my yorkie is showing some coughing symptoms but it's not constant though after she had her vaccination with the vet. I constantly monitor it right now if it's just allergies since it's spring and tons of pollen are all over the air... when I press her throat to check the coughing she doesn't cough.
my vet told me not to use human medicine on my dog as it could kill him because certain medicines are made for humans and certain medicines are made for animals..dont just use any cough medicine as certain ones contain ibuprofen which could kill a dog or course liver failure..your always better off going to a vet and getting proper advice from someone who knows what there talking about.
my dog used to make these noises but i never realized it for while now hes doing this wierd noise that like he is kinda coughin through hus nose he is 9 years old so is the like some kind of severe thing.......i really need to know hes my baby and ive had him since i was a litttle boy
My puppy too I got her for my birthday she's a morkie and she has had it for a while now and she's getting better but then it'll come back so I keep her in my room with a humidity transmiter Its terribly scary. Costly too.
I am looking this up because I have taken my dogs to two different vets for a total of three exams. He is on his third round of anti-biotics and it has been a month. . It does seem that he has Kennel cough. I just didn't know it would last this long and be so resistant to anti-biotics. It is heartbreaking to watch him cough and wheeze this much. I am so frustrated that the vet can't cure him. I am wondering about trying cough syrup. I will ask the vet about what dosage. Emilie
my poor dog has kennel cough. she got it from another dog that lives in our building and was rescued from a kennel. it is so difficult watching our dog suffer with the cough. we can't sleep at night because she is coughing. she ended up with a fever a few nights ago and we got so worried, we took her to the vet and he prescribed her antibiotics. we have spent over 800$ on our dog because of this virus. if you have a dog, you do not want them to suffer from this illness, prevention is key.
We adopted a dog for animal control less than a week ago and he had shown symtoms of kennel cough so we took him to the vet yesterday and he recieved medication. What sucks now is that he gave it to our other dog, and she has to go to the vet now too. Kennel cough really sucks :P
6. u can use an over the counter pediactric cough medicine, Don't use cough medicine that contains acetaminophen or ibuprofen! i have no clue how much and how often or if it works so please u may need to consult a vet depending on how sever the symptoms !!!!

2.use a humidifier or put ur puppy in bathroom. steam will help
To all these people who preach the same old, patronizing, judgemental, predictable stuff about "having dogs and not affording them...." well, sometimes things change and financial circumstances change. You have a beautiful realationship with your much loved dog who gets ill once in her 3 years and you're looking for advice and you read all these smug A HOLES. well, I'm glad I don't know you as people. and thanks for that, NOT HELPFUL/
yes but if you suspect your dog of having something that could be as serious as kennel cough the responsible thing for a pet owner to do is to ensure their pet receives proper medical treatment.
we all know when we get a dog that there could be expensive vet visits, if you get a dog but can't afford to take it to the vet or get pet insurance then you are just being irresponsible. it's our duty to provide proper medical care to our pets if they are sick.
@normanmj I didnt say to get rid of the dog - I meant be a responsible human and dont buy a dog in the first place. Same goes for kids - if you cant afford to provide for them, wear a frikkin rubber. There's millions of starving mouths in the world as it is.
i think my dog has kennel cough, but its not that serious because she don't do that cough that much, but she has been laying around and not acting herself, she don't play but shes happy to go outside
I took your advice and gave my doggy 1/2 teaspoon(for child under 6), non alcohol Walmart brand cough syrup. He ABSOLUTELY hated it, but the coughing subsided significantly and now, he's not weezing and sleeps through the night! Thank you thank you thank you!!

