  • I doesn't matter if Eddie didn't invent it. He popularized it and probably one of the best tappers out there.

  • I started playing guitar after I heard Avenged Sevenfold.

  • @NachoAmigo97 me too lol

  • @kmkstu420 What's there best song? I've never heard them before.

  • thats called palming, the one where you hold the pick like that, thats one basic magic trick you can do that with a coin or whatever you want, xD lol

  • Stanley Jordan

  • eddie never claimed tht he invented it. you dick

  • SHUT UP !!!!! DICK EDDIE VAN HALEN WAS THE SHIT IS THE SHIT AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE SHIT.

  • suck my balls

  • I never heard anything like that hammer on stuff in Erruption before that. The arpeggiated melodic pattern. The brown sound. that tone....the mxr phase 90 effect. Eddie never claimed he invented it. But Eddie was the first to play hammer ons whilst wearing pink bunny slippers, stripped knicker shorts and jumping and doing knee slides while drinking and partying on stage...loud!

  • Stece Hackett from Genesis can be seen doing finger tapping in 1973 live video of "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight", here on you tube. Here: /watch?v=W5DdqY5nrm4 can be seen at 3:30 and heard in many other occasions

  • @MagellanOfBass I always bring up Steve Hackett whenever anyone tries to claim that Eddie invented tapping. I'm pretty sure that Steve uses his pick to "tap" the string, but it's the same idea. Both Eddie and Steve are great guitarists, but it's not right to give credit where it is not due. It's true that Eddie popularized it, because Genesis wasn't nearly as popular as Van Halen, and Steve didn't let tapping take over his style - he has lots of strange guitar techniques in his arsenal.

  • I have never heard him once claim that. He openly states he didnt but all he did was make it more popular.

  • you talk too much man...

  • i use my thumb and pinky to pick.. n it looks cool

  • i have the same guitar in red !

  • @sordidserpent good for you the guitar's a piece of shit.

  • this video, will not teach you anything usable

  • dude, my video would be over after 20 seconds :P

    just sayin' people understands it...

  • you are awesome

  • dude you suck at finger taping

  • WOW u dont know how to tap

  • ok...im pretty sure that van halen POPULARIZED tapping but he wasnt the first to do it because randy rhodes DID do it before him and so did yngwie malmesteen did it then too and emmett chapman a fucking jazz guitarist tapped with both hands in 1965 freakin idiots

  • @wampcat70 Agreed, in fact, Paganini used to do some cool tapping on his violin, tapping actuallt came from classical music, but Eddie rules anyway

  • even though i watched this video pretty late at night and i was WIDE awake, your voice makes me fall asleep on my keyboard

  • u remind me somehow of jason mewes in the jay and silent bob thing . nice lessons btw

  • He didnt claim to invent it. He said he saw jimmy page do it and thought it was really cool. :)

  • @petie58 What he really said was that he liked Jimmy Page's use of pull-off licks that end on an open string, and wanted to find a way to do similar licks higher on the neck, so he started tapping to accomplish that goal. He actually may have "invented" it for himself, but of course that doesn't mean others didn't invent it before him-people were doing it extensively before Eddie was born-he was simply unaware of them, and figured it out on his own, as they did.

  • We know that Eddie didn't actually invent tapping, he was just the first one to actually get good enough at it to show it's full potential.

  • @ElSunDanceKid Eddie gets the credit because Van Halen sold so many records to people (me included) that were unaware of other tappers-not because he was the first to get good enough to "show it's full potential." He's never showed it's full potential-for one thing, he rarely employs multiple right hand fingers-try Emmett Chapman, Jennifer Batten and others if you want more of tapping's "full potential".

  • Angus young anybody?

  • how loud does the amp have to be ?

  • Awesome tip.

  • Thanks, really simple to do now : )

  • keep going, ur helping people, and u know it

  • lol

  • nice jorts fuckface!!! LOL

  • wow this guys an idiot. EVH has NEVER claimed that he invented finger tapping. Ppl say hey man how did u invent finger tapping and then he goes no man allan holendsworth did it first but then i just more into it and "kinda took it and ran with it". He also says that jimmy page did this hammer on riff in the solo for heartbreaker 71 live and eddie said wat if i put my finger as a nut and its like havin an extra finger. and then yea

  • is it kind of a Coperfield show?

i really thought he was gonna show some exercises or riffs..

  • make some videos and show us! if your cousin is so GODLY, make a video showing his skill. you know, that's kinda like what YouTube is for. not whining away on other people's videos about something you can't do anything about. look at him, he's playing guitar. you're sitting on your ass on youtube complaining.

  • honestly at first. I was like....m......... you know, you terms are very very laymans terms... but now. I like it. Simple. Easy. I've been playing for 12 years.. nice man. Good job.

  • I love your way of explaining how to hold the pick with your second finger while tapping with first finger. great job

  • EVH popularized it in rock long before hammett, but neither of them invented it. The technique of tapping goes back a long time before either of them.

  • Idiot...van halen is much better then kirk hammett

  • you guys are idiots metallica one came out before eruption so stop putting my other comment as a negative comment

  • kirk hammett doesnt have shit on EVH. he may have done it in a song before eddie but if you wanna get technical... Randy Rhodes was doing tapping before both of them

  • and their both better then u Bernier94

  • u dont know nothing carguy

u really dont know what ur fuckingn talking about asshole VH came out much earlier that metallica ass

  • thats why its called FINGER TAPPING LESSON you moron

  • are you at ALLEGRO?

