Hi! Have you thought about intellectus diet (search on google for intellectus424dietcom)? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my father lost crazy amounts of weight with it.
When I was in my teens and 20's I could lose fat with just intense weight training. Cardio was more of a social thing. Get on a cardio machine to chat up a lady. Now in my late 30's I need both weights and cardio to lose fat. I eat at a calorie deficit, and maintain about 45/40/15 ratio protein/carb/fat. The calorie deficit I run, especially with the activity level I'm at, I should be phenomenal. But I am just average. On the bright side, if I didn't work this hard, I'd be obese.
PLEASE ANSWER THIS FOR ME! my main goal in the next month and a half is to rapidly increase the size and strength of my leg muscles because ive got big muscles up top and skinny chicken legs. i also want to decrease body fat. should i run on the treadmill? or will that slow the growth of my leg muscle?

@StylexSai buttttt, if you do cardio on different days you have less time working out on your weightlifting days then if you were going to start running afterwards and you might feel worn out if you did cardio right after making you not get as good a run. Also, if you're anything like myself, you like working out and hate "offdays" so separating cardio from weightlifting days would let you enjoy yourself working out everyday. Except if you dont feel like it.

i just want to comment on your last sentence that muscle is gain through lifting and not eating. well its a bit confusing cause you are saying muscle is gain through lifting. but if you don't eat the proper amount of protein how are you gonna gain muscle as muscle need protein to get repaired? so lets say if i am eating less and not the proper amount of protein and lift everyday and do intense lifting well will i gain muscle??? i think not cause protein is needed too. pls tell me what you think

@BodyPerformanceTV I think you are mistaken. there is no fat in muscle. Your analogy is poor, Steak comes from cows, they are bread to taste good. The fat in the meat is what gives it flavour ... look at kobe beef, its full of fat.
Hey I'm trying to build muscle and not put on too much fat. I do cardio for 30 min. and burn about 450 calories and lift for about 25-35 min. How much am I supposed to eat to gain muscle but not too much fat?
No but I wouldn't worry about cycling my carbs,. Just eat a balancd diet, eat a bit less, watch the junk food, snacking and high calories drinks and you'll be fine.
I hear about carb cycling. so i was wondering, if on my cardio days I eat only veggies as a source of carbs (also lots of meats), will I be in risk of losing proteins from muscle

i hit the gym about 2 hours a day i always use to just lift afraid of running and extended cardio, but this was helpful because since i lift the cardio helped define and harden my muscles giving more of a symetrical look. so thank you for talking about this it made alot of sense and well worked!!
ok welli was doign ab crunches and i think i had a slight hernia should i stop doing ab crunches? hernia i dont know if it was actually that but there was a bulge and it bulged by itself without me contracting near my left lower ab... what is it? help thnx..
Hello!! I was wondering- I only want to burn FAT, No weight...... If i am burning 500 calories/day with Cardio, should i replace the calories burn, with protein, so not to lose muscle and just burn the fat, I would REALLY appreciate a response...I have been a little confused about the process....THANK YOU
hey steve will an low carb diet help you to lose weight and keep your muscle weight up? I am about 180 with 22% body fat...I really want to get down to about 8% or so...mabe even 10..what can I do? how should I be eating? sould i be working out verry verry hard? 30mins of cardio?
one problem i do have is that i do not get hungary that much...an if i eat large amounts of protein i feel bloated...for days!.

hey Steve,i havent been doing any kind of physical activity for the past 2 years and my staminas quite low too and my colestrol level shootin up too although i look lean i have fat on my belly and chest
i tried cardio+weight training but after cardio im exausted shud i only concentrate on cardio?
Since you're trying to lose weight, skip the protein shake and have a small carbohydrate drink like Gatorade after your workoout. Your normal diet supplies enough protein for muscle growth.
Hello Steve, I'm a fan of yours from Portgal. I'am doying a cardio and weight training simultaneouslyand my objective is too loose body fat.One day cardio(1h10min) the other lifting weights..6 times a week(3 days each).Should i only take a protein shake on weight lifting day??(30 min after training).Thanks.