Number 2: I planted this question 12 hours ago and got a response. Quicker replies.
Number 3: Say what you want about the internet, but if you got bit by a garden snake and possibly wonder what precautions you can use to it, a good portion of people would use the internet that DOES ues good information judging on the site. Asshole....
1: My name is not jesus. and it might be a good idea to save that money for college, especially since you spell it "collage."
2. If your worried about your dog, a vet is quicker. I have an emegency center. 7 numbers on a phone is quicker than typing into Youtube and waiting fpr a response while your dog is choking.
Unless you know EXACTLY what bit you, again, emergency is the right answer.
I guess it just matters how much you care about your pet. Asshole....
If I didn't "care about my pet" as you put it, then WHY would even come to the internet and want answers? Why are YOU even on here in the first place also acting like getting answers from Youtube isn't reliable? Plus, more than 12 hours ago it was, what? 11 at night? How many local vet centers do you REALLY think are open at that time to ask about that? And how many do you REALLY think will say it's something like that? Instead they'll give you a time and an appointment to come on in.
Well, #1: How do you know I'm just consulting Youtube for animal medical advise? XD
#2: Some guilt knowing you are right? lol
Alright....I'm defensive because you're acting like I'm a bad animal owner without even knowing me. I walk my dog EVERY day for god sakes. I'm pretty sure I do care about my dog a good amount if not more.
i think my dog has kennel cough, a very mild case. she started with the symptoms on friday and it is now monday. she really only coughs at night and in the morning. during the day it is a real subtle, infrequent cough. im choosing to let the "cold" run its course. im an RN and feel people are often too quick to run to the doctor for antibiotics. the body was built with an immune system for such instances. if i feel it isnt resolving on its own, then will seek medical attention.
i agree with you it is true what you say same thing we need to do with humans well always run to the doctor for everything and we get carried away.......thats why most of us get sick easily and are very weak
yes, I agree but sometimes the symptoms can be overlooked bc you dont always realize how serious it can be. I think if you know your animal well, you have an idea when it is overwhelming them, and then a doc visit is due. There are new bugs out there every day, and even with the best care, our buddies can get very sick.
i think my dog has this cough, but we also recently got an American Pit Bull terrier, and she loves to play with her but shes so big compared to my chihuahua, should i keep them separated to see if she gets any better? if not im going to take her to the vet.
Everyone, make sure before you treat you dog and it is a recent purchase you check the laws out in your state. If you self treat the dog you may fall outside the 14 day requirement for diagnosis and treatment. The pet store or breeder will become responsible for the bills if they have an infectious disease. I am up to 2,000 dollars. My dog not only had Kennel Cough that turned into Pneumonia she also had ear mites and intestinal parasites. I had a triple hit.
i just got my dog at the kennel (6 day stay) and it seems like she does have it, BUT, could it also just be a hoarseness from barking constantly, which she also does a lot in that environment?
the other thing is that i just vaccinated for the kennel cough only 1 week prior, so im wondering if that was enough time (my vet said it was).
HI, there are many strains of the bacteria that can cause Kennel cough and the vaccine may not always be effective. My dog had kennel cough and turned into pneumonia, I am now paying over 2,000 dollars to have it cleared up. You should speak to your vet. OTC's do not work for a dog and should only be recommended by a vet and most say it does not work. Be very careful and take your dog to the vet.
All min had the shot less than 6 months ago, my baby girl was kenneled for 3 days while we had company and she returned as a cariier of it and proceeded to give it to my other dogs , sigh , the shot does not always work
Hi Auditguy2, thanks for the advice. My dog had a bad cough so took him to a vet. he agreed that cough syrup is not appropriate because not approved by FDA and my dog is so small that 1/2tbs would be wrong and too much. Thanks again and good luck with your dog. Is the pneumonia bad? What is her/his prognosis?
I think you should specify a dog should see a vet first. Robotussen is not approved by FDA for dogs or cats and can be a poor choice if the dose is incorrect. I just bought a puppy and she had kennel cough but turned into pneumonia. Do not think you should just recommend this without making sure they see a vet first to make the recommendation. I think this is very wrong to do to pet owners.
The bottle displayed in the video is Robutussin, it is nasty and is not approved by the FDA and there are no clinical tests. If you give your dog too much it can be nasty. Be very careful. One big point is I got my dog from a pet store, if I followed this rule I would have been outside the 14 day Unfit for Sale in NY and would have not been able to recover the money for my dogs pneumonia.
Hey, my small dog has a really awful cough. Every thing the vet has treated him for, just hasn't helped! It sounds like a dry cough, then at the end of the couple of coughs he hacks. He had a slight temp, but I noticed he only starts coughing when people are around him. He's awake and everything, but when no one is around him he doesn't cough at all. 0,0
I disagree with the 10 day rule stated above. We had our puppy for 10 days and was being treated for kennel cough and turned in pneumonia. We have a responsibility as pet owners to give them the best of care and this should be taking them to a vet when sick. Do not think on line resources should determine when an animal should be treated. Only a vet can make this decision based on the individual condition of the dog. I think the vet comes first and the pet owner then should monitor.
I said if its a LIGHT case. This is a case that if the vet sees will not give meds for (I have had serval rescued dogs fall onto this). If the case isn't light then the dog might need some meds to help kick it.
That is my point, if a VET sees, is the important part of this. Also Robotussin is not approved by the FDA for use on animals and only a vet can provide the correct dosage if it is recommended which is rare. I think any video on this should clearly sate that it is under a recommendation of a vet. The dosage is based on a dogs weight and could do more harm than good. Since there is no clinical evidence approved by the FDA it should be clear. My dog has a light case and now pneumonia.
I never said Robotussin was ok, I believe it is never ok to give dogs meds for humans, no matter how much I hear about it. And don't go attacking me over this, I was just stating what I know, if you don't like it, just don't listen, I never said you HAD to do as I said, that is the great thing about the internet, you can choice to do whatever you like, you are never forced to do anything. People out there just put out their opinions for others to listen to, that is all we do.
Lucky you got the antibiotics but some strains will not react to the antibiotics and it can get worse. I had antibiotics for my dog but it turned out she had a serious strain and turned into pneumonia in less than 5 days of having the dog. Thanks god I was within the law to have the pet store pay for the diagnosis and treatment.

People out there just put out their opinions for others to listen to, that is all we do.

no you do need an antibiotic w/out the vet visit if you can get it, it is about 20 bucks
