modern-era folk song about the experience of migrants. In this instance it relates to the Irish in America, but the more general themes- lonelyness, ambition, homesickness and cultural roots and lack of established family connections are common experiences for many migrants.

  • The Pogues is Ireland

    and Ireland is The Pogues!!

  • amazinggg

  • shane rules what a rob roy in modern times. what would be the the usa without great irish and german guys ??

  • i seen the pogues 3 times and every time it got better i met shane and had a few beers with him what a top man....i had a mega hangover the next day tho....lol

  • best band ever...

  • AMEN

  • I was born about a half a month after this was filmed.. lol

  • poor mcgowan he is the best. I hope he gets better. anxiety sux.

  • Joe Strummer、どこ に いるんだ?

  • ireland,...a great place since we shipped of all the morons to america :)

  • You mean, since they left because they were starving ? My ancestor chose to leave (was not shipped) during the Potato Famine.

  • you know america's the shit, soon as you smell us

  • you still have enough morons left who think nothing of killing each other.

  • Which part of the murderous commonwealth do you come from you fuck?

  • Australia Actually. And I think you need lessons in common decency "You Fuck"???Then again i have met many irish Laborours who were so ignorant about everything I began to suspect there were no schools in Ireland.

  • So you only associate only with labourers who were ignorant about everything. That's a broad spectrum. Australians by comparison are so cultured and worldly ? Your comments are derogative and insulting to all Irish. Not in the true spirit of a dinkum Aussie many of whom I respect..

  • Calm down cobber I was just gently takin the piss.I'm French Italian,Scottish and Irish myself.A proper mongrel.I get along with everyone. And there are not too many people who I have met that I couldnt get along with.(admittedly sometimes with a bit of effort )I have good mates who are Micks and they have been mates of mine for ever.

  • You wanna rip on a person for being a Tool, then fair enuff!!

You wanna rip on an entire nation because of it...then YOU'RE the Tool!!!

Common Decency??? Don't make me laugh..

  • Read from the top boofhead starting at

malarky321.I assume you understand the use of exclamation marks?I

  • Yip....just not that bothered to be honest!!! And no, i didn't read from the top...i just read your prejudice smart ass comment about the irish!! Just because you have yourself some "Mick" friends don't mean you didn't slander an entire country by your RIDICULOUS comment!! And BOOFHEAD????? Oh dear god...are you a kid???

  • Sigh.....No I'm not a kid and gee some people take themselves so seriously. The comment was meant to be a smart arsed comment in responce to laytruman...sigh again..........Be bothered if you are going to reply.

  • You really are one hell of a muppet!

And what exactly is it about ANYTHING i've wrote that would warrant "taking myself seriously"? I took YOU for what YOU said..

You might wanna think about re-phrasing that...

..and try not to point out my inaccurate use of the exclamation mark when you obviously can't spell for shite, its spelt response!

My God, a guy in his 40's pickin fights on youtube....go outside for a bit mate, get yourself a doughnut, get laid, masterbation's a good cure for boredom

  • You are a pedantic soul arent you? Bit sensitive as well .Sorry for the TYPO......I dont recall saying anything to you.I responded to someone who called ME a "fuck" so pull ya head in mate.

  • What?? That a turtle reference or something?? Maybe think about taking yours out...and thats out of your ass i mean..

    Tell ya what, you "win"....

i'm not interested in playing this game, people like yourself are the aggitators of the cyber-world!

So enjoy, and have a good long hard look at yourself...i'm sure u'll be just delighted with what u see!!

  • Sorry mate If I offended you.I was just mucking around no offence really intended.Sorry.:o(

  • Thats really sound, and appreciated...but in fairness i blew it up well out of proportion!!

So i apologize also, sorry mate

  • your an angry soul! chill the bean! your doing exactly what you say you hate!

  • Keep your nose out....you obviously didn't read it all

  • i read enough!

  • What's going on - how good is this song? I don't understand what you're all miffng about.

  • Brilliant

  • saw them for the first time in NYC on the 13th... and i have to say, not only the best show i've ever seen, but with Phil Chevron singing this, i almost cried

  • Yeah I had the pleasure of seeing them twice in 2006. One of which was in NYC on St. Patrick's day. They were both 2 of the greatest shows I've ever been too. And yes Phil's Thousands are Sailing vocal is amazing!

  • holy shit...look at the grill on that guy! lol!

  • What a tune!

  • omg, i looove this song :) its so good. lol. i like the lyrics too, they are quite meaningful, as most of his songs are, but yes i like this one.

  • steve lillywhite was married to kirsty mccoll....rip

  • I own this DVD, called "Live at the Town & Country Club 1988", during St. Patrick's Day Week. Shane seems to be a bit pissed on this record. It's still great, though.

  • Seconded!

  • Oops, once was enough...

  • Yeah, so everyone keeps telling me, I did correct myself after the mis-information offput everyone, by doing some research to found the truth and I'm very glad to find he's still alive.

I don't know how bad his throat cancer is, but wish him the best recovery possible. If anyone has any correct knowledge, I think everyone would be keen to hear it

  • according to the pogues website, phil is cancer free and back with the band :]

  • Scruttino, Phil is not dead!!

  • i seen phil with the pogues two years ago, alive and well, i read he does have throat cancer, but by all acounts still alive

  • I read in a street press, in the deaths section that he had passed away

Would be glad, to know he still going, great musician

  • i just looked it up, he's alive and receiving treatment. Hopefully he can have a full recovery and return to the pogues in the not to distant future

  • Phil is still alive, despite contrary rumours, always my favourite pogue, mainly because of this song, but he played a part in so many other songs.

  • Phil Chevron is NOT dead.

  • shane is the best, fuck the rest!greetings from croatia

  • I love this song...

  • I hope Phil is coming back soon back to The Pogues.

  • shane is a poet and a legend.....!!!!

  • A beautiful example of Philip Chevron's songwriting skills..Bless him..lets hope he will be back singing this live himself soon

  • The Pougues, e questa canzone in particolare, rappresentano per me il ricordo di uno dei più bei periodi della mia vita.

    See ya

    Ciao a tutti

  • ops scusa ho votato commento negativo...volevo mettere positivo..

  • Gr8 stuff! Phil Chevron, someone wanted to know about him. He was behind a legendary Dublin punk band the Radiators in the late 70s. Lisnin' to Shane and the songs lest we forget the bad times all those thousands who forced to sail away....Some didnt forget their Irishness & stayed proud of it.

  • i love this song, it doesn't matter how i feel about the song, I feel it relates to me though. I love shane, that is my dream to meet him one day! He might be a drunk, but at one time he was brilliant.

  • damn i love pogues, especially this song! chevron really is a great man... great skills, great voice, great performance... and apperantly great songwriter :D

one thing i dont get... why do so many ppl think it neccisary to piss at everyone that says a bad word bout the pogues, or even just makes a minor mistake? :S

  • Oh man...I thought Shane penned this. This is top notch writing,I want to know more about this Chevron guy.

  • The Pogues rock :) But shane is one ugly ****

  • WOT?!

  • fucking idiots you spout your bollox ,this song is about the mass exodus to america by our forefathers, dont read any more into it wanker

  • I fucking know! I talked to Anteanti. Who do you think I am? A fucking wannabe?

  • u can say cunt if u want mate! :)