  • der labert zu viel!

  • lmfao i hav the same guitar too lol

  • Finger Tapping for dummies

    good comedy :

  • you take way too long

  • duude i have the same guitar :P

  • i use my first and second fingers on my fretting hand and my thumb to tap on my strumming hand, and it works.. is this wrong?

  • not reaallyy,

if it works, and sounds alright it isn't really wrong

whatever works for you, there isn't really rules

  • from 2:17 to 2:36 it sounds like a phone when he taps.XD

  • clear and simple basic explanation

  • eddie didnt invent it but he was the first guitarist to use it extensively in a lot of his material, therfor the myth comes that he "invented" it, really he just popularised it by using it extensively

  • yep that's true, cause if you see the very first discs of genesis, the mr steve hackett used it first...and he sayd that the first person who ever used tapping before, was johan sebastian bach (not the singer -.-")... imagine that, tapping in a violin O_O...

  • @logeybear5150 I Disagree dude, i think that the finger tapping that we have today, with that speed and aggression and specific sound was invented by Eddie Van Halen, certainly great guitar musicians Like Brian May, Billy Gibbons, Ritchie Blackmore did the both or single hand tapping, but that was something way different then the one that was introduced by Eddie in late 70. As Eddie says he picked it up from Page who did the heavy pull offs on E scale with one hand. 4 me it comes from EVH.

  • @MrAppolo777 yeah, i see what you mean, eddies interpretation of it is basically the root from which most tapping techniques come from today, so in a way he did invent the "modern" tapping technique if you get what i mean

  • @logeybear5150 Exactly, actually "tapping" (it wasn’t called that way in those days) is pretty old technique, Jazz musicians, in times of Django Reinhardt used to do slow motional tapping(pull offs) with both hands that was called the Piano Playing (playing guitar like on piano) But style that we dig, which is used by Steve Vai, Satriani, Gilbert and other Monsters certainly comes from Eddie. EVH is the best!!!

  • @MrAppolo777 he is my favourite guitar player of all time, i picked the damn thing up because of him in the first place

  • @logeybear5150 He's a genius, i like many great guitar musicians, but Eddie is just a different dimension, he is my reason of playing 2.

  • wtf at the end, but good tutorial, it really helped. (Y)

  • why get mad at this guy for repeating what evh said about inventing the tapping

  • That trick how to hold the pick I always hold it, I did not notice it myselt that I was doing that I started to notice that when i pressed it to hard and my finger started to hurt xD

  • Van Halen never claimed to have invented tapping.

  • dude thanks for all these tips and lessons.

  • you have no clue what you are talking about, eddie is probably 20x better than your favorite guitarist.

  • yes dude... eddie does not suck

  • Well, then you are 20x stupier than the stupiest person I know, because what Eddie is doing is mixing together a bunch of licks and stuff made to impress people, BUT he is not making any melodic propose, he is not the best.

  • Steve Hackett of Genesis incorporated finger tapping in his guitar work long before anybody else.

ie Giant Hogweed and Firth of Fifth

However some early classical european guitarists used this technique from time to time.

By no means did evh invent anything except his own fuckin great sound and way of playing.

  • Genesis Supper's Ready is the best example for that!

  • oh my God yes, steve hackett insiprated van halen for that!!

  • great job.

  • eddie has never claimed to invent tapping

  • oh he has...on one video here he said he took inspiration from jimmy pages left hand legato, and he thought he could add one finger from his right hand...EVH INVENTED TAPPING...yup caps lock (H)

  • i've heard evh claim to have invented tapping. You can see that he knows he's lying. I don't know why he would - his guitar work is great anyway.

  • hey man ur vids are hella sweet

    thanks for the help

  • he said best known seymorebutts6t432 are u deft, o yea and leefe115, u play at churches?

  • George Lynch started finger tapin befor EVH

  • yeah but EVH

is the one that really made it famous

  • The correct term in 'Bi-Dextral Hammer-On',,tapping is when you chord with the left hand and tap w/ the right hand a whole octave higher...and Eddie did give credit to someone else he had heard

  • Is that guitar a Peavey Raptor?

  • EVH made finger tapping mega-awesome! it may not have been invented by him, but the finger tapping we use today is EVH's brainchild

  • eddie didn't invent that.

    try stan the man jordan.

  • he had his facts straight KEVIN!!!

he said that halen thinks he invented it, this is not the case as bill thoughroughly explained, many others were using it just not on a scale like eddie van did, bill nor I nor anyone was disrespecting halen, just stating that he didnt invent finger tapping,

youget your facts straight next time.

    Faggot!

  • thanks man

  • Dude, everyone was tapping back then because they saw Eddie doing it.Eddie "popularized" finger tapping, and he created a whole generation of followers in the process.Nobody knew what tapping was till Eruption came out, guitarist thought he used a synthesizer on that cause they couldnt figure how a guitar could make such a sound.Get your facts straight next time.

  • He did have his facts straight you cocksmoker. Good lesson.
