sorry but the males do have wings the females dont and yes you can kill them very easy you take a good can of bug spray to them i had a yard full of them last year i tryed every thing and finely got out my trusty bug spray out and it worked
i caught one with wings thinking it was a big fire ants' queen and all of the real big fire ants i had jumped it and killed it. turms out that "winged queen" was a victim of my beastass ants
Nice vid.. I have seen a lot of these, but not that many in one place at one time.. They are cool insects, and are very tough.. They also "scream" if trapped, like held down with a stick, or a shoe.. Like you would to smash it, but actually just applying enough pressure to hold it there.. Sounds like it is calling for "help" Haha, hope not, cause one of them bastards stings can make you want to cut off that limb to rid the pain.. BAD BAD hurt bud.. Careful. Also they will fight anything
some of them are full fledged wasps with wings and all in SC. they scare the crap out of me. you need 22 just about to kill them.(never wrote out the word fledged before look kind of weird ha)
Yup I stepped on one of those once and to my surprise it didnt do shit so I stomped it a few more times and held my boot on it and it felt like it was moving my foot so I tried to grind it into the sidewalk and finally got it to limp, actually slowed it down enough to get my 16" framing hammer. I whapped it twice to slow it further, ran and got my gun... Yup i killed it with the fourth shot... T-U-F-F lil fuckers, nuff said. P.S. everything is true except for the gun, the hammer did the job :-P
when i was like 6 i found one and picked it up, needless to say im 25 yo now, have been bitten by a black widow, stung by a bark scorpion (fuckin az) , and broken multiple bones, and for the amount of time that the velvet ant venom was coursing my little body, i can honestly say DONT FUCK WITH THESE HELLIANS
@dunno414 then you should call them pig ants... because pigs squeal, not cows. cows moo... ;) they're called cow killers because they have been known to actually kill cows.
Yea i saw one of these tough fuckers in my yard week ago tried to kill it with rocks, logs, shoe evrything but the invincible fuck kept right on going
These were around my great aunt & uncle's place in Riverton, Wyoming. Used to go up there every summer, saw these things all the time. They are indeed interesting creatures!
i saw wona these in virginia. back when i used to watch videos on youtube of bugs fighting other dangerous creatures i saw this type in a lot of the videos., so when I actually saw one i was like shit! nice!
i actually cut one in half when i was a kid cuz it was on me and i didnt know wtf it was and it like squeeled and kept walking in two pieces fucking creepy
@skyculturenetwork I believe the adults drink nectar from flowers. The larvea of these wasps feed on the larvea of bumble bees. I definetly know that the adults do not eat any bugs.
I love Dasymutilla !!! D. magnifica and D. occidentalis look soooooooo good! I want that many of them in my house as pets!!!!!! :D They are so cute!!!
I remember being twelve and quickly grabbing one, and flinging it. Literally touched it for 1/3rd to 1/2 seconds. That son of a bitch stung me that fast, mutherfucker hurt for a couple of hours. I found it again. Caught it, cut in half, stuck in freezer for like two weeks, pulled it out, with in half an hour it was thrashin around looking to eat or sting something. Everytime I see one on concreate I make sure to stomp on it, then slide my boot to make sure its ripped apart. Fuck 'em!!!!!!!!
Sveldtguy sorry I had to block you it's only because I lack time to play ping pong with you re matters we both know are subjective; and in order to clarify them, needlessly painful and dangerous experimentation would have to take place. Caution is advised---insect stings do cause at least dozens of deaths in USA annually. Take them seriously and avoid.
Cow killers? There may be true account from somewhere of cow being stung by several red/black VA's, the cow is enraged with pain, stampedes into standing water, hits large branch that fell in, trips, and drowned. Just a possibility. But anyone who is really allergic to insect venom and would die of lesser sting would go down fast from this one. In Kentucky they are sometimes called mule killers. Good thing they lack wings, they'd be inflicting more stings.
One of my friends (when I was a kid) cut one in half and picked up the tail. BAD mistake his hand looked like he had put on a baseball glove within a few seconds...and not just one sting several. I have been stung my self but not like he was, the really small ones feel like a sweat bee.
One of these bit me as a kid. I threw it in an empty pepsi can and held a lighter under the can for about 4 minutes. He was literally still wiggling, so, i got my butane torch and LIT THIS SUCKA UP!
