  • The perfect voice for a perfect song. "the sweetest 'oors that ere I spent, were spent among the lassies ,oh yes indeed"

  • great song

  • brilliant he is like a Scottish Tom Waits the Dundee boy!

  • Yir right! It's great to be Scottish. Jist imagine whit it would be like if we

truly had a culture that was truly celebrated by our media...

The Scots language wouldn't be denegrated - it would be celebrated.

Michael Marra and the Proclaimers - and lots more - sing unashamedly in Scots

and why not? It's our language. Burns fought for our language 250 years ago - God Bless him and all who carry his torch.

  • "A worldy race may riches chase, and richer still may fly them oh, but when at last they catch them fast their hearts can ne'er enjoy them oh" Lovely.

  • I supported Michael in Glasgow at the ABC1 Great night !

  • the definitive version as far as i'm concerned, sang from the heart in his own dialect.

  • mon the arabz...3-2 roon yez rankurz

  • Beautiful, tumbling down the centuries and as wonderful now as ever. Marra sings it as though Burns wrote it for his voice.

  • If ever there was a haunting melody this is it. Top class performance

  • Can anyone confirm the correct chrords for this song?

  • thats magic, was great that he had the wisdom, and had the grace,to take old air's,and transform them into .....pure BURNS......thanks...think he such give the fags up...

  • Strange. A year ago, you called this 'utter perfection'.

  • Cause it is, Sherlock. I just don't appreciate it being attributed to Burns.

  • @Thisnameistaken11

Actually Burns did write the lyrics excepting the title of this song, which he often did with traditional folk songs. He wrote it flushed with pride after Jean Armour gave birth to twins.

It just makes it easier for me because you are a hack.

  • @persikov1 Your mum's a hack.

And he only wrote it insofar as he put the words onto paper (more than two years before Jean Armour gave birth to twins, by the way). But it's been a Scottish drinking song for centuries and it's of unknown origin. Burns penned one of the many variations, and perhaps even added some tweaks of his own, but to say he wrote the song is simply wrong.

  • @Thisnameistaken11

Care to show me some sources for that tidbit? because all the history books and biographies of Burns (some of which written in the 18th and 19th centuries seem to contradict your statement.

  • @ratz30

I don't doubt that most books claim that. It IS a Burns song, insofar as he put pen to paper and published it. So the history books are correct in that sense. What many of them may have ommitted (due to ignorance or irrelevance) is that he didn't originally compose it. Same goes for Auld Lang Syne, by the way, just incase your books haven't told you that either.

As for sources, look up the song on "mysongbook dot de". There's a list of notes about the song with references.

  • @Thisnameistaken11 Auld Lang Syne exists in other forms in texts prior to the Burns version. As far as I know this song doesn't. Some claim it was pre-Burns or that it is possibly pre-Burns - but that is totally differnt from it actually being shown to be pre-Burns. And neither are there (again as far as I know) literary references to this song prior to Burns - and no letter from Burns saying it wasn't his. If Burns wrote the earliest version evidenced then why must we presume it wasn't his

  • @gaconnochie Clear as a babbling country burn there buddy. Succinctly and well put. Mair power tae yer elbae.

  • @Thisnameistaken11

This is just ignorance - Burns was an important collector, but more often than not he revised, improved or re-wrote. This version is well documented, and he wrote it in around Aug 1784. If you can't see the bard's hand in this, there's something wrong with your senses. If you think this is hack work, there's something wrong with your soul. For me, one of the greatest song-lyrics of all time: I've sung it for decades, and it moves me every time...

  • @tullochgorum

As I said, I've no doubt he tweaked the song when he committed it to paper. That doesn't mean he wrote or composed it. No doubt he had some talent for writing folk music, but the best of 'his' songs aren't wholly his own, and the less said about his poetry the better.

  • @Thisnameistaken11 Come up with this pompous post while you were working in the comic book store? Your opinion of Burns..or anyone else found worthy by history means shite to anyone but you. Your attempt to appear lofty and intellectual is pathetic.

  • @garymichael1950

Dude, chill with the personal comments; they're not becoming. Enjoy the song or don't enjoy it. I'm just stating the facts.

  • @Thisnameistaken11 My statment stands..you're a pompus ass.

  • @Thisnameistaken11 Then again...I have yet to NOT regret making a negative comment on YT. and you are correct..it isn't becoming in the least. So I guess that makes ME a pompus ass as well...Hey! Let's start a club!

  • ma chune end of

  • @heehawluck1 You tell me. I havn't read the comics for quite a few years so I can't tell ye if dictionary definitions are it them. Big and brave over the internet aren't ye? Ye know what? Dickheads like you simply aren't worth the bother. I simply passed my opinion on a video. YOU are the one that can't deal with it. Go find yerself a hobby or something instead of looking for arguments on youtube, fucking plastic hardman.

  • Michael Marra sings The Scottish Bard - brings a lump to my throat - Truly Beautiful.

  • I watched this broadcast and much as I love our Eddi Reader, Michael Marras' gravel voiced performance was very powerful and for me it was the best that night. I had his singing in my head for days afterwards. And yes if you get the chance go see him live.

  • Now THAT's how to sing Burns. A great performance.

  • Michael was a friend of mine from days of yore! It great to see that he is still up there with the best of them in Scottish music. Well done Mick!

  • Saw this last week on Celtic Connections and was completely blown away - the best performance of the night from someone I have incredibly never heard before!

  • duncane. If you get a chance go see Marra. He is so funny. Fantastic.

  • simply awesome micheal.

  • Its almost as if this song was meant for his voice.

    Excellent.

  • this song speaks to me on so many different levels. it makes me think bout everything that is important in life and makes me feel like such a fool for all the sins ive caused to both myself and other people. one of my favourite songs ever i think :)
