@twoface0 because Sam worked out the reason himself-he never told Gene the truth. He asked Gene to help him fake his death so he could "disappear" but really he was going to "heaven". He never told Gene the reason why he had to fake his death! :)
Well, last ashes to ashes has come and gone and still no John Simm, What a big disappointment!!!! I can't believe they didn't have him coming out of the pub to greet them or even show him getting the drinks in. That would of been the ending of all endings! What were the writers thinking! We all know that everyone wanted to see Simm again........ Such a shame!

@BethGoth15 Look out for the combined box-set of series 1 & 2 - it's much better value than buying them both separately. Plus, some of the cast interviews are hysterical (one of the actors says Philip Glenister does a great Northern accent despite being "a soft Southern pansy" :)).
@cass2112 Basically: *all* of Gene Hunt's team, not just Alex & Sam, were dead - Gene died as a young bobby, and his mind somehow created a kind of personal purgatory that attracts dead cops. Meanwhile, Jim Keats was really an entity working for a "Nick Callaghan" ("Old Nick" is one of the names for the Devil - hence the lift descending into that red light). In a nutshell, then: Gene was a kind of guardian angel, and Jim Keats was a destructive demon, looking to tear Gene's world down.

I think they could be dead, and they don't realise it. I think Alex is having a near death experience, and she is trapped in limbo, because the man from the last series was from her world, and he was in the same situation.

I bought all the LOM and A2A's thus far on DVD and will definitely be getting this final series when its released. I'm just hoping that the writers aren't being straight with us and John Simm will put in a cameo at the end. (Get on the phone guys there's still time for a bribe - lol ) I'd even settle for some previous footage if need be. As much as I love this series I can't help but feel that Life on Mars seems a little bit ..detached ..now. Seeing Sam Tyler would compact it all again for me.
