The deleted scene for this particular moment is very disturbing. Poor guy... It would have been cool if they kept that scene in, but then again, they most likely wouldn't have gotten the PG rating they were aiming for.
I agree with riazomonero; I feel that where Brody looks out to sea and the music comes in it is a very stirring moment in the film. The deep resonating bass is almost like the ocean is calling Brody out there to come and get the shark. Very clever piece of music from John Williams - the man is a genious!
@nicedog1 I Totally agree with you. That is how i always saw the music in this scene. For me its the french horn (?) at 2:37. Almost feeling like a piper on the hill calling to Brody. And finally his resolve that he finally knows what he has to do.
@roquefortfiles Another Spielburg / Williams piece of genious is at the begining of Saving Private Ryan when old Mr Ryan is weeping at the grave and the camera zooms into his eyes and you hear that same sea evoking music like in Jaws just before we see Omaha Beach.
is it true in the book or there is a deleted scence the poor man actually sacraficed him self to save michael? the shark was goin straight for michael so he swam right in front of it
Yes, its talked about and shown on the special edition DVD.
The man is actually holding Michael in his arms while the shark is dragging him to his death, and just before he's devoured, he tosses michael aside, out of harms way.
Spielberg decided to cut it because it was too graphic, and they felt it was in "poor taste".
They should have left that deleted scene in the film because it showed that the estuary victim was at least in his dying moments a hero for saving Mike. Otherwise he's just a random redshirt.

@nicedog1 That part always ALWAYS gives me chills man. It is a defining moment in cinema where the music and picture come together perfectly.

This scene is great because it's the first time we really see the shark fully (when it drags the guy under just before the severed leg scene).

@yulethomson kinda. He is in the sharks mouth already and he pushes Michael out of the way. The deleted scene exists on the DVD i think.

Its so good when Brody looks out towards the sea and the music in the background almost just suggests hes realizing he has to go and kill it.

When i first saw Jaws i thought the leg the shark cut off the guy was absolutely disgusting!

To me this is one of the best scenes in the movie, this is the scene where we(The Audience)gets to see the shark for the first time.
Ellen Brody:"Michael's in the pond."
*Jaws theme plays*
[Brody starts running after realizing the shark is headed towards where his son is]
[Shark closes in on its next victim]
[Brody races to get to his son in time]
*Jaws music still plays*
[Dude gets eaten, the shark swims right past Michael] Awesome scene :)