when you talk about the guys that work out for the body building and you said they are losing muscle, isnt there a way to gain the muscle they loose with working out?
is it safe to drink raw eggs? i don't know if people are just bullshitting or they really do drink raw eggs there's some videos of them drinking raw eggs.
Intensity is the key to training frequency so if you're not training too intensely, yes you can train a muscle every day. Ex-push-ups are not that intense % can be done every day. If you notice your strength & energy decreasing then allow a day of rest OR you could train every day but train different muscle groups. Either weight training schedule will not affect your weight loss. The most important things for weight loss are consistent good eating and consistent cardio!
Hey Steve, I'm an 18 year old female, trying to lose some weight. Right now, I'm on a reduced calorie diet, and I lift at the gym for an hour in the morning, and then run 3-4 miles in the afternoon, everyday. I don't want to give up running everyday, but I've heard from some of my friends that lifting everyday is not good for you. Should I switch to every other day, for lifting, instead? How will that affect my weight loss, too?
@rockyraccoon44 Theres also more great info on my BlogTalkRadio show. Once there search Steve Turano. The show can also be downloaded from iTunes. The most recent shows can also be heard on my website home page (at the bottom) once they upload. Tell a friend! ~Steve Turano
so right now i plan to lose 1 pound of fat a week while maintaining muscle i have by doing 2-3mins cardio warm up, bodyweight training for the specific muscle of the day, then 20-30min skipping rope cardio. my caloric intake is limited to 4-5meals at around a total of 1600 calories with very little fat, no simple carbs, only some complex carbs and high lean protein. do you think this will be enough to maintain the muscle? i don't mind losing fat slow/fast but keeping muscle is priority 1.
Sure, do your cardio after you lift. I do. It will not make any difference. If you want faster fat loss then just either decrease the quantity of the food you normally eat or improve the quality, meaning lower fat and sugar content. OR no fast foods, no sweetened drinks, no desserts. It's easy to cut calories without having to sacrifice. And you can still build muscle while losing fat!
hey im trying to lose my stomache and get bigger at the same time. I hear its not good to do cardio after lifting because it hurts your gains. I dont want to have to do my cardio on seperate days do u have any advice?
It might be muscle mass depending on how long and hard you've been lifting. But if it's a lot of weight it's probably fat. Check your eating (quantity & quality,) be consistent with your cardio and then be patient. If you're still gaining weight it means you're not creating a calorie deficit.
So if I am weight training, doing 20-30 mins. of cardio every day, and watching what I eat for the most part, why am I not losing weight?...I seem to be gaining weight!...I keep telling myself it's muscle mass, I just don't know for sure
If you're not eating less than 2000 calories that's ok BUT you then have to do cardio! The more you do and the longer you do it, the better. 30 mintues - 5 days a week would be great. This will help burn extra calories.
i dont get under 2,000 calories a day (with one cheat day). once a day i'll treat myself to a Powerbar Harvest just to stay sane. the only 2 days i dont work out are thursday and friday...on those days i have a protein shake in the mourning and rice cakes (35 cal) throughout the day...
someone please help...i dont really care about losing muscle mass as long as i get lean.
all i want to do is get ripped...as if i were getting ready for a show.
right now im doing the p90X workout in the mournings and swimming in the evenings. At first, i could only swim 10 laps (32 laps is a mile at this pool). So i swam those laps 5 days a week. every week i add a lap. now i can do 13 laps and next week i'll do 14 ect. ect...
at the gym are the calorie counters on the treadmills accurate because after about 30 minutes its says about 500 calories. After every 100 burned I do a high intensity interval of about a minute
she also is stocky build have a shape but the shocking thing was I could start to see ab muscles in her stomach at the weight she was at I was pretty surprized and you could see the muslces in her thighs and arms why was that ?
She should continue walking on the treadmill and watching what she eats. She will lose more weight. And as she loses more weight she will better be able to see her muscles.
She still do I've seen her muscles they look good.. she sent me pictures but I was shock how she look at 310 pounds having her abs coming in and stuff like that and having her biceps coming in turning into the shape of a ball.... her calves having a ball shape in them as well and the thigh muscles inprint coming in and stuff.... you saying she will lose more bodyfat she will get more slimmer right but be rip up ?
