Rsageeth. I never saw Lu Chen In my life when I saw figureskaters like Kristi, Nancy,Sasha,Irina, Sarah, Nicole, Oskana and Michelle. This is the truth. Also I don't know much of Lu Chen, since she's from China and that she didn;t perform as frequently as these skaters.
i love Michelle or I wouldn't have come here to watch her performance...just thought that the commentator was very hypocritical because i had watched lu chen's sp as as well and he was quite critical of her layback which was actually very beautiful and better than Michelle's. And actually i thought her other spins were beautiful too :)
I never paid much attention to Lu Chen because she wasn't so well know as Michelle Kwan has been so I am not excited by Lu Chen's skating as much as with Michelle Kwan's skating. I saw Michelle Kwan in one skating show and was literally impressed. I find it hard to dislike this figure skater. She's very much a delight. And when Sasha was also shown I didn't have any idea who she was until when she was more prominent later on. I had watched Kwan on TV a lot.
Dick Button you HYPOCRITE!!!! you mentioned chen lu's leg position in her layback spin but not kwan's??? and chen lu's was definitely way better than kwan's!!
@rsageeth you can relax. Dick has mentioned Kwan's leg position several times, he just doesn't do it every time Kwan competes (which was a lot) because that is not good commentary work.
@callasalive am not disputing Michelle's score's or her win, was talking bout Dick Button's commentary and ignorance of some people who don't like skaters that were not famous enough...thats all..
@ everyone... Maybe we can all learn a lesson from Michelle Kwan about graciousness. You don't uplift anyone by bringing anyone down. It's surprising and appalling to come to a Michelle Kwan video to bash her competitors.
figure skating is so boring without michelle and her compatriots... i miss them all except tara pukeski and sluttyskaya who always seemed to find ways to win without ANY artistry period.
i agree with dick.. that look over her shoulders at the end was a darling moment and that look is whats missing in skating. PERSONALITY!!
Going out of his way to not be biased, I could only guess. The U.S. judge was also one of two 5.8s. The first minute of that program alone made it 5.9-worthy.
This performance was stunning. There is something about youth and artistic genius that is inexplicable...Michelle just had it..her rivals of the day minus Chen were clueless..although many would later beat Michelle and this left me thinking...Where is this sport going? I got my answer..to the COP....pity..
Yes and Slutskaya, Lipinski and Butyrskaya were such beautiful and highly technical skaters. I wish just one skater today could skate as beautifully as them..ah the telegraphed jumps, the stiff knee, and the no jump in the jump Lipinski...the judges are paying for what they did and will do in the future.....
absolutely. if you go back and watch her when she was 13 and 14 there was a natural grace and elegance about her movements. it was just unpolished. Mao Asada reminds me of Michelle a lot in that way because back in 2005 you could see she was graceful, her movements were just a bit rough around the edges; now, she has this amazing floaty-graceful quality to her skating that is beautiful. but for Michelle the transition in1996 was just amazing! she became this amazing artist seemingly overnight...
Chutson353, you are right: this beautiful program performed by 16-year-old Michelle still stands as something extraordinary. There have been other very good SPs since, but I don't think anybody has approached this lyricism and maturity in their teens. A unique and special moment....
Well Lu Chen had a perfect program too and got a 5.4 for one judge. I loved this program but I doubt Michelle has much to complain about. Her two main rivals skated perfectly and her marks were still by far the highest and 7 of the 9 judges had her first, with only 1 having Lu first, one having Irina first.
No, a serpentine footwork sequence is a step sequence in the shape of a serpent, not a serpentine. If Dick were right, the following sentence would also be correct: "It was a beautiful step sequence, in the shape of a circular." Notice, that's not right either.
actually, 'serpentine' means "in the shape of a serpent." dick is using an adjective when he should be using a noun. i know it's called a serpentine step sequence...but when you elaborate and say that it's "in the shape of a serpentine," it's wrong. Sorry. Someone with an English degree will back me up eventually.

was just using shop talk. "...in the shape of a serpentine," actually means in the shape of a "serpentine figure". A "serpentine" compulsory figure is a three lobed figure that gets its name because it is created with a series of two connect half circles. The ISU compulsory serpentine figures were number 5 and 6 in the ISU rulebook.

The sad thing is that Lipinski, Slutskaya and Butyrskaya all beat Kwan under the 6.0 system.
CoP? Pity?
Artistry was only half the score.

Dick Button is ABSOLUTELY correct...a serpentine is the name given to a school figure made by skating two figure eights that share one loop.
I wouldn't bet against Dick Button when it comes to knowledge of skating OR English.
gandy74 3 years ago 31
@gandy74 serpentine can also refer to an S-shaped footwork or spiral sequence.

shouldn't it be "in the shape of a serpent"?

Kipnepi 4 years ago
actually dick is right . . . serpentine means s shaped while a serpent is a snake
xsilverenergy 4 years ago
actually, 'serpentine' means "in the shape of a serpent." dick is using an adjective when he should be using a noun. i know it's called a serpentine step sequence...but when you elaborate and say that it's "in the shape of a serpentine," it's wrong. caseyphx 4 years ago 3
yeah you're right. he often makes mistakes when he talks.
dtdurr 4 years ago
serpentine is actually correct.
When used as a noun, it means something that winds sinuously, or something that resembles a serpent, which most commonly moves in an S shaped fashion.
Circular however is only used as an adjective.
So Dick is right. His language may be a bit outdated and archaic, but he definitely knows his stuff.
