@nanette096 You shouldn't need any spacers, I don't have one. Your dealer should set up the cartridge so all you need to do is balance the tonearm as in the video. Rega say that spacers are only necessary when Rega arms are used on non-Rega decks. This is a moot point - I think my 2M Blue would have been better off with one, but the Goldring is about the same size and tracking weight as Rega's own cartridges, which need no VTA adjustment whatever on Rega arms.
Hi Mark. If you had a bit if groove less vinyl at the end of the record close to the spindle could you set anti-skate at that position or would you need a blank bit of vinyl in the centre of the record?
@EdWood2006 I know you meant anti skate. A stylus will be knackered by placing it on a CD and anyway it won't be the right thickness to make a correct judgement! Use the record player manufacturer's recommendation for anti skate if you don't have a disk. The instructions will tell you that e.g. for a cart with a tracking weight of 1.75g set a-skate to 1.75 also. Some players like the Rega's have a push-pull thing, others have dial and still others have a weight hanging from wire to adjust.
@nondescriptman Just move the counterweight along its stub until it doesn't tilt up or down. You must make sure the bias slider is at zero - all the way out - and the tracking dial is at zero. Only when the arm is floating, do you set the tracking and anti-skating (bias) to the same values - 1.75g in your case. Btw on the distortion issue, my old P3 couldn't handle an LP like Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert. Distorted like mad. The P5/1042 plays it superbly, as long as the stylus is clear of fluff!
Tank, if I am right the leads you have are called RCA phonos. I have not ever had a PS3 so don't know what they look like, but I would say that's what they are. You MUST plug them into an amplifier and then the amp is plugged into speakers. There may be a second hand dealer near you who can sort you out with amp/speakers cheaply. DON'T try to hardwire the TT straight to speakers.
Ok i just found a oldish record player its has a white cord and a black cord simila to the ones for like a ps3 but black and white were do i put this things and i dont have the tuner or whut ever the thing that u plug it into is and i just need to huck up speaker how can i do that
@SonofBrummieDarkness You need to check the instruction sheet that comes with the cart. It is sometimes called downforce or tracking weight. Don't confuse with the weight of the cart itself which is quoted in the specs list as that will be much heavier! As a guide, MM carts often track at between 1.5 and 2g - many popular ones including those from Goldring & Rega are 1.75g. MC's are often heavier than this. The Ortofon Rondo Red is about 2.1g IIRC.
Thanks for the reply, I am just wondering as in your video I see the tonearm floating a short distance from the armrest, where as mine goes straight to the armrest, no float, regardless of anti skating or not.
The tonearm is level when compared to the platter, its just that it doesn't stay put, could it be that the turntable is not 100% level?
@sonicmainliner It's OK for the tonearm to move laterally, but not to point up or down. It should be level. The point is the downforce that is exerted onto the record. Lateral swing will be taken care of when the anti-skating bias is set.
Hello, thanks for the helpful video dear ! I setup my RB301 counterweight in a wrong manner ! oops ! Now, thanks to your video, I started from scratch, put the counterweight so the arm could float in the air without any pressure. Then I setup the stylus pressure to 1.75grs as stated for a Rega Elys 2 cartridge... Then I set the anti-skating and now it's ok ! Thank you again. I'm using a NAIM AUDIO system, Focal Chorus 826V, Rega P3-24 + Elys 2 + TT PSU. Eric, Belgium.
@MrToonfish I have a P3 - 24 with an Elys 2 stylus and noticed distortion at the end of the record. The Rega manual doesn't say anything the antiscating setting? So I have set the antiscating according to the stylus pressure (1,75) as some people say on the internet. The counterweight is pretty much in the middle. After adjusting the antiscating from 2+ to aprox 1,75, I noticed that noise dissapeared at the end of the record.
What is the setting of your antiscating and counterweight?
@6tryphon6 The Rega manual does mention anti-skating (also known as bias). The control is a slider switch which I have pulled out just under quarter way along its trail. The counterweight position will vary depending on how heavy the cartridge is. Just make sure that when the tracking dial is at zero and the bias (a/skating) slider is all the way out, the arm "floats" - ie it neither points up nor down. (cont'd)...