do you suggest those people who call themselves "hard gainers" to lift only that much? could you still gain 1 pound of muscle mass within that week only doing it twice a week?
i do weight lifting,a lot,im 15 is there a way to eat and gain muscle without having to work too much everyday?i have a lot of work and all to do,pm me if you have advice
If you cut up everything on your plate (except the veggies or fruit) and left 4-5 pieces of food on the plate, meaning you didn't eat them, you would eat fewer calories. If you're eating a sandwich, don't take the last 4 bites to finish it.
my woman friend was 330 pounds and 5'8 tall and I had her eatting 5-6 small meals but she work at grocery store and I had her getting on the traidmill 30 minutes a day she lose like 20 in 3 months but her calves muscles was shaping up and you can seee the turning into ball and her biceps and did the same she was over all toning up shaping what would happend if she keep going ?
this is for u haters out there, go research more before u post something u don't even know anything about working out and staying fit, he is a professional, he knows what he is saying he won't post a vid on bs. lol man boobs what are u haters high, blind or just stupid? look at hes vid when he takes of he's shirt. lol idiots
the part were he says muscle is gained by lifting and not eating isn't correct, your diet is your main source of growth,i know because i wasted lots of time last year eating like shit and working out hard, I am on a good diet now and gaining size like mad, this guy is correct about pretty much everything, but he IS wrong about that
yeah but if u eat and eat and eat and do no weights r u gona grow muscle???? no. building muscle is the function of lifting he isnt sayin eating is not important he is just sayin that lifting is the tool which starts growth. maybe u just interpreted it wrongly, diet is vital but if everyone just ate well and grew muscle then we cud sit on our asses lol
ghmmm that example isnt accurate thou coz ofcourse guy b will b stronger if guy A doesnt eat anything lol. the fact of the matter is its all up to thew individual some people can get away with shit nutrition but work out excessively, its a non stop argument these days you just have to do wat works for u
also it would make more sence if you said, please lose your manboobs before you make the videos, because if he had them while he was making it, they wouldnt go away if he lost them, stupid.
Not at all. There are numerous BENIFITS to having higher lean muscle mass, stregth, balance, inury prevention and recover, etc. But it is in no way unhealthy, unless you are to the point of visible bones, in such a case, seek help now.
Ok, it sounds like he's trying to dismiss the idea that excessive cardio is muscle wasting as a myth. His reasoning is that when bodybuilders do hours of cardio, they're simply not eating enough, which leads to catabolism and gives rise to this "myth".
First, this is not a myth. Cardio is catabolic because of several reasons.
Most notably, cardio gives rise to cortisol, a catabolic hormone. Cortisol levels rise significantly with long, repetitive work like running. Also, the excessive eccentric movements in treadmill work contribute significantly to muscle loss. There are other reasons, but my 500 char limit stops me from listing them.
20 to 30 minutes of cardio, 2 to 3 times a week, is acceptable to gain some aerobic benefit without significant catabolism.
Muscle is gained through eating as much as it is through lifting. Diet should take priority over exercise when designing a program.
Finally, for "basic cardio" - the strengthening of the heart and lungs to get oxygenated blood to working muscles - weight lifting is all that is required. I rarely design programs with any treadmill work for beginners, as the weights do plenty.
Yes, and there is a far better way to lose fat than running hours on a treadmill. I try to be polite so I wont post the link here, but email or msg me, and I'll give you the link to some articles I've written on the subject. You CAN lose fat quicker by walking than by running.
i hear sprints are very effective burning calories and such. is there a limit to how often they shud be done in a week in your opinion. also how many in one session wud be gud
I once dropped 100 pounds back in the day when I did only cardio. And oh yeah, I loss more than fat, I lost muscle. My face looked boney. I do cardio and lift weights now, and its worked for me for sometime. keep making the vids, you are inspirational.
You are awsome Steve, because of you I am finaly on a diet that actually works--eating what I love but less and exercising whenever I can--I look forward to ur videos!

