I think Amy's mother faked the death, it's the most obvious solution. The local deputy yupee? He's probably in on it too. Cops lie, they're human too. I'd fake my own death, along with my daughter's, to get away from psychopathic Paul. Come on people, think!

The big twist is that, when Russell arrives, he discovers that Samantha is still breathing and secretly suffocates her because of Sam’s earlier affair with Will. His crime is eventually discovered and he’s brought to justice. Dave Annable verified the events of this ending in October 2006.

I hate their apparently planned ending. Why would they have the episode saying Amy died and then after it gets canceled they say well actually Amy didn't die she shoots her mom? Like come on that's so dumb.

No, there was nothing shot beyond this. There were 4 eps (1995-1998) that were shot but not aired in the US (they were aired in Australia though and now thankfully online), but the last 9 eps don't exist anywhere.
The daughter they gave up.Amy would shoot Sam by accident. Craig would find her dying body and call his father for help. When arriving to the scene, his father would realize Sam was still breathing and finish the job in order to help his son's political career.
It was a real shame not to have a proper ending for this series. When a Brazilian network broadcasted again the episodes, they revealed that it was Craig's father who murdered Sam.

I'm pset the show was cancelled, but at least there were 13 great episodes and we know the ending somewhat.
still sad that they killed sam though and that will/sam and carla/aaron didnt end together.

I think there's a bit more: the shot didn't actually kill sam. craig's dad discovered sam shot, but still alive, and strangled her or something.

I really liked the show, but I think the big secreg (how sam died) was kind of a letdown. it was built up too much to have such a simple ending.