ANYTIME I see an insect with that brilliant red, or yellow or other "hot" color. I automatically assume they are venomous! AND I RUN AWAY! Dont we notice that? Wasp for instance. THat brilliant Yellow and black strips! Bumble bees too! DAMN! Im SCARED of them!
@fueledbymusic3 Good observation. The common red wasp, polistes carolina, is extremely aggressive with a severe sting; however, it might take 3 or 4 red wasps combined to match the severity of one red/black cow killer and unless you'd seen the length of the stinger you would not believe it. This species is easily worse than Brazil's bullet ant. How so? Because natives take 100's of BA stings & recover 30 red wasp stings are fatal to adult human 10 cow killer stings might get it done (shock).
@skirts365@Sveldtguy Fair question. Google "red wasp stings + fatality" you'll see the 30 number. On bullet ants, you may have seen on You Tube the ritual of the glove with over 100, maybe more, of these inside, the hand is put into glove, after hours of delirium, slow recovery. Objectively, it would take lots of $ to induce anyone to compare a cow killer sting with other significant species. Notice I said "might get it done" I am assuming based on rep the CK sting is much worse than RW
In actuality you cannot assign a set number of stings that would result in death for any insect sting. Some individuals have survived dozens if not hundreds of stings from various insects and some people have died from one or two stings from the same insect.
Also, the cow killer or velvet ant is not the most painful sting from an insect. This is reserved to the tarantula hawk (pepsis wasp) and the bullet ant as the most painful (according the Schmidt index of pain).
@Sveldtguy 1st point correct the # was from MD's. Most painful is OPINION not cut & dried fact. Pain depends on sting site; was venom sac fully loaded; person's tolerance; I dispute Schmidt so do others. The order in which 1 person gets stings affects perception of later stings! As stings are taken, antibodies build in blood, gradually lessening severity of other stings Schmidt didn't tell you that. Want to try a puss caterpillar? Tissue damage makes bullet ant seem like wimp. Others also
All you have said here is correct, including Schmidt pain index (its all relative). Pain perception to a great degree, is personal and individual. My main disagreement with your original statement is with your allegations of potential death from stings. It cannot be said with any degree of accuracy how many of any insect stings will kill an individual. My background is a degree in Biology.
@Sveldtguy Biology covers HUGE body of investigation unless you have specialized in sting related fatalities your degree gives you little expertise in highly specific SUBSET of biology--like a general MD wouldn't have retinal knowledge of ophthalmologist. 30 figure wasn't my determination, it was from emergency MD's. I spent some time trying to locate URL no luck believe what you are comfortable with from experience I know 1 polistes carolina sting = excruciating pain smaller victim more risk
Still not a proven statement. Making wild claims causes the general population to panic when they see said insect and begin killing them in a needless manner instead of educating them to have a healthy respect for them. It's irresponsible and fosters irrational fears in the layperson.
@Sveldtguy You're peeved that I underscored the limitations of your degree. Anyone reading between the lines could perceive that to be at risk of death by velvet ants, they'd have to go way out of their way to do so, or for criminal intent. My uncle showed me a red wasp nest he burned in a deer blind in East Texas that had over 400 cells, that's deadly to anyone coming too close. I don't have to prove anything, I cited a source from a possibly expired URL. I DID suggest healthy respect.
The males have wings and do not have stingers. The females, on the other had, like most females have stingers and are agressive, if you hold one down with a stick they make a screaming sound.
dude im from arizona..and 1 year i saw pure red ants the size of my thumb...i didnt know what to think...some had wings...but they were just dead everywhere...im trying to find them on youtube...some had wings...they look just like fire ants but 3 times bigger..and they were only around for like a month ..hmmm
My blood runs cold looking at them. I lost my schools state wrestling championship, my teammates were so pissed at me they showed me I did wrong. They held me down, pulled down my pants & placed a cow killer on my dickhead. Mother fu**ers tortured me. Days later, I beat the sh*t out of them that did me that.
In the Inquisition they were looking for new ways to make people suffer. They would have LOVED these creatures (stings to inside of nostrils, eyes, etc) they were the most cruel people in all of history.
Eat plenty of freshly cut garlic. Chop 3 cloves up small enough to swallow and drink orange juice and have three tab;ets of echinacia herbs. Do it for 4 days straight. Until pain subsides.
OKAY: red velvet ants are not lethal. They're stings are especially painful, but they are not lethal. They might be lethal if you get covered in them and/or are allergic, but a single red velvet ant is not lethal, only painful.
