If U-vox music lacks depth then the Mariana Trench lacks depth too if you know what I mean. I love U-vox, Midge is my No 1 and I'm seeing him live soon :)
Haha he does look like ed norton but stiff like a wine connoisseur, ultravox had some good songs and some bad ones sometimes they sounded over produced and the equalization had zero bass end,not rappy but just lacked depth not lyrically ;musically like in the recording end.The finished product would've sounded more full if the bass end was a little more predominant.
@blitzspeer I think for the Quartet album you have a point. The production (by George Martin of Beatles fame IIRC) was lacking in bass. That wasn't a problem on the two previous albums or the following ones.
God, how I wishWishWISH they were coming to the States. I'd be there with bells on. I've checked their site in hopes of tour dates here but the latest date I see is in Belgium. Hope springs infernal!
Reminds me of school and one of my best friends, driving the back roads, blasting this on cassette and bellowing along with it. "From the mouths of babes and fools..." :-)
Just come across this today, been listening to Ultravox for years via greatest hits etc, I was only six when Vienna was in the charts and the Quartet Album passed me by, just bought it online after hearing this cracking track. Thanks for posting.
@BitAnBobs I agree I don't think the music is live because Chris is playing a Bass guitar in the vid but the actual bassline is a synth. For years I thought they played this when I saw the in NYC in 1983 but I think I mixed this up with 'When The Scream Subsides' which they did do on that tour. Still its cool because this is the only live vocal I've ever heard for Serenade. Great find!
Ultravox grabbed me as a wee boy way back when, and their old stuff still does years later. I have a u-vox tat on me arm, that's how much I love the style of electro they belted out. John Foxx should never of course be forgotten as the man who made the band. Yeah, there was u-vox 1 & 2. In my opinion Midge Ure took them down a dead end street, where as if Foxx hadda stuck with, they'd have gone on to amazing heights. Tho Foxx ain't doin too shabby these days. God, where's the decades gone folks?
Ingenius4t, thanks again for post this video. Every video that you post of Uvox, is a gift for everybody who loves the band. This song is awesome!!! :)
@ingenious4t Thanks for this. just got in to Ultravox. always loved synth music but never delved deeper than the track vienna really? Can you recommend an album of theirs for me. I tend to like the ballad, slower stuff most like visions... and lament. I am already buying lament.
I have a vinil U-VOX (1986) with all signatures from them, a english friend give to me when i was living in Oxford 1998. I still listen Ultravox ! They are brilliant !
Don't know how many of you are on the official ultrvox forum but there's a brilliant tribute band who do great covers of both I remember (death in the afternoon) and We stand alone! AWSOME! monument they're called. Just google ultravox tribute
sheer brilliance love this band awesome midge ure at his best a true genius of music brilliant xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
odr752, your Top 10 UV list comes close to mine, except I'd have to put "We Stand Alone" just above "Paths & Angles", shove "Passionate Reply" in there, drop anything from "U-vox" off, replace "When the Time Comes" with "White China", then move "Sleepwalk", "The Voice", and "Visions In Blue" onto it. Oh, and "Passing Stangers" absolutely needs to be there, too.
I'm a BIG fan of anything Ultravox, Mk. I or II, although I do happen to think that Rage barely squeaks past Vienna (just barely) as the best Ure-era LP. Quartet is a close third, and Lament a distant fourth. Sorry, but U-vox just doesn't do it for me. I think it's way cool that you put Paths & Angles on top. I'm working on a cover of that now.
Yess!!!... I agree with you. Maybe there are more memorable songs, but for me, my first one is "We Stand Alone"... followed by "Remember (death in the afternoon)". Of course, "Hymn" and "The Voice" were my first songs when I was young, but after hearing these again and again for more than 20 years, "We Stand Alone" have beome my personal hymn...
ha, ha, ha!!... I could tell memorable nights in the 80's with this song. My friends knew my weakness about Ultravox, so when we use to go to new wave clubs, they asked to the DJ "We Stand Alone" as a gift for me. Of course, I loosed my mind when I heard these first compases, it's deep bass sound, it's drum sequence, that beautifull and subtle first guitar notes, Billy Currie's glorious sintesizer solo... and Midge crying "That's cast upon this gigolo and gigolette" in the last compasses...
Mhhh... I suppose you mean "I Remember (death in the afternoon)". Yes, you're right too... At the beginning, "rememmber" become my favourite song after overlisten again and again "The Voice"... but later, after enjoy the entire LP, I discovered "we stand alone"... anyway, It couldn't easy to me decide between both songs...
i think its the big synth key change piece in the middle followed by the guitar exit that does it for me ,its like a big musical orgasm on the ears ,if you like.i generally listen to the whole album but skip 'YOUR NAME'
My top 10 list. 1.Vienna 2.I Remember [Death In The Afternoon] 3.We Stand Alone 4.The Thin Wall 5.All Stood Still 6.Passing Strangers 7.Cut And Run 8.Hymn 9.Stranger Within 10.Lament
Top tune from a top album. Released in the UK in the autumn of 1982, it built on the success the band had had over the proceeding eighteen months (since the Vienna single made number two).
Serenade is one of the stand-out tracks from Quartet but there's not a duff song on the album. A lot of the album was recorded at Air Studios on the Caribean island of Montserrat which was later destroyed in a volcanic eruption. Respect due.
I met the producer of "Quartet" George Martin's son the other day and although he was a child when his father produced this record with UVOX back in '82, he remembers how "funny and cool Midge, Chris and Billy were", but that "Warren" was too "seroius" for his liking.
Champion song.