@6tryphon6 (cont) If the arm and cart are set up correctly, the distortion is more like caused by the condition of the records. I have some that distort a fair bit and others that don't at all. Give them a clean (properly! with a proprietary cleaner like the Disco Antistat). Hopefully your dealer fitted the cart and you haven't fiddled with it, but a poorly aligned cart might distort a bit. Rega provide a card protractor and instructions, but don't attempt it! Not a job for the uninitiated!
It may have been shot in out-of-focus, shake-til-ya-puke cam, but this politely spoken Englishman has just solved a problem that I've been struggling with for months. Thanks! Well worth the journey...
good commentary BUT....get the camera working right so its nice to watch or get someone to shoot it for you who has a steady hand....esp for the effort you've gone too. I think your camera was partly zoomed in hence the macro not working right.
Nice video, Mark. I was going mental because I couldn't figure out how to set my new cartridge up properly to the stated tracking etc. Then I watched your video and realised that my counterweight was wrong. A slight movement and instant gratification! Cheers.
I have a record player. I bought a new needle, and when I place a record disk on the dish. Plays, put the needle on, and I can hear less sound of music. I plugged on left and right connections, and on Phono mode. The speakers was quiet and no sound off from the Record Player. I can hear little bit on the record player.
If you don't know this one. U don't have to answer it:) Thanks ;)
maybe a stupid question but how do I set up the rubber band under the disc on my denon 350. I disasembled it to transport it and the band just fell when I lifted the disc. not sure where it came from exactly...
hi, good vid, I'm very interested about the record used for the anti-skating test. what is it and are hey available still if they are where can i get one??? judging by the other tracks i presume thare are L/R channel tests @ different frequencies ect.
It was an old Decca Test Record called How To Give Yourself A Stereo Checkout, from 1967. To be honest, apart from the blank groove, the only really useful checks are the left-right and in/out of phase stereo ones. There is one for stereo balance and tonal colour, only really useful if your amp has these features - and few high end ones do. Otherwise, it's things like comparing a "live" rattle of keys with the one on the record etc.. Not to0 scientific, and not too helpful. Rather fun though!
@nost78 you can use blank space on records. I have a ton of records that are one sided 12" 45 singles, just use them. you can get them for cheap at a crap record store
No probs audioh! Though since I made that video I have upgraded by adding a Creek OBH 15 phono stage and swapping the cart for a Goldring 1042. YOu can hear the results elsewhere on my channel. The Jelco tonearms have had good reviews in the UK hi fi magazines. I recall that they are particularly good with Avid turntables.
The tonearm balancing instructions provided with the Garrard SL95B has had me scratching my head for years. I finally get it. THANK YOU - FANTASTIC JOB. PS. Long live Winston Churchill.
Ronald, that would all depend on the other equipment you are using it with. I have had a letter published in October's HiFi World Magazine about a similar topic. If you live in the UK you can buy this in the shops (try WH Smith) it's the latest. But the writers of that mag are used to hearing stuff at least 10 times the value of mine so they are a little jaded when it comes to cheaper stuff! So if you tell me what TT, cartridge and amp anyway, I will do my best to help.
I picked up a Parasound Phono Pre-amp and got a copy of Miles Davis "Sketch of Spain" 180Gram re-master and it sounds great, I am anxious to get a Shure M97xE Phono Cartridge and see how it sounds, it sounds great righ now with a M92E Phono Cartridge.
That wouldn't have helped so much in this case, as I had to get in so close, from a few different angles. Also I think my camera must use a different size format from iMovie, as the picture is a fraction "taller" on the camera before it gets imported into a project. You would have seen me sliding the counterweight onto the stub at the back of the arm were it not for this sad fact.

EdWood2006 5 months ago
@EdWood2006 No, as the playout groove of a record is not groove-less. Just set the anti skate to the same weight as your cartridge tracking weight.

Thanks for the video, I try to level the tonearm, but it keeps swinging to the armrest, I can't get it to "float" in one position.
I do this without setting pressure, and tried it with antiskating to full and off and midway, but the same thing happens. Any ideas as to why?
Cheers
