  • Brilliant .. 8~)

  • the bass has to be the best part!

  • I think this version is better than the studio original, without a doubt.

  • This is soo sick! but they all look like they are trying to take mad dumps

  • Superb !!!

  • Can anyone send me Tortoise records?

  • @MrDEVINpoop Do them a favour & buy some

  • @MrMbland I am going to!

  • fuck i love that xylophone line

  • love this song but is it just me or are the other vibrations in the room causing really ugly, out of tune, noises on the xylophones?

  • how could anyone dislike this ._.

  • This is the best video I ever saw for shag faces hehe

  • so goooood

  • like if you heard this on gta Chinatown wars.

    great song btw

  • If you like Tortoise I totally recommend checking out Isotope 217 if you haven't already. It's Dan, John and Jeff from Tortoise with extra jazz. Fucking awesome.

  • how often do you see a tattooed vibraphone player ?

  • @idektron hehe idektron YOU can appreciate that this guy is also a frigg'n shit hot drummer also ; )

  • @8iamretarded8 yeah he's the man.

  • @idektron mike dillons go go jungle. dude rips on the vibes.

  • @idektron how often do you see music videos with a sidebar full of monkeyorgasms and a documentary about gay bonobo's ?

  • @idektron he also plays drums (:

  • i like the drumers face when he raealizes its a bit faster :)

  • Very Soft Machiney.

  • Thats the fucking border beetween jazz, fusion, prog-rock, post-rock, math-rock and awesome, all in one band

  • And the sacry thing is that their live shows are BETTER.

  • Yeah I've got a tortoise from a child here in Lausanne!!!!

  • I didn't know the Hotcake (well, plus the moog ring mod) could sound so raunchy and ... awesome.

  • Every band should be required by law to feature a kick ass zylophone player.

  • Ya prog! haha. I've never seen someone look so focused playing xylophone. There's a lot of great musician faces here actually :D

    -No Ideas But In Things

    (check out the music!)

  • great cover man, you guys rock!

  • @dentpopcan This is actually Tortoise

  • @gersijbers i know, haha, i was stoned when i found this video and i wanted to leave a dumb comment for some reason, haha, but if you like these guys listen to a band called grails, there really good to like these guys.

  • xylafone is epic!!!! hahaha dam man looks fun

  • TORTOISE!!!! LA MEJOR BANDA DEL MUNDO.. ASI DE SIMPLE Y CORTA

  • @fidoxico no e la mejor banda del mundo, es la mejor banda de TODO EL MALDITO UNIVERSO!!

  • holy crap this jams!!!!!!!

  • great performance & nice camera work also...

  • i never heard of tortoise, it's interesting, the drummer looks so happy @ 3:35

  • This band will always hold a place in my library. I own everything they have put out. The complexity of this track is badass.

  • This song reminds me of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention

Its nice to know there are still bands playing complex music like this, a feast for the ears

  • what effect does he use for that solo?

  • Where are they playing?

  • ther's a girl hid behind the drum kit with a camera

  • There's a hole in the ceiling. That's cool...

  • una Marimba!!

  • whats the genre of this band..........great music by he way........peace

  • It's called music.

    Or maybe experimental instrumental post-rock.

  • Why is all music not as good as this?

  • it should be noted that this performance was released prior to A Lazarus Taxon as part of a DVD series produced by Brendon Canty of Fugazi called Burn To Shine.

each volume takes place in a different city and features artists from that city performing throughout a single day in a house that is destroyed afterwards. volume 2 takes place in Chicago and features in addition to Tortoise the following:

Pit Er Pat, Wilco, The Lonesome Organist, Shellac, Freakwater & others.

  • amazing

  • just genial.

  • the snare sound awesome...anybody knows the measures and the tipe of wood??

  • John recommended Ludwig, and Ludwig only. He told me at a show. Sorry don't know the dimensions of that particular snare. Ludwigs supraphonic snares are awesome, highly sensitive.

  • looks like a metal snare to me...you can see it clearly in the first minute...probably steel or aluminum...usually metal snares sound the best in my opinion

  • @joaconeitor Looks like a 14X7 Dunnett Snare with a wood rim installed

  • thanks!!

  • McENTIRE is about to COME!!☆ミ

  • sad on you.

  • I know... :-(

  • maybe you are too stupid to get it... but i get it and i really like it

  • get your plugs out, dude

  • For what? For the effect that every comment here will be: "Oh my GOD, they are so amazing!! *-*.." or "Yeah, that's defenietly it..".

You will be happy then? Cangrats.

  • Just hear this for the first time, don't wanna hear it today. I'm walking the dog now. Bye-bye

  • This song is actually from their 2004 album, "It's All Around You," not "A Lazarus Taxon." Excellent video!

  • Yes, the studio version is from It's All Around You, but this video is on the dvd included with A Lazarus Taxon.

  • I see. Thought you were referring to the song itself, my mistake. Great upload!

  • @magneato23 Originally found on "Burn To Shine - Chicago". The whole DVD is great. Best in the entire BTS series, in my opinion.

  • @magneato23 wow who cares where its from.

  • @infowazz people who want to buy it!! like me!!

  • This video was originally released on the "Burn to Shine: Volume 2" DVD (released in 2005). Tortoise later included it on the DVD in the "A Lazarus Taxon" box set (released in 2006).

  • Yeah, but this video was in the Lazarus Taxon box set.

  • It's from the DVD series Burn To Shine.

  • around 2:58 or so sounds like mars volta lol! good stuff!

  • They're a tad better than Dream Theatre I reckon!

