is she a red iguana? cuz mines is a red iguana and it looks just like that but ppl tell me hes a green iguana cuz he is mostly green so i was just wondering what urs was?
@reptiles4life100 hey there, i think she is a green iguana, but she has a lot of orange on her. she may have some red iguana in her somewhere along the lines, but she is classified a green iguana. some can have orange on them, esp males in breeding season and 'alpha' females. here are some pix of my other iguana who is a red iguana: my.opera.com/mountainlion_wales/blog/
my iguana bitch slap my cuzn in the face that shit was funny cuz i told him smell her and he got clos 2 her tail and she slap him in the face that shit was funny 2 me but not 2 him lol
yes. she's a rescue - either she was born like that or she didn't get enough calcium when she was younger and has mbd - don't know which for sure. her spine is also not as straight as it should be, and some of her toes are crooked, but other than that she's a lovely girl now she's getting the right diet, supplements and lighting :)
mbd is metabolic bone disease. it means the iguana doesn't get enough calcium - usually due to having no UVB light, which they need to make the calcium available to them. the disease makes the ig's bones grow curved / deformed and weak, and can break more easily. the growth of the ig can also be stunted and not grow to its full adult size. if it is very bad and not treated, the iguana can die from it :(
that's her natural colour - when green iguanas get older, they go more dark colours, like dark brown. they also have black or dark brown stripes on their sides and stripes on tail. all iguanas have slightly different colour patterns and variations in colour, and is also different depending on if they are hot or cold, frightened or relaxed :)
Yeah, we thought that when we 1st got her - thinking she might be a young male going into breeding season. But nope, that's her natural colour - she goes orange when she gets hot or scared too. She's an alpha female I guess! She acts like a male and head bobs and displays when she feels like it, esp when she sees herself in a reflection!
aww, that's a shame :( i don't like pet stores that don't take responsibility for the animals they sell. they don't look like they are helpful at all.
this is jus a crazy idea but u cud do a massive road trip to S. America to return him to his wild ig friends - they are endangered ther coz ppl keep taking thm 4 pet stores. its a shame :( make a movie about it, itd be so cool with a happy ending :) jus make sure u release him in the right place as introducing a non-native animal is illegal!
normally i'd agree with that, but reptiles have not been bred for thousands of yrs by ppl to breed out their 'wild' traits like dogs and cats, so reptiles still have their wild instincts. igs being aggressive and ppl wanting to move them on r unfortunately a sign tht ppl don't realise this when they buy an essentially wild animal from a pet store (no offence to psychosocia82 or anyone else!) the store should tell ppl this or not sell them at all.
i agree with you on the last part. but if an animal gets used to being fed all the time they can forget how to hunt. but you are right about them not being domesticated like cats and dogs, but that doesnt mean they dont get too used to the cushy life. but as i said, on that last part i agree with you %100
that's very true 4 large carnivores that have been raised in captivity as they need to be taught to hunt. reptiles don't have parental input on their young to teach hunting skills, they are born with the instinct - esp herbivores like iggys, they just sit on their food and munch! (mine was a rescue - she had been dumped in a city & survived for 2 wks before we rescued her, and that wasn't even her native environment with correct food! pretty amazing :)
It's inbuilt! Lots of the time adults are solitaty, apart from when mating or in unnatural conditions where ppl (food!) attract them. The youngsters stay in a group 4 safety&may disperse later. They do learn lots by observing though ur rite and their language reflects tht. But they dont need 2 c another ig eating 2 no how 2 eat, and dont need to see another ig run away from a predator 2 learn tht either, it's just instinctive. If u dont tame ur ig, it'll go back to being wild and run frm u again
wish i could help u out there but i'm in the UK :(
maybe ask at a local pet store or zoo if they have room for him? doubt they will buy him off u tho. most igs like that over here go to rescue centres etc.
