Translating from native language to targeted language

The way I did it was to keep making stories and talking to myself in my head. So when I do an action like moving a cup onto the table, I will say what I'm doing in my target language, but in my head. I'll keep doing it until it becomes automatic to say everything. "This is a cat, the cat is big, and he hasn't moved for 2 minutes".

In addition, I will block out English and if I don't know a word, I will use many words to describe and then ask someone how to say english X in target language

Great video Moses. I've been at Japanese every day for the past 10 months or so. I understand a LOT and can read a lot...but my output is just horrible. I know a lot of the intermediate grammar if I read it, but outputting is just next to absolute 0. How can I, this far in, understand quite a bit in both written and spoken Japanese, but can't produce hardly anything? Is that an issue? Do I just need more time?

so just use what you learned and don't try to construct too many of your own sentences? this video is very confusing to me. you're clearly fluent in chinese --- when you think about what you're going to say in chinese you just think in chinese right? you dream in chinese sometimes too, right? is this a result of many hours of reading, listening, studying etc to chinese that you now think in chinese?

Sorry for making you confused. I guess I should've mentioned also that after time you will start thinking in the targeted language. I'm mainly giving advice to beginners here.
