Do you think its likely there'll be a d700 upgrade soon? any word as im looking to buy very very soon but would go for the upgrade (wouldnt mind video as on d7000). thanks.
btw Nigel, i think i have the hots for you. yes i do. : )
Nice overview of the camera. Nice lens you have attached to it there as well. I just picked up the same setup and it is hefty, but very rugged. Gotta love the weatherproofing of the body and that 24-70.
Hi, I have been an amateur photographer for a number of years, starting off with 35mm, I have owned and used both the D100 and the D200, and I have just invested in the D700. I know that the full frame sensor equates to 35mm, so if I brought the Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM will I get any cropping or a reduction in the sensor? BTW your review persuaded me to by this camera.
c11umw #, think you are missing the point in that the D700 is full frame. Sticking a DX lens defeats the object as the lens will only cover a small percentage of the chip. The comparison would not make sense, £800 difference with normal lens on the D700 does : )
I just received this camera, it so far seems amazing. clearer viewfinder sweet. It does not feel as good in my hand as my Fuji Pro3 but it should work way better, so they say. I am glad I never switch my full frame lens from my film days, they worked great on DX Fuji Pro3 but now I can't wait! I have a job tomorrow and testing it there!
The question is rather how the D90 stacks up against the D700. If you need video and want a lighter camera then get the D90. Everything else is better on the D700. But its going to cost you a pretty penny.
They are in different leagues. One is pro one is not. Hard to compare cameras that were meant for different purpose. D90 is a great consumer level SLR but doesn't come close to the image quality and low light performance of the D700.
@Alexvideoclip If we do I don't see it performing as well in low light - in the same way the D3 does better in low light to the D3x. I really like the idea of fewer pixels on the FX sensor thus allowing greater light capture. Its one of the main draws to this camera. Otherwise why not get the 5Dmkii which has 21.1mp ? (I know, heresy, and Im a Nikon guy through and through, but pixels aren't everything).
Not that expensive if you take into account the features it boasts. The D3 still has a slight edge over the D700, but unless you're a professional there's almost no reason to not go for the D700 instead.
All in all it's just a matter of comparing price with function and personal needs and opinions.
Still is alot of damn money to spend on a piece of electronics.
Cool! A good camera indeed. Like seth says, the cameras are pretty even, but with slight differences which make the two appeal differently to different people
You would have been better with the Nikon D700, which is widely accepted to be better than the Mk2 (ergonomics, low noise & low light). You could have bought the 24-70mm f/2.8 instead of your 24-105 f.4..which loses some range but is far better..and nikon built (again considered superior to canon). I would like to challenge your claim that 'it is the best image quality in the world'..it's amazing, yes..but there's no need to brag..especially when in fact you are wrong.
Also.. you may have filming interest which is fair enough (but which you would have neglected to mention). As a Digital SLR CAMERA however the D700 is undeniably superior.
Ken Rockwell? Have you seen that guys work? He is beyond terrible and hardly one to be taken seriously in terms of camera reviews or tech opinions. Not saying the D700 isn't great though, it is.
that goes for entry level DSLRs too. I know people who only shoot in automatic mode. Which begs the question then why the hell do you have a DSLR. A lot of them don't even know what Fstop means and how it works in relation to exposure. I guess people enjoy pissing money away on to much kit.
I did a comparison using my FX 14-24 lense and D300. Although I found the full frame sensor made my lense a true wideangle, the pictures taken were much darker than the D300 and the image quality wasn't markably different (I use ISO100 99% of the time)
I'm re-tesing a different D700 tomorrow with my 14-24 and 70-200 FX lenses to see if the results are consistent. Just in case I had a 'Friday' camera. Initial thoughts are that it isn't worth 800GBP more. Hopefully tomorrow will prove me wrong
Why are you using ISO 100? Native base ISO on the D300/700 is 200. ISO 100 gives you less dynamic range and not optimal picture quality. It's funny that you spend so much money on bodies and glas and then go on to use an inferior ISO setting. And no, on base ISO the difference in picture quality of the D300 and the D700 won't be that great. But anything above ISO 800 really makes the D700 shine.

I`m looking to do landscape photography, but with print sizes up to A1. Would the
d700 be sharp enough for this, or would I be better going for a canon 5d2?
I am at a loss which one to go for, but want to make my decision soon, so any advice would be very gratefully received.

d700 if u wanna do landscape now doubt about that
go for it

Is not true D700 JPEG quality matches RAW format. JPEG from D700 is very good - while RAW matched with good software like C1 is just breathtaking

i just got the D90, do u know how the D700 stacks up against the D90 feature wise?
fallenembers08 2 years ago
No but there are web sites that compare what ever camera you want. Side by Side.
I went from film to Fuji Pro2 then Pro3 almost the Pro5 as it gives better skin tones but I really wanted a full sensor and high ISO.

The main advantage of the D700 is the FX format, the large bright viewfinder and of course the ISO capability.
I hope we will have a D700 with 18-24MP soon.

I resolved dilema.I bought EOS 5D MK II+BG6 grip+24-105 lens+3 batteries (not Canon)+Canon 50mm 1.8 lens+Flash.
It is the best Image quality on the world.
Clear crisp with huge amount of details.
O yes it was COST ,a lot.

The D700 is just as capable as a pro camera and it's smaller and lighter body makes it more attractive to some.

I use ISO 100, because I blow my pics up to huge sizes (canvasmyart) and to minimise noise I need a small ISO.
It's a moot point anyway as I have a D700 now as my primary.
