I would say that this is funny precisely because it is random: there is nothing special about a laundry basket - though the panicked screaming may be connected with the way he holds the basket up to the camera, so it looks like a cage. As for the rug, maybe he only thought of it after! Anyway, that "flowered rug" is written on a blank screen does permit a little variation and also provides a nice conclusion, taking us away from the scene, like the words "The End."

I also think the funniest thing about this is that it's a satirical critique of pop culture. Tom uses the same format as most pop/rap songs, his minimalist approach has single meaningless words (unlike Timberlake or other pop singers who assemble 10-20 meaningless words when building their verses). Then he has "buildup", "refrain", "rap cameo", "climax", "detente", and "resolution" etc. And if you think about it this song has about as much meaning and value as most pop music.