look, let's face it, the first thing wrong here is that he is perfectly round and looks like a blueberry. fatties shouldn't talk about weight loss until they lose some themselves. his waste is clearly as big as his shoulders. get the fat out of your eyes, people!

um... he's big in a FAT way. that IS lazy. loose the weight. do some yoga. maybe you fat slobs would understand what a healthy body weight looks like by having a nice trip to india where people can't AFFORD to be fat like this jackass in this video.
Thanks Steve, you've inspired me to go back to the gym. I used to work out regularly, but stopped about 6 months ago...after watching some of your videos, Ive gotten back into it and have renewed vigor - you da man.
look at you your probably all fit and and probably have muscles but i bet your fuckin butt ugly and you trying to put all these people down you sad ugly fuck hahahah
you're just jealous cuz i'm hot and it's not like steve is hot so this isn't really much of a competition, hahaha. you know what they say: you are what you eat. so steve torano should lay off the marshmallow cookies and if he can't do that, he should retire. his tits are way beyond a d-cup, and i say tits not pecs for a reason.
steve, you've inspired me man. all of your videos are on point and perfect! I'm 6'3 260 lbs right now, with 20% bodyfat. I workout regularly but eat what i want. After watching your videos ive started to cut back my portions add more cardio and workout with more intensity. my gains are incredible i have 19" biceps and my stomach is going down immensely. thanks for all the videos and good advice. you are truly a pioneer of health and fitness.
pro body building (50+pounds of pure muscle and upwards) is just wrong anyway. when they are on stage flexing their muscles they are actually in their weakest state.
I have done all three of these with success for almost a year. I have lost 51 pounds and before my gallbladder went bad and I starved for two weeks because of it, I had reduced by body fat by 5%. (I'm getting that back now!)
4 less bites per meal for the day. if you eat 5 meals a day thats 20 bites total that you restricted. Its a simple way of reducing total daily calorie intake.
Yeah same here. Max I've ever done in an hour on 16 resistance (I can't handle 20 yet) with a steady pace is 1660. I wanted to go for 2000, but my back started hurting really bad.
Yea, and you were going 100MPH on the elliptical too, right? Stop your BSing, buddy, no one believes you. And here's a tip, those machines don't calculate accurately how many calories you are burning while working on them either.
No at 16 level resistance you can go 70 to 80 cycles per minute or whatever yours does to do that. I fluctuate around 70 though and do spurts of up to 120 for a minute every 5 or 10 minutes. I'm not exactly a smaller guy either. I'm not all muscle, but not all fat.
Awesome video, Steven, just what I was looking for. I guess the hard part is monitoring your diet and making sure you're eating enough to keep from losing too much muscle, but not so much that your body stores the excess into fat. Do you recommend seeing a dietician so they can calculate out what your caloric intake should be (as well as how much of those are coming from carbohydrates, fats, and protein)? Nutrition seems to be the key factor in any exercise program to gain the results you want.
nayfeh - u should do lifting before cardio jogging because lifting takes alot of energy, if u was knackered cos u been running - u simply wont have the energy to lift therefor be in danger of dropping the weight and injuring urself, lift weights first - then jog, cos when u run out of energy jogging u can just stop, weights would be dangerous if u ran out of energy.
if u want to build muscle quick do u do heavy weight and small reps or light weight and alot of reps...and what if u just want to get cut and not big?
I don't know about your building muscle question, but to be "cut" you need to lose body fat. That's all it is. Getting around or below 10% body fat is what you're probably looking for.

