@uptoolate1896 You should be able to get one of those in the states. Just make sure you get the real deal from Japan as there are tons of fakes around.
Dang, Its obvious that is pretty soft wood, but you could hear how sharp that knife was! No its not a cleaver, its a special, multi-edge knife and silly sharp. It leaves a mark and a numb spot where ya cut yourself like any dang sharp knife, EEEUUUWWW. THX for post!
Wow,I used to have one of these falcons years ago as a child...had forgotten all about it until now. Thanks for taking the time to film the artisan at work!
@donepearce Well, the guy makes it through the whole video without injury, and cranks out a spiffy little carved bird in just a few minutes. Looks like stupid equals effective in this case.
@gayouj it freaks me out too. but i live in japan and have visited one of these craftsmen and these guys are just out of this world this is just a simple carving. i have seen phoenix made from a solid 20 cm large pillar using even bigger knives and when they do that in front of you you have cold sweat. one of the guys lost 3 toes he told me. i cant even picture how
@lukkha1 I have to imagine he dropped a knife on his foot. Even so, I'm with you. Lots of cool stuff coming out of that part of the world for thousands of years now.
it's a quality woodworking tool. You can't just buy these at your local hardware store. I am a wooden boatbuilder in North Washington. Look up lie nielsen tools and japan woodworker. Absolutely incredible! I have a very similar blade but with rounded edges rather than square(for cutting and shaping rubber seals), but can see a whole new use for it now. Though I'll probably lose a finger or two before I get the knack! Hehe!

before you learn to carve...learn to sharpen your tools as there doin the work....
you just point them in the right direction
