I've been working on 2 handed bass for a short while, and I wanted to know if you have any tips for getting a better sound out of my right hand playing?
Like are you pressing into the strings or striking them?
@TJInfinat The right hand is simply "hammering" on the string hard enough to generate a tone. Time and experience are what cleaned up my right hand. There are also books of exercises designed to develop the two-handed tapping technique.
The bass is a Carvin LB70 PW (Piezo pickups, tho I never use them, Alnico Humbucker at the bridge, (personally, not my favorite pickup, I like the matched H50 humbuckers on the bass I use in some of the other videos) and H50 humbucker at the neck. The bass ran direct into a Roland VS1880 recording unit. I inserted a stock "compressor/Limiter" into the sound, dialed in a bit of reverb and chorus (both stock in the machine... I'm not much of an effect tweaker. )
When I mastered the recording down to 2 track, I inserted another "eq" program into the signal path to help smooth out the levels and get maximum gain without distortion.
I imported that audio over the video so that it'd sound better than a dang video cam condenser mic.
That's pretty much it. It's how I've done the sound capture for all my videos. It's kinda a pain in the butt to line the video and audio up, but it's worth it in the end.
It sure woth it in the end. Thanks for all that information. I'm thinking over buying one of those all-in-one consoles, like tascam 2488neo or the Roland VS1880 for acoustic recordings. but a little bit confused. The Tascam is closer to my budget but I read so many negative reviews about it I don't think it's a good idea. Are you happy with your Roland?
Actually, I am really happy with it. Sure, it's not as "in-depth" as a guy can get with Logic or Protools or some other huge computer based software, but if you have a quality sound to capture in the first place, it really doesn't matter how many bells and whistles are on the thing. I'm sure you could find one used for a grand or less. I did score the extra effects card for mine so that I can run 4 effects at a time. I did feel just a bit limited with 2.
The audio was recorded directly into a digital recorder as I played for the video. I imported the clean audio over the video so that it wouldn't have that "vid-cam condenser mic" kind of sound. Other than that, it's years of playing "hammer-on" style until it comes out cleanly.
Thanks, patrick. The disney was a random inspired thing when I was first trying to learn it. I kept screwing up that section, and I blew it as usual but found that little nugget.
no, I scripted them out so that I could land the walk and the melody at the same time and have a consistent arrangement. I had quite a time getting my fingers to stay with the melody as I had to shift from the G7 back to the CM7 in the 3rd and 4th measure of that walk.. it was a pretty weird feeling alternation and shift.
If I wasn't a drummer, I definitely would be a bass player, simply because of these things you do... If somebody showed me 10 years ago, that bass is not only for playing one low note at a time, I wouldn't think much which instrument to choose! I also posted one song by Wooten on Youtube, but it's nowhere that good, as you do! ;) Well, I did mentioned I'm a drummer, didn't I?!:))) Again, only one word: BRAVO!!! Is it your own composition? I reckon it is, as I never heard Wooten playing it! ;)
Hey, jazz, thanx for the view and the comment. This is pretty much my own arrangement. It's based on an arrangement I used to do with a jazz group here in Pueblo. I messed with it for about a year before it was really ready to go. As for original stuff, I'm still working on something that really "speaks with my own voice."
Yeah, still no piezos... they just don't translate to the tapping style.. at least not for my ears. As far as the humbucker... well.. heck, I don't know if I'm running it single coil or split. The little switch is in the "up" position, which gives it a warmer sound. Other than that, it's an even split between the bridge and neck pickup.
This is EVER-SO-AMAZING just to listen to, let alone watch you play. The ending just blows my mind and makes me grab my bass, seriously wishing to imitate the way you play. What's your setup, because I love the sound you're pullin'!
p.s.: I commented on this yesterday, but I don't know WHAT happened - when I'd hit post comment, I wouldn't have the option of editing my comment [as though it posted], but I had the option of hitting the 'post comment' button again.

I dial in some reverb and chorus, and I add in some compression as an inserted effect. My guess is, since Roland and Boss are the same folks, that a couple of foot pedals would get any sound pretty close to this.
I also meant to mention.. I record the audio separate from the video. Then, I import the pure audio from the Roland unit over the top of the video. This gives me the clean sound of the direct audio without the hassle of room reverb, ringing phones, extra noise, cats running, or traffic on the street outside. It makes it sound nice and clean.
To me, any time a person spends with their instrument is anything but a waste, even when we hit those frustrating "ruts"... which I've been in for a while. Keep the faith, keep the practice time, and keep the joy in what you do. Sometimes the learning comes quickly, sometimes it is painful, but it's always valuable.
Thanx. It took me a while to get used to how bright the Alnico pickup is in this one, but it translated really well to this tune. Thanks for watching, and for the comment.
Amazing, this is one of the coolest versions of this song that I've heard.

is it tuned to a d g c sounds some tenor
alpdev123 2 years ago
no, that's the standard tuning e a d g. The brightness of that bass and the elixer strings may be a bit deceptive. Thank you for watching.
