  • wathch this on tv in cheltenhan, england 100mls west of london, it was hot, my parents in the garden. kept going out to tell my mum, hey mac has broken connors again, or, jimmy is still being destroyed..hard to believe mcenroe not win wimb again or even reach final.

  • @peterpeterxxo I know. I'm 46 and remember it well. BTW the Head Director ad is hootlarious.

  • mcenroe couldnt win the grand slam in 1984 he was chucked out of a tournament in sweden i think and had a two month ban which meant he coldnt play australian open dec 1984.

  • Even after winning McEnroe looks pissed off!

  • though mcenroe didn't win as much as sampras and federe, he is the most talented player ever, the way he played through 84 was beyond belief.

  • an artist in his studio....

  • your upload is the cleanest yet--not washed out

  • kinda like when nadal destroyed federer at french open

  • @TheSnowMan717 na cause that was 75% federer playing shit

it was more federer beating hewitt at us open 2004

mcenroe borg at us open 1980 was like federer nadal wimbledon 2008

that was the most similar match up, but you can't really compare cause of different eras technique is so different now

  • mcenroe looks weird yo

  • @Pete20212 No he doesn't yo.

  • Mcenroe was so dominant that year. Unbelieveable. He made Jimmy look like a rookie there.

  • Descibed as the greatest ever display at wimbledoen by j.p. mcEnroe.and id have to agree, thumbs up guys

  • isnt connors using a wooden racket here and mcenroe a graphite one?i cant tell the picture is bad.

  • @jayfey77 Connors is using the Wilson T2000, which is made of steel.

  • exactly 10 years before Connors was part of another one-sider,except he was on the winning end.

  • Mac distrusse letteralmente Connors.

  • It's all about mindset. The jinx was out after his fall in '82, so now it was just his comeback.

  • I think Big Mac was just unplayable that day! No player could have bea ten him. He never served and vollyed so well. Anything he attempted, he suceeded doing it. And unfornutately, "Jimbo" was very much under his usual level. His return of serve, which had made marvels againt Lendl in semi-final, was simply out of order.. Therefore, Connors had no options but to undergo McEnroe's humilating domination.

  • Comment removed

  • What a drubbing. Connors must have felt humiliated.

  • what changed so much from 82 when connors won against mac? Just a case of mac in his absolute prime and jimmy started started declining just a little?

  • Well, Jimmy gave Mac a five-set thriller at the US Open semis. The difference was on this day nobody could beat Mac. Connors hit some good shots, but McEnroe was just that much better that day.

  • @jmlbloom. Ivan Lendl dominated him in the semi's but Jimmy won the big points and the match. By the time he got to Mac, he was done and Mac was just too good.

  • Thanks for leaving the ads afterwards. I had forgotten about those Head sneakers that appeared in the racquet ad. They were all the rage back at my junior high in '84.

  • I think this was the best mcenroe ever played

  • .........oh yeah, and 11 aces and NO double faults. As Dick Enberg would say, "Oh my!"

  • 75% first serve percentage, 35 winners, and TWO unforced errors (would be interesting to compare with Edberg's demolition of Courier in the '91 US Open final) - in a final on tennis' greatest stage against one of the all-time greats, not to mention one of the greatest returners of serve. Has either Federer or Sampras packed such concentrated brilliance in one performance as McEnroe did here?! Too bad McEnroe blew the French in '84 because his brilliance was worthy of winning the Grand Slam.

  • Food for thought: Had Mac won that French, would he had gone to Australia (which was held in December back in those days) and tried for the Slam? The Masters in NYC was seen as more prestigious back then. Plus, it's well known that Mac did not like those old Kooyong grass courts. Would have been interesting, to say the least.

  • @bigandtallreturn if he had won australia i think he defenitly would have played kooyong because what could be more presigious then winning the slam

  • @bigandtallreturn Had he not choked to Lendl in the French he would have gone to Australia to match up what his idle, Rod Laver [the only man to complete the Grand Slam of Tennis twice] accomplished twice.

  • @bigandtallreturn why didnt mcenroe like aust open grass, was it slower than wimbledon was then, he didint play aust open until 1983 or something.

  • @peterpeterxxo It wasn't the grass so much as the courts. Kooyong's courts were uneven, and Mac said in his autobiography that on one side of the center court, you felt like you were running uphill. Also, the grass wasn't as well-maintained as Wimbledon's courts are. Add that plus the fact that Australia was played around Christmas back in those days. Even when they moved to Melbourne Park, Mac only played twice there, in 1990 and 1992.

  • @bigandtallreturn ok thanks..uneven and sloping courts ? sounds a fiasco, that and poor prize money and it was held over xmas why top players opted out , shame about mac if hed really put his mind to it and played every year at his peak late 78- late 85 he bound to have won aust open. and he was banned from it in 84 i saw he didnt play was it cause of stockholm ban ?.

  • soooo gifted at the net

  • The most natural volley ever.....my opinion. This match was proof of his real talent. If he had better control of his temper I believe he could have dominated Wimbledon for years!

  • very true--

i've never seen a copy of this match that didn't look

washed out. i don't think one exists.

  • That court surface has always been so hard to see the ball on anyways (watching it on TV). These old matches were fantastic to watch. I graduated from high school in '84 and played first singles for my school. Loved watching Mac, Connors, Lendl and the rest back then! Wish I had all of these videos!!
