@roxtar225 You're doing it wrong, that much is clear... if you can explain exactly what you're doing and what's happening then I can probably help you. My guess is that you're just trying to double click on an executable... by default the only program that's bound to a Windows executable is the virus scanner, you need to right click and select "Run with windows program loader". You could change the properties of an exe to open with Wine by default, but I find it safer to leave it as it is.
cool if i go to linux will this let me install ext sounds card i have and use it case i record and write my own music and i just hate the way they are going with new windows cans even get to the windows mixer any more like on xp to set it up for music studio
@hto1971 That depends, an external sound card is something which might require a driver, wine is only for running software (not drivers, since they have a tighter bond to the OS). However, what type of external soundcard are you thinking of? I run a number of different external (USB) audio devices, you won't need to worry about a driver unless it's more than 2 channels.
damm....this is going to be impossible....i downloaded ubuntu onto my vista laptop, and i want to run my wireless internet but since the application is compatible to windows and mac, i can't download wine...im stuck :(
@TheGarcia350 I think you may have mis-understood the situation quite deeply... or you are using a very unusual internet connection.
Ubuntu is shipped with drivers for virtually every wired ethernet card, most wifi adapters, particularly the built in ones used in laptops... and a goodly number of USB 3g Dongles.... as well as all of the software you need to browse the web, read your email, and most of the things you could want to do on the Internet. Wine is for running Apps, not drivers.
@TheGarcia350 Click on the network icon in the bar at the top right, and unless you have a very unusual wifi adapter, you will find that you have the option to connect to your WiFi network...
@lewiar tried that already. like i said, in order to have internet, i need wine, but i have no wa to connect because the internet i have is Wireless usb modem. very ironic situation.
@TheGarcia350 I'm still afriad you are mis-understanding... Wine is for running "applications" it will not allow you to run Windows based drivers in almost any situation... what you need is to find the appropriate method/driver for Ubuntu... Is your device a USB Wireless (WiFi) dongle... or a USB Mobile Broadband (3g) Dongle?... tell me, or indeed google what the device is or if you can't find out, open a terminal and type "lsusb" and send me the output....
@TheGarcia350 Believing that Windows based driver software is appropriate for Linux is probably one of the most common ways to fail at getting hardware support working on Linux, most people don't have any problems with basic network devices... although 3g can be a bit hit and miss. There is a wrapper that can sometimes allow you to run Windows "WiFi" drivers, but not in the way you imagine.... If you're using 3g, you need to go to the network icon, click edit connections, and add a provider.
@hto1971 i know vista is a windows pc O_o. i believe you misunderstood whatever i said on my previous comments. either ways, i switched to mac, screw linux and windows lol.
@hto1971 im poor too. i got mine from a pawn shop for less than 200 bucks, all i had to do was return the pc to factory settings, meaning all the junk erased. so yea, just a little look around and bargain.
@dexsmasher Is that a statement or a question?... but that is just Wine yea... it wouldn't of made for such a short / to the point video... but you can run a lot of DX9 games just like that too.
Well, Firefox is a "convenient" app the video would be very long if I installed "World of Warcraft" while you watched.
I don't explain how to install Wine, but the "Add/Remove Software or Software Center" is on the top level of the application menu, it's hard to miss. It is a basic feature of Ubuntu.
I assume that someone trying to install a windows app on Ubuntu would know how to install it on Windows.,, and I did show how to "run" the installer using the file manager on Ubuntu...
@fastwayroknrolla I know your comment is from a long time ago, but I wanted to add this comment to the video... I just installed the Windows version of Firefox on my Sisters Ubuntu computer because she required a plugin which is only available for Windows (being ActiveX) for viewing/printing musical score... everything has a purpose, and this demo might seem pointless, but apparently it's not since I just needed to do it for a real use case!

your demo is kinda pointless, since , as you mentioned, firefox already comes with Ubuntu as a default browser.
and you don't even explain how to use wine to install a windows app.
just my two cents.
