  • It's neat to hear the songwriter sing her own song!!!!!!!!!!

  • Very nice. Like the harmonies.

  • Ahh, so much talent.

  • A similar but clearly different version is also posted on youtube. That's the one on Hurried Life. This appears to be later and a bit more similar to the Associations version.

  • Was she singing in the chorus on the Association's version?

  • easily one of the greatest top 20 songs of the 1960's

  • This almost sounds like Carole King. I never knew, until recently, that there was a version before The Association's.

  • Awesome demo! I wish the Association would have kept the song in the same key as this demo!

  • Hmm, Looks like the discs need some of My polish!

  • Ruthann, thanks for writing this pretty song.

  • She made lots of good money but not as much as she might have made if she hadn't been ripped off for half the publishing...

  • @windya12003

This may have been a result of her not knowing that she could have started her own publishing company back then. Now-a-days if a publisher only wants to pay you a percentage of your half of the publishing, then they are trying to rip you off. Publishing should always be a 50-50 deal. I would imagine she mad gobs of money from her part of the radio royalties; which no publisher can touch. If there was ever anyone who could complain about a bad publishing deal, it would be George...

Harrison of The Beatles. His percentage for any of his songs was less than 1%. I wouldn't want that deal; even if it meant getting a song out there.

  • Do you think she made some nice dough from this? Or did she get ripped like so many others in the 60s?

  • I really like Ruthann's demo; I sure wish the album version had the vocal harmony at the end of the song - to me, it makes a big difference!

  • Just to add to the confusion: I disagree about this being the same version as is on her album.

However, it MIGHT be that version with extra stuff dubbed on. The guitar solo here is certainly NOT on the version I have. The vocals sound different, but that could be down to production at the dubbing stage.

  • Very folksy, more soothing compared to the Association's version, which was more light pop.

reminds me of James Taylor and Peter, Paul and Mary.

  • wow, I know a completely different album version than this one. so good to hear this, I've always preferred her own version over the "the association" one..

    thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you for the information!

  • this is the same version that came out on her album. if you live in the los angeles area you should keep an eye out for her. she occasionally plays around town and is worth seeing.

  • Thank you for the information!

Regrettably I don't live in US.

  • This is great, but I had read somewhere that she wrote the song in 3/4 time?! This is not in that meter.

  • I was SO hoping this would be that supposed 3/4 version that you're referring to(I read about it also,in the billboard book of #1 hits).Frankly though,I don't see how you could put this song into 3/4 time without it sounding really awkward, perhaps the story was apocryphal.
