If you are talking about the movie - they always are.
Firefighting 101 you always hold up your bunker gear coat arm with fire glove close to the door - if it is hot you will feel it. In backdraft the heat stays in the room or structure the exterior doors, windows, etc will always be hot.
and flashover is when all the fuels (the products that are "burning") and contents of the room (which includes gases and carbon particles) reach auto-ignition point, which is the point at which a fuel can chemically sustain its own combustion. this occurs between 900-1200 degrees farenheit. combustion is an exothermic reaction, and the fact that the whole fire load in the room is combusting at once, it gives off a great amount of energy resulting in a violent explosion of fire
I really agree with others here. Is there any way we could get this in the "What Firefighters should NOT do" file. There are flashover and backdraft signs everywhere that no one is paying attention too. Hard for me to believe these are really professional firefighters. At about the 2 min mark watch the two guys at the window. At least they recognized the backdraft before it happened and knew to get out of the way.
@JDMC42 hha I am not even a firefighter and I would have not smashed the door open -- instead I might have sprayed water into the cracks at least... then again could the resulting steam create pressure and blow the door open...
no real fire fighter would go in with his bunker coat open no scba and just now putting his gloves on while going into a damn structure fire you would be crispy inside and out
We had a third floor apartment fire and everyone wore full turnout gear, coats buckled, team of three, small handline, but we didn't enter before checking the door with the back of a bare hand. After that, we attached a bayonet nozzle and rammed it through the door and did not force entry until the door had cooled. I hate this scene. In fact, this is one of worst movies about firefighting made. No need to list all the mistakes made in this stupid scene.

@se5tachi Hit the ceiling with a quick burst of water to cool things down, but not so much that you bring the superheated gases and steam from the ceiling down on top of you
Why was that first fire department using a crows nest while fighting fire in the first floor?????! Thats gotta be the stupidest tactical mistake I've seen.
@braceyoself777 dont know, i think the main problem was the place where they parked their turntable ladder, cause they wanted to get him out of the smoke and let him down, but he was still in the danger area.
Another mistake was that he didnt used breathing protection in the crows nest.

@oohmydearcarolline So what would happen in an accelerant fire situation being suppressed with CO2 as with certified chemical storage depots? The CO2 pressure is high on the surface but vapors are sustaining combustion in higher ground. Would a backdraft still be probable after the fire was out and CO2 is exhausted but the temperatures are still high enough to cook off the vapors?
@oohmydearcarolline Well said, flashover is similar. Where a fire within a building or compartment is burning, the burnt gasses rise to the roof. These gasses are still combustible, and after a certain period of time, these gasses will get hot enough, and at the correct mixture to ignite. where the fire will then consume all the smoke at the roof and eat downward into the room.
I as a firefighter have to witness this kind of stuff all the time. Im only 18 and i know exactly how these people feel. In training i was a short of kind of back draft. It wasnt real fire or smoke but it gave me a sense of what can happen and what kind of measures you have to take in order for this to really happen.
another point I will bring up is that Backdrafts rarely have much smoke [since the room they come from is largely air-tight]. Warning signs of a Backdraft are as follows: Wispy-smoke coming from a closed door; said door is moving back and forth as if 'breathing' [the smoke usually goes in and out and can be missed if you're not paying attention]; Said door is hot to the touch; Windows to the room are black, and have wispy smoke coming from them. If you see these signs, DO NOT OPEN THE ROOM
Although I've been out for a while, I can point out several things, and probably bring up some interesting points. One: Backdrafts only happen when the room they originate from is almost completely out of O2, but the heat is still allowing for fire, when O2 is reintroduced to the fire-room, the result is a massive explosion that can seriously injure/kill anyone in it's path. A Flashover on the other hand, occurs when EVERY object in the fire-room has reached it's flash-point. stay alert, be safe
I'm a full-time Firefighter in Canada. The first 30 seconds is from the 1991 movie "Backdraft". The rest of the video is real footage. I've seen all of these clips in training videos.
Flashovers happen more frequently than Backdrafts, but they can/do kill or badly burn Firefighters all over the world every year.
The bunker gear FF's wear is not flame-proof and a flashover is VERY BAD NEWS.
actually this film is pretty realistic flashovers and backdrafts can happen like that, sure there is a great deal of hollywood in the first clip but explosions like that can happen
Backdraft - Fire starts in a closed environment with little air flow into room, high temp smoke and combustible particles in the air which cannot burn due to no oxygen, introducing the oxygen into the room allows these particles to burn, flames will follow oxygen route at 10 metres per second.
Flashover - Fire in the room heats up other materials in room to their sponteous ignition temp and whoosh the fire seems to spread from one side of the room to another as the materials ignite.
RESCUE ME; a bit of a nutty show, but they do have some good interior firefighting scenes that portray, to a pretty good degree, what it's like in a fire. Most fires, however, produce almost zero visibility and that's what makes firefighting a very dangerous occupation.
You can't see what you're up against until it's too late.
As a Volunteer Fireman, I love watching these videos. It gives civilians an idea of how dangerous the job is, even if you're just running a support line outside the building! Great video!

I as a firefighter have to witness this kind of stuff all the time. Im only 18 and i know exactly how these people feel. In training i was a short of kind of back draft. It wasnt real fire or smoke but it gave me a sense of what can happen and what kind of measures you have to take in order for this to really happen.

The guy opening the door is ,I think, the only footage from the movie Backdraft.
All the other backdrafts are from real life.

the guy at :58 should be wearing a SCBA, he is way too close to the fire to not be wearing one.

another point I will bring up is that Backdrafts rarely have much smoke [since the room they come from is largely air-tight].

Damn techno version ruined POTC!

actually this film is pretty realistic flashovers and backdrafts can happen like that, sure there is a great deal of hollywood in the first clip but explosions like that can happen

Backdraft - Fire starts in a closed environment with little air flow into room, high temp smoke and combustible particles in the air which cannot burn due to no oxygen, introducing the oxygen into the room allows these particles to burn, flames will follow oxygen route at 10 metres per second.
Flashover - Fire in the room heats up other materials in room to their sponteous ignition temp and whoosh the fire seems to spread from one side of the room to another as the materials ignite.

name me one! Fire-fighting movie/series that is halfway realistic ;)
Sebb81 2 years ago
RESCUE ME; a bit of a nutty show, but they do have some good interior firefighting scenes that portray, to a pretty good degree, what it's like in a fire. Most fires, however, produce almost zero visibility and that's what makes firefighting a very dangerous occupation.
You can't see what you're up against until it's too late.

As I'm from Germany, i don't know Rescue me, but I will change that :)
I'm a firefighter, too, and I keep going mad when the guys take off their masks in burning obejects to talk to victims and all the other crazy stuff.
