"Maid" and "maiden" both mean an unmarried girl/virgin, so it's not a bad translation. However, "maiden" probably sounds better to us since most people think of servants when they hear "maid".

The "maid" implies she is a "servant girl of God" rather than a "virgin." Joan of Arc is called the "maid of Orleans" and her home is called Domremy- the maid, or Domremy La Pucelle. So when maid is used, it's double meaning, she serves God, and if faithful to Him.

Translation is an art, not a science. It's not a perfect A=B thing...

You actually see it translated both ways, though Maid is overwhelmingly the choice made. As for maid and maiden, they are almost the same word. You really lose nothing either way you go, except that Maid of Orleans is the standard. I see your point about the connotation of serving god, _but_ maiden has been used in the same fashion as maid in the context of a servant. Anyway, I was defending the use of "maid" due to its meaning despite the modern image of a "maid".
