@roflmewaffles well it is simple really, a quad core phenom II and a 4850 is overkill, there is no media content that will even come close to maxing out that hardware. the hardware requirements to run 1080p flash video with solid performance (the most processing intensive task a HTPC will encounter) will only use a fraction of that hardware. a d525 desktop ion motherboard would be more than enough, at the fraction of the cost, running at about 40 watts at a fraction of the cost would be better.
Who cares if it's too much, if he has the money and wants to spend it on this then good for him. Personally I also use my HTPC (e8400, 4gb RAM, ASUS P5Q PRO, 1GB HD4870) for gaming with friends on my nice 50" HDTV.
(btw I had all the parts left over when I upgraded my gaming build so that is why my HTPC is overkill lol)
Hey Zeebobnz! Nice build ! good work! Next time you build a htpc make build a intel just for me! Haha and If its a htpc use the evga h55 mobo's I use them all the time in my customer builds
Since you already own 3! Logitech MX Revolution, you really needed!? to buy another? why not use one of the other ones for this... :S or just use the pad on the keyboard..
Question: I too am looking to build my first HTPC....why did you decide to not only get a Radeon 4850, but an Asus sound card as well? This is my dillema....I thought the 4850 does HDMI output.....so do you really need a seperate sound card?
wow dude, its a gaming/htpc computer, you better be doing PURE HD stuff EVEN THE DESKTOP SHOULD BE MAX AT HD lol and do some gaming too...its both for price of one, your very lucky
"AMD Phenom 9950 Quad-Core Black Edition" overkill lol im using a 9600 with 8gb of DDR2 800, ASUS XONAR D2X and a 9800GTX+ 512mb and I can run every game in WINE (Linux user) and compile applications at extreme speeds, and I even find myself running over a hundred applications at once without raising the CPU above 25%, ALSO I use it as a server and a desktop. why the hell would you buy anything better? lol
dude this is even better then what im using as a gaming rig. only i got a msi 790x mobo and a amd athlon x2 65 5200+ and dont have the tv tuner and soundcard this is by far not a htcp:P
I am looking to build something like this to put under my TV, with all those fans, is it not pretty noisy? also what do you do for a living, you have far too much money!
i got the 4670 1 gig version it needs some better cooling i alsogot that same mobo i believe i got a dual core becuase it was cheaper and ive herd some of over clocked it to 3.5 on air.....its a x2 sioomthign cant remeber
i would go with vista cuz its better for runing movies and u get dx 10.1 if u ever want to play games but i woud go for 4 gb of ram or more but i would go with the EVGA GeForce 9800 GT or the XFX GeForce 9800 GT
This guy is a shit talker, I have Vista & it caches up to 1.4gb most of the time, meaning it will never go over 2gb, that was running many addon services, even when I had a ridiculous amount of programs running, never over 1.5gb.
If I was building a new HTCP I would get one of those NVIDIA motherboards with integrated GPU's and use hybird SLI, that is power efficient & powerful for <2005 games & of course media playback, you also get Cuda.
No Wifi? The souncard doesnt do True HD, and you dont mention a blueray player WTF spending that kind of cash you would think playing Lossless HD audion would be a priority, but I love that case..
I've always been an Intel guy but I was able to get the Motherboard, CPU and graphics card real cheap. I'm glad I did go with the AMD because it really is an awesome CPU.
Complete overkill for an HTPC, even by today's standards.

with that tv tuner can u still use on demand with time warner

@roflmewaffles granted that this was made in 2008, but there were low power/cost solution existing even then.

If you got a better video card you didn't need to buy that sound card. Passthrough audio lossless is available in the better video cards.

The components are not really "htpc-ish". More like a gaming pc for me. I say overkill

You better be watching Full HD movies with that beast
Cheburashka94 2 years ago
Yeah, AT LEAST 1080p :). This beast is way too powerful for a HTPC. What's with the 700m PSU? You don't even need a 500 or even a 400!
And why they uber CPU? Even the cheapest desktop Intel dual cores will do you fine.
Just madness! Fantastic yes, but way too much power for JUST TV/Movies/Music.
Gotta have a good sound card though, most important thing besides the TV :-) (and speakers).
