The samoan tattooist rule is "before you give the pain out to others (give a tattoo), you have to learn to take it, so essentially you gotta get a tatau before you can give one out. That way, you know how much pain the person is gng through in certain parts of the body, and can determine when to take breaks when to hit soft.

how sad to read all these angry comments after watching a beautiful video about a deeply spiritual custom. I have visited Samoa on holiday many times and have met more than two whites with the pea thats for sure. Sad but true that tatooists will do a pea for money not service. It is also interesting that racism is usually an ignorant attitude, and all the comments posted that expressed racism were written in broken english, so that says it all. so sad.

I don't consider myself a purist but thenI would not acuse someoen of being a low-brow for lack of their grasp of english. Remember English is not a first language for many of us. The upshot of the latter was the tatau being stretched every which way as the boy grew into a man. Now I see that tufuga are springin up in NEw Zealand who are noy instructed ina traditional sense and this is to mymind quite appalling and probably worse than tufuga commercialisng it. IMHO

I agree with you wholeheartedly, and forgive my comments regarding broken english, i was referring to the slang terms so commonly used amongst islanders who have been brought up outside of the islands. I know many of them and am friends with many of them, but sadly their grasp of english in not much better than their grasp of Samoan, which kind of leaves them in a nowhere place as far as culture goes, or perhaps a sub culture. Not that it is a huge issue, merely an observation. :)

nope. the samoan tatau is only for samoans. The high chief, his sons and daughters. also the matais. Only the way you would probably get at samoan tatau is through dedication and service to the chiefs, and well you have to have a title. There is only one man and female that are not samoan who have been honored with the tatau and malu.

it's understandable that you feel that way if you grew up in area filled with racism but it's important to remember that not all whites are racist.