I hear about carb cycling. so i was wondering, if on my cardio days I eat only veggies as a source of carbs (also lots of meats), will I be in risk of losing proteins from muscle

Since you're trying to lose weight, skip the protein shake and have a small carbohydrate drink like Gatorade after your workoout. Your normal diet supplies enough protein for muscle growth.

vue084783 2 years ago
Intensity is the key to training frequency so if you're not training too intensely, yes you can train a muscle every day. Ex-push-ups are not that intense % can be done every day. If you notice your strength & energy decreasing then allow a day of rest OR you could train every day but train different muscle groups. Either weight training schedule will not affect your weight loss. The most important things for weight loss are consistent good eating and consistent cardio!
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
do you have to do cardio the same day you do lifting? can you do one day weight lifting, the next day cardio?
vue084783 2 years ago
Hey Steve, I'm an 18 year old female, trying to lose some weight. Right now, I'm on a reduced calorie diet, and I lift at the gym for an hour in the morning, and then run 3-4 miles in the afternoon, everyday. I don't want to give up running everyday, but I've heard from some of my friends that lifting everyday is not good for you. Should I switch to every other day, for lifting, instead? How will that affect my weight loss, too?

It depends on how much weight you want to lose. 30 minutes of walking 3 times a week is a good start.
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
how often should i cardio a week ? coz i do weights pretty often and normally after i do weights i have no energy for running.
lucasleezong23 2 years ago
so right now i plan to lose 1 pound of fat a week while maintaining muscle i have by doing 2-3mins cardio warm up, bodyweight training for the specific muscle of the day, then 20-30min skipping rope cardio. my caloric intake is limited to 4-5meals at around a total of 1600 calories with very little fat, no simple carbs, only some complex carbs and high lean protein. do you think this will be enough to maintain the muscle? i don't mind losing fat slow/fast but keeping muscle is priority 1.
Bobobearx 2 years ago
Sure, do your cardio after you lift. I do. It will not make any difference. If you want faster fat loss then just either decrease the quantity of the food you normally eat or improve the quality, meaning lower fat and sugar content. OR no fast foods, no sweetened drinks, no desserts. It's easy to cut calories without having to sacrifice. And you can still build muscle while losing fat!
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
hey im trying to lose my stomache and get bigger at the same time. I hear its not good to do cardio after lifting because it hurts your gains. I dont want to have to do my cardio on seperate days do u have any advice?
chapemee 2 years ago
so i should workout and then do cardio?
MARRBENNN 2 years ago
It might be muscle mass depending on how long and hard you've been lifting. But if it's a lot of weight it's probably fat. Check your eating (quantity & quality,) be consistent with your cardio and then be patient. If you're still gaining weight it means you're not creating a calorie deficit.
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
So if I am weight training, doing 20-30 mins. of cardio every day, and watching what I eat for the most part, why am I not losing weight?...I seem to be gaining weight!...I keep telling myself it's muscle mass, I just don't know for sure

If you're not eating less than 2000 calories that's ok BUT you then have to do cardio! The more you do and the longer you do it, the better. 30 mintues - 5 days a week would be great. This will help burn extra calories.
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago

Yes but remember muscles come from lifting weights! That means you have to lift on a regular basis.
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
Hey steve I'm starting cardio in meanwhile so should I eat before cardio so I dont lose my muscle mass
ajjoeultimate 3 years ago
Eating carb (sweet) foods before you workout will cause a rise in insulin. This will blunt fat-burning.
Take a black-coffee, no milk or sugar. This will give you a pep and set up your hormones for increased fat-burning.
Taking a little protein will help preserve muscle, and has been shown in studies to help improve fat-burning.
(Take Whey, 10grams maximum with water about 30-minutes before exercising).
For more info, look up Jim Stoppani, he is a PhD in exercise physiology.
bullybasher2000 3 years ago
Be sure to keep your total calorie intake below the total amount of calories you burn. You will lose weight.
Follow the advice above and you will preserve muscle too.
bullybasher2000 3 years ago
It makes no difference when you eat. It will not effect the effectiveness of your cardio!

