Well that isn't quite the same as pacifism. Philosophically Pacifism rejects the notion of a just war, and the use of violent coercion of any sort. That just doesn't seem realistic or sensible to me, sometimes we have a moral obligation to fight, of course that isn't the same as enjoying or glorifying conflict however. In short, war sucks but sometimes you have no moral alternative other than the destruction of something precious.

Actually it is pragmatics, i.e. the facts of the situation which aren't black and white. Philosophy is an intellectual framework where ideas retain their pure forms, consequently it is black and white. I find that most people do not act out of their stated philosophical preference in difficult situations, and psych testing shows much the same. You're right about trying to settle things with words, just a real pacifist doesn't fight ever, look at Gandhi's approach...

Truth in that. Of course genetics, accidental environmental factors, and emotional distress factor in too. As you say however, parenting is a big factor, and parents who are messed up all-too-often carry the damage on to the next generation. I like to think that when I help someone back to good mental health that I am helping countless others thereby. It helps me get through the tough days :D

Bad parenting or absent parents undermines people's identity and sense of security.
