Hmmm.... So, a claw cannot be used for slicing if it has a "rounded" shape with a sharp tip and not a thin shape with a sharp edge?
OK, what is the shape of the claws of big cats today? It is rather rounded with a very sharp tip, isn't it? And they do slice pretty well, or do I miss something?
@kickniko youre somewhat correct but missing some information.... big cats claws are most definitely not the size that the velociraptors was meaning it didnt puncture as deep therefore requiring less force to complete a "slash" secondly; in one of the previous parts it stated that the velociraptor had about the same force as a human arm and most big cats today have more force than a human. with those to factors I hope you
@kickniko Nope. Cat claws are used for binding a cat to the prey. It's the teeth that do the killing. They might be able to scratch, but they can't disembowel. They're used for latching on while the cat's bite delivers the kill
I thought that the way they concluded that velociraptor pack-hunted was rather flawed, the only crocodile that actually cooperates in a group is the nile crocodile, and the harris hawk is pretty much the only modern bird that utilizes pack hunting. both would have evolved such behaviors because their niches demanded that they do so, not because it's genetic. There is still no evidence that velociraptor hunted in packs. It COULD have done it, but we have no way of saying for certain that it did.
highly speculative, saying the fossil find was Proto and V. locked in combat. The odds of them both dying and being buried instantly while in combat are too fantastic to consider. More likely both animals were buried in sandstorm or by a sand dune and were simply jumbled together in what looked like a combative pose.
The strategy of the throat stab with the claw is unlikely. Requires too much precision and puts you too close to prey's mouth where one bite could mean a broken arm or leg.
@MsDjessa I checked wikipedia, cording to it the scientific name of harris´s hawk is Parabuteo unicinctus, also cording to many other more specialized sites.
I think the sandstorm choking theory about how they were fossilized like that is very unlikely. If they'd been choking to death, they probably wouldn't have been in that position. :l
@P0int13lank138 True. It would have had to have been a nearly instant death. Sand storm? Probably not. Depending on the environment, possibly being crushed by an "avalanche" (if you will) of sand. We may never know.
Look at 1:43 - Scutosaurus used to be mounted right behind Giraffatitan in Berlin's Natural History Museum?!?!?!? WEIRD. I though that was strictly a dinosaur hall, not a "dinosaur and permian reptile hall".
God struck them both down and covered their forms, thus preserving them for all time.

You'll never know why they died, and the dinosaurs will never tell you because... The first rule in Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club.

Give someone a knife, and they can be scary. Give someone a knife that truly knows how to use it, then you have a truly terrifying killer.

that's a stupid question! he was a small predator hunting small pray.
after all the Protoceratops is also small, about the same size of a Velociraptor.

Protoceratops: I'll be your lunch over my cold, dead body!
Velociraptor: Lol, I can go with that!
*Fight ensues*

I named my Cockatiel Raptor because I love Jurassic Park/Dinosaurs and he reminds me of a Raptor/Chocobo cross-breed lol

If someone wanted to see hawks behaving like velociraptor go down the southern states of the US and watch a species of hawks hunt swamp rabbits.

@BrontoSmilodon1 Actually, Dinosaur Planet suggested that they were burried by a collapsing sand dune.