  • In your opinion. To say that though, is very small minded. They are completely different styles of music. It's the old apples and oranges comparison. I could never say I will always eat apples because they are better. Sometimes you want the taste of an orange. It's a simple analogy, but helps with these insipid arguments over who is better. Tortoise is Prog Rock, Dream Theater is Prog Metal. Maybe if you said a Tortoise cover band was better, there would be a quantitative debate.

  • Sorry shcan. It's all but impossible to compare Pink Floyd and Tortoise, and many people would consider them both prog rock (plus the difference in equipment because of the generation gap has to be considered), or Tool and Dream Theatre and they're both prog metal. I was just trying to be funny, but I've never been very good at that, what with my penchant for cheesiness, Debates are for politicians, I ain't one a them.

  • Tortoise genre is post-rock

  • I could see that too.

  • IN my opinion, Tortoise is more than prog-rock.

    guidolino23 is right. It's called post-rock.

  • Tortoise is Tortoise . I mean no offense but man please stop this. I wonder how would you label those guys back in mid 90's? It used to be called Good Instrumental Music back then.

  • You are for fags. Homo. You can't play it.

  • this is not jazz you stupid idiot.

  • Wow...sorry I've nothing left to add, superb!

  • tortoise makes my ears and my mind fly

  • Simply fantastic! I love Tortoise, I love this track and to see it played live, dirty in a little room is beyond awesome.

  • Simplemente Hermoso!!!!!!!

  • Years ahead of their time. Maybe in like 20 years everyone will loock back and be like damn they were amazing!!!!!!!

  • Tortoise its simply amazing!!!

  • I would love to be in that room, taking pictures or just listening to them play.

  • Their passion is so sexy

  • there are some simple-minded fucks out there...

  • oh, fucking great

  • yeah dude but they're just sincere right :)

  • i mean yea they definitely make beautiful music.

  • not sure why you got minus 3 thumbs? but these guys are random looking, sounding, etc. However, they are incredible. this song is on the sprout surf movie, along with seneca. this sond and seneca are the only 2 songs i have found that i even like by these guys. anyone know some similar tunes by these guys let me know!

  • all their songs are incredible but, patient and open mind are needed. TNT is, I think, their most perfect album, it grooves like wow but, all Tortoise music is just fabulous

  • Despite what MTV might tell you that's what a good portion of musicians actually look like.

  • @humeanesque it tottaly doesn't matter how you look, just play

  • @humeanesque such truths need to be pointed out from time to time! best comment!

  • @humeanesque the good ones anyway. that aren't caught up in music as fashion. just music as music.

  • Einai apisteftoi!!!!!

    Erxontai avrio a8ina sto synch!!!!

  • legends! cant wait to see em at the troubadour next month

  • their new album is supposed to be released on june 23. 09

looking forward to a new dose of tortoise.

  • Great song. Never heard of them before.

  • man that vibraphone player is gonna kill those vibes...

other than his technique this song is amazing

  • trecool

  • i was kidding mang, i love this band. shit, read my profile.

  • WARES THE SINGER!????//

  • hhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm...

  • love it!!!

  • repetitive my ass i dare you to find a less repetitive song with regards to tempo, feel and melody

  • Comment removed

  • nooot

  • But...that's their style.

  • What xylophone?

  • Maybe he thinks the bars are wood painted to look like metal?

  • love this song

  • the bass sound is incredible!

  • OMFG Awe inspiring sounds in my ears! Thank you Johnny machine!!!

  • this is so good. soo fucking good

  • i like you

  • TIempos q no escuchaba esta cancion!

    Stroke paso x aqui =D

  • excelente

  • this is great. if only they could bring this kind of energy to their studio records and live shows. this crackles. the albums and live shows ive heard of their recent work make me feel like i've drunk a bottle of cough syrup.

  • questi suonano, 'cidenti!!

  • this is good but I still prefer stuff like "do make say think" or "mono"

  • boooooo

  • Don't hate! I haven't heard Do Make Say Think but I've seen Mono and Tortoise and both are are doing amazing things in the world of music. They play different styles of music and both play their respective style exceptionally well.

  • huge joke. I'm getting a part of this song tattooed on my back. It's one of the best songs I've ever heard. And no offense, but dmst and mono don't have the innovative style that tortoise has. They're good, but tortoise is so unique and ever changing.

  • I guess the joke went right over my head, but like I said. I love both, but they're two completely different bands. I've been following both for over six years now, and I can enjoy both for what they are and honestly I don't prefer either. I accept them for what they are and appreciate them for that as well, and that's about it. From certain aspects Tortoise might be better but from another point of view I could say the same for Mono. It's all good music, and that's all I care about.

  • Damnit, come to California again soon!

  • magnifico

  • can't wait to see them next week

  • no seas presumido

  • hey that's the best I've heard of tortoise got to check out more

  • i have not found a better band than this or shellac or stereolab

  • Slint are pretty good!

So are The Sea And Cake

  • actually these both bands are related to tortoise you must know, slint was great that's fact, but tortoise is just the best

  • I know that. Slint are pre-Tortoise, and The Sea And Cake are running alongside.

    They're still 2 excellent bands!

  • Actually, there are no longer any members of Tortoise that were in Slint. That was just Dave Pajo who played on one album.

  • bla bla fucking bla

    me gusto la hueaita!!!

  • Cool tune.

  • God I like this band. Genious and talented muscians.

Did they made any dvd ??

  • Yeah, there's a DVD that comes in A Lazarus Taxon. It's quite good!

  • I saw them for the first time in Asheville,NC. One the most beautiful music around. YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE IT!

  • there are not words to describe how cool this shit is.