hehe, thanks. yeah, they need quite a bit of time, esp if u want them to become tamer. maybe u will be able to get one if u have more time at some stage! :)
hehe, she does! i love watching her do that. maybe u male is confident enough to not get scared coz he knows hes big and doesnt have to run! lol. it is cool to see tho. its also cool to see them swim in the bath :)
dont worry! your english is fine :) she has just laid eggs for the 2nd year :D and all is well. i have a bin on its side with a mixture of soil/sandy soil/water for her to dig in. she digs a few holes, i fill them in, then eventually she will lay them in there :)
yes, she normally looks more like she does in the last pic! sorry, i did say this in an earlier post but its gone off the screen...she was just about to lay eggs and had stopped eating for abt 2 wks. she was also a rescue, i think it was the 1st time she'd laid as well. she put her weight back on plus some more once she'd laid :)
yeah, she's only like that if you come up the stairs or towards her a bit fast. if u sit down next to her she's ok, and will then climb on u :) thanx tho. she was also gravid at the time and didn't want any handling! usually she's ok.
yeah, you can never tell which ones will become aggressive. you have to do lots of reading to understand them properly, and if you are very dedicated, can take on any iguana, even if it becomes aggressive, and learn to deal with it safely and effectively. these are still animals with wild instincts, but if owners look at them as this and not as 'pets' and can care for them and appreciate them for what they are, then all is good :)
haha, oh no! ...sometimes male iguanas like to chase female humans because they want them as their mate - they get confused sometimes!! maybe this is why he chased your mum. when he chased you, it could be him trying to defend his territory!
hey cool iguana im want to get an iguana but i dont know i dont have a big enough cage and i dont really know how to build one or how much everything costs in all they have baby green iguanas at my pet store for $29.99 which is cheap but what about the cage how much does that cost?
hi, thanks :) yeah, the iguana is generally cheap... the cage, as with most animals, is what's expensive!! ...plus any vet's bills u may meet down the line. this thing wont let me paste a web address annoyingly, but if u go to google and then type in 'melissa kaplan', the website comes up with a load of really good info on most reptiles, including lots on iguana housing. for that, go to 'captivity issues' in the list on left, then 'enclosure size, design and planning' on the right. good luck!
yeah, she always will try and get away first, aggression is a last defence when she has no choice, or feels like she cannot escape from whatever is scaring her.
don't worry, this vid was about a yr ago - she was a rescue and she rly looked a lot worse than this when i got her! she was also about to lay eggs here and had stopped eating... she normally looks like she does in the last still pic of her on here. she also has a deformed jaw, probably coz she didn't get enough calcium when she was younger.
iguana hormones!! ...she was making eggs at the time. her instinct tells her that the possibility of being 'grabbed' may damage her eggs inside - in the wild possibly another male iguana would try to mate with her - and he might not be very gentle about it. one, he would be too late to father any babies, so she wouldn't be interested in him at that time anyway.... two, he may hurt her and/or her developing eggs if he attacks. this extends to not wanting any attention, including from humans!!
nice i do love your iguana. btw dont tick one off because they can lash their tail like a whip and i have seen it where it can cut through skin. also its extremely painful if u get hit.

well... not anymore... she was a rescue, found abandoned in someone's garden... in the vid she's just about to lay eggs, and coz of that, she had stopped eating 2 wks before she laid. she normally looks like she does in the last (still) pic on the vid.
Wow that's a very pretty one. I just bought one two days ago and currently working on her cage setup. She is just a baby looks similar to that one with brown down the spine. But it don't go as far down her ribs( I just assume mine is a her) Her name is jade and I <3 her.
In the movie she is gravid, she had starved herself due to the eggs taking up all her internal space. So yeah, she isn't looking her best :( She has a line down her body meaning she is a bit dehydrated :( I had to mash fruit and veggies with water to get some fluids into her. Luckily soon after that she laid and now is returning to her full health. Plus she was a rescue...