If you cut up everything on your plate (except the veggies or fruit) and left 4-5 pieces of food on the plate, meaning you didn't eat them, you would eat fewer calories. If you're eating a sandwich, don't take the last 4 bites to finish it.

the part were he says muscle is gained by lifting and not eating isn't correct, your diet is your main source of growth,i know because i wasted lots of time last year eating like shit and working out hard, I am on a good diet now and gaining size like mad, this guy is correct about pretty much everything, but he IS wrong about that
zodials 3 years ago
yeah but if u eat and eat and eat and do no weights r u gona grow muscle???? no. building muscle is the function of lifting he isnt sayin eating is not important he is just sayin that lifting is the tool which starts growth. maybe u just interpreted it wrongly, diet is vital but if everyone just ate well and grew muscle then we cud sit on our asses lol

Think about it....2 identical guys.
Guy 'A' only work's-out and does not eat anything.
Guy 'B' eats a balanced diet with a slight calorie surplus but does not work out.
After 1 week,
Guy A is going to be weaker.
Guy B is going to be stronger.
Nutrition plays a bigger part in muscle than exercise. I would say it's 60% nutrition, 40% exercise.
bullybasher2000 3 years ago
ghmmm that example isnt accurate thou coz ofcourse guy b will b stronger if guy A doesnt eat anything lol. the fact of the matter is its all up to thew individual some people can get away with shit nutrition but work out excessively, its a non stop argument these days you just have to do wat works for u
abcdletsplay 3 years ago
you can't get stronger just by eating..so how can that possibly be true
Jda4160 2 years ago
It means Guy B is going to be stronger than Guy A. This is how it is true.
There is another point too; If you want to lose weight, the biggest factor is how much you eat because exercise is inefficient.
If you eat 1 doughnut, it takes about 1 minute to eat.
If you try to excercise it off, it takes about 10 minutes.
So eating is a bigger factor than excerise when it comes to weight loss and weight gain. Better to leave that doughnut alone.

KaseyAkira 4 years ago
Most notably, cardio gives rise to cortisol, a catabolic hormone. Cortisol levels rise significantly with long, repetitive work like running. Also, the excessive eccentric movements in treadmill work contribute significantly to muscle loss. There are other reasons, but my 500 char limit stops me from listing them.
20 to 30 minutes of cardio, 2 to 3 times a week, is acceptable to gain some aerobic benefit without significant catabolism.
KaseyAkira 4 years ago
Muscle is gained through eating as much as it is through lifting. Diet should take priority over exercise when designing a program.
Finally, for "basic cardio" - the strengthening of the heart and lungs to get oxygenated blood to working muscles - weight lifting is all that is required. I rarely design programs with any treadmill work for beginners, as the weights do plenty.
KaseyAkira 4 years ago
Are you really talking about a program where one would want to lose body fat?
monaya 4 years ago
Yes, and there is a far better way to lose fat than running hours on a treadmill. I try to be polite so I wont post the link here, but email or msg me, and I'll give you the link to some articles I've written on the subject. You CAN lose fat quicker by walking than by running.

Nayfeh 4 years ago
nayfeh - u should do lifting before cardio jogging because lifting takes alot of energy, if u was knackered cos u been running - u simply wont have the energy to lift therefor be in danger of dropping the weight and injuring urself, lift weights first - then jog, cos when u run out of energy jogging u can just stop, weights would be dangerous if u ran out of energy.
