Isn't it amazing how, even though every idiot knows that "I don't recall" is the oldest lawyer's/politician's trick in the book, these people STILL say that to get around questions? You'd think they could think of something else ... or why didn't he just lie and say no?

Well it's just about the only way out. Otherwise you're risking conviction for lying as an extra offense. If you get off you're simply charged with criminal neglect, etc.
