@krish909 are u kidding me?! He was one of the guttsiest runner of all time!! I mean he set an ncaa meet record with 12 stitches in his god damn foot! He might not of won the gold but his style of running was unlike any other. Screw off man cause you dont know shit about pre or distance running
People liked Prefontaine because of how he ran and why he ran, not because of his wins or his losses. Just because he wasn't the greatest runner to ever live doesn't mean he sucked. Anyone who says Prefontaine sucked -- he had more guts than you do anyway, and he obviously loved running more than you ever will, so get over it.
You guys need to lay off Pre. The man died at an age younger than most distance runners peak and was one of the most electrifying college athletes of all time.
I do agree with all of you in that their are plenty of awsome distance runners out there. Pre is just one of many. For example Billy Mills & Abebe Bikila.
Pre was awsome runner. He held many American Records from the 2000 meter to the 10000 meter. The guy had a lot of guts. However, he did have flaws like any human.
In actuality guys, Pre did kind of suck. I mean, seriously the guy may have been bad ass, but he never got one gold medal. Always making a show of himself and then coming up short at the Olympics, where it counts. That whole "Stop Pre" nonsense was just him galavanting during a XC meet about how much of a "BA" runner he was. Oh yea, and how did he die? Got piss drunk and drove into a bloody rock. Not exactly the epitome of a great American runner.
YUP! He only won in the US. Not to say crap about US runners but they can't compete against other countries. If Pre won any World Championship races against TOP COMPETITORS, then yeah I would say he's good, but thats just not the case. You can find better runners that Pre!
From what I have read about Pre he was coming into his own in world competition. After his performance in Munich he trained his ass off and competed against the best in European circiut. From what I have read it seems like Pre was maturing after Munich.
Also, Prudenshu. Pre did a lot to get olympic athletes more rights and opportunities so they could make money while competing. Back in Pre's day one would loose their amateur status if they accepted money for competition. Probably one reason why US distance runners were not as good as their European Counterparts who were subsidized by their governments.
Hahah, you read this all from his website huh. I give him credit for that, but that doesn't make him the greatest runner. He was reponsible for the running boom in the 70s. But not the greatest, one of um though.
